China is scaring me. Specifically, the possibility that they'll make a play for Taiwan, the US will come to Taiwan's defense, and World War III (IV? V?) will break out. Are there good reasons this is unlikely?

Much to my surprise, I have been given a visa to visit ol' zhongguo (china) for a few months (i'll be doing research on minorities).
I would like to be able to surf the net anonymously but I'm a bit of a nOOb when it comes to proxy servers and what not. I remember seeing a similar question on slashdot but answers said things like "Just ssh into ..." I know what ssh is, etc. but i'm not sure how to use a proxy through ssh. can anyone give me some basic instructions?
I would appreciate help. Comments like "Don't go to China if you don't want to obey their rules!!!" or whatever are less appreciated.
Thanks!

I've got some Chinese paintings from my late grandfather, and I'm having trouble finding more information about them.
Here's what he had to say about them (image, transcript inside) and
here's a scan I made of one of them (image). I don't know enough about this subject to make educated guesses, and the information from my grandfather is either inaccurate or just a dead-end. So basically, I'd like to know anything that you know about this. I'd be happy to scan more of the prints as well if someone needs additional information.

I have to give a short presentation today in my Chinese Lit. class on the cultural revolution (i.e. approx. '66-'69, the upsurge by students and workers against the Chinese Communist Party, initiated by Mao) and, aside from such sources as Wikipedia, etc, was wondering if anyone had any interesting points to make about it, or revealing links, sources, etc, that would aid me in my presentation. My teacher lived in China around this time, so anything from a unique perspective would be appreciated by both her and I. Thanks!

OnlinePharmacyFilter: I am interested in buying a certain pharmaceutical for my own off-label use (which is known to be safe and effective). I would rather not deal with a doctor to obtain a prescription -- I don't at the moment have a primary care provider I trust -- and this drug appears to be readily available at any number of Web pharmacies, with few questions asked. Does anyone have experience with online drug sellers? Are these vendors reliable at all? I am skeptical, of course, and do wonder whether I'll end up with a bottle of sugar pills, or worse. (I saw a recent news report, on 60 Minutes, I think, about the global market in fake products, including brand name drugs, in which a fugazy Viagra pill made in China was shown to be indistinguishable from the real thing.) (On the other hand, CVS-bought, doctor-prescribed brand name drugs are not necessarily to be trusted either. And Vioxx is, I'm sure, just the tip of that industry iceberg. Nonetheless...) Am I crazy to buy drugs on the Web?
(Heck, it sue has been a long time since High School, when it never would have occurred to me to ask what was in the drugs I was taking, where they were from, or if they were "safe" or "pure"...)

I'm looking for information about importing products to the US from China. Specifically, I'm trying to turn
this concept into a reality. I have sussed out local business licensing requirements , have legal representation, and have found a manufacturing company who can provide the product. Specifically, I'm interested in either (a) finding a domestic manufacturer or (b) getting advice on the best way to navigate US import rules & regulations and/or identify an import agent I can trust.

My husband had had some Villeroy and Boch Foxwood Tales china that he bought for his ex-wife (although she never liked it). I never liked having it because 1. it's a constant reminder of the ex, and 2. even if it weren't, it's just really not my style anyway (both this particular china and the idea of china in general). He's decided he wants to get rid of it, and we are thinking we'll sell it on Ebay. But we've never sold before, do people have some tips for us? Is there a better way to sell it than Ebay?
