I live and work in China and, in addition to my regular job, help a fierociously intelligent nineteen-year-old girl with her English twice a week. I don't so much teach her as talk to her and attempt to develop her debating skills. Though not perfect, her English is very good so discussion is often deep with a tendency to take unpredictable twists and turns. We've taken to reading thoughtful articles together and then discussing the main points in addition to noting down any unfamiliar vocabulary. I'd be grateful if Hivemind could suggest some provocative, not overly academic articles that could serve this purpose. I'm running out of ideas.

I'll be travelling to Hangzhou, China and the region around it in a few weeks. There are six of us, and we're thinking of hiring a car/minibus and driver to transport us for the longer journeys, for example from Hangzhou to some of the nearby mountains. Is it possible for us to make arrangements with some kind of transport company beforehand, or should we just do it when we get there?

I purchased a few pieces of vintage reataurantware that came from a restaurant called, "The Dwarf," The body of the the vitreous china is white and the rim is decorated with a green airbrished, stenciled oak leaf design. Inside the rim of the plate, cup and on the saucer are a dwarf wearing what looks to be an acorn hat. He's facing right and is dressed in maroon and green. Beneath him are the words, "The Dwarf." There is some speculation that The Dwarf was the original Chik-Fil-A. May not be the case. Any information about the restaurant will be much appreciated!

I live in Australia, and have noticed lot of the students I study with who are from somewhere in East Asia will adopt a Western name while they're over here, presumably to make things easier for thick-tongued Anglos. I'm curious about how these names are selected.

Let's say, theoretically, I am trying to provide a large quantity of children's books to a school in rural China.
Is there a reputable retailer / way of purchasing a large quantity of cheap/used children's books, written in the English language, within mainland China? Or would it be more feasible/cheaper to deliver such books over from another country? In the "other country" scenario, we can can think about either (1) where the books themselves have been donated, and so we are primarily worried about shipping, or (2) where we still have to purchase the books.

Is there a good overview or history of China to read? Or a few books together to read on the various eras of Chinese history? It's one of the areas of the world that I know surprisingly little about but really should. Ideally, I would love to find some books that are available for Kindle.
This prior AskMefi question targeted
Early Chinese History. I'd also like some suggestions on 19th and 20th century Chinese history and the Communist revolution, in particular, too.
