Hey Mefis! I am asking this question on behalf of my brother-in-law who recently got laid off. Does anyone here have advice to give to a guy with a degree in Chinese and minor in business who would like to work in manufacturing/ sourcing for a US company either in the US or China?

Just picked up some cool paper cuts. And was wondering if metafilter can help me translate them. I believe they are Chinese but honestly I am not sure. Two images are below:

Let me know if you have any trouble with the images. And thanks again Metafilter!

How many hours of labor do you estimate it takes to produce a high-quality Chinese
cloisonne vase, 12 inches tall? A couple of these vases are owned by the school that I teach at, and I would love to be able to tell my students a ballpark figure of how much effort goes into producing these luxury goods--from making the metal base, to adding wire lines, to filling it with enamel, to firing, to final polishing. Our vases are polished to a high gloss, and they have an intricate geometric pattern in the background. There is no area in the background with a gap of more than 2 mm. The foreground consists of well-rendered flowers and foliage. Any thoughts about such objects would be most appreciated.

I'd like to re-read the Chinese classical novel
Dream of the Red Chamber (
The Story of the Stone), but I'd like to know more about the world it's set in first. What are some recommendations for books about daily life and clothing during the Qing dynasty, particularly during the 1700s?

A friend has just moved from mainland China to Vancouver, BC. Her English is pretty good, but not perfect (she speaks Mandarin). Her only work experience is in teaching.
I'm at the other end of the country, in Ontario, and want to do what I can to help her integrate and find work, but am hindered by my location and complete lack of immigration experience/knowledge. What helpful advice, tips, and resources can you share with her?

These plates with golden inscriptions (
1 2 3 4) were bought in China in the 1950s or 60s. They're 13.4 cm tall, 9.5 cm wide and about 4 mm thick, two-sided; I can't tell which ones are page 3 and 4. They're illuminated from behind in these photos so you can read them more easily. What are they and what do they say?

I have to give a short presentation today in my Chinese Lit. class on the cultural revolution (i.e. approx. '66-'69, the upsurge by students and workers against the Chinese Communist Party, initiated by Mao) and, aside from such sources as Wikipedia, etc, was wondering if anyone had any interesting points to make about it, or revealing links, sources, etc, that would aid me in my presentation. My teacher lived in China around this time, so anything from a unique perspective would be appreciated by both her and I. Thanks!
