My new husband has an ex-wife and daughter who live in Colorado. They've been divorced a long time, not exactly on "friendly" terms, but certainly civil, for their daughter's sake. Recently, the kid's grades have been slipping (she's in 8th grade) and Mom decided she needed some tutoring. She signed her up for $10,000 worth of tutoring, without telling my husband in advance, then turned around and demanded half the tuition from him. My husband pays child support, has never been late, even though he's currently unemployed. He told her he couldn't afford $5,000 and even if he could, he doesn't think he should have to pay since she didn't consult him in advance or discuss the matter with him. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this kind of thing. Does he have to pay her?

Hi. I live in the UK and have a 3 month old baby boy. I have just started saving into a child trust fund but am trying to figure out if this is the best way to save some money for his future. I would like to generate a lump of cash for him when he is 16-18 (for Uni or whatever needs paying for then), would prefer to do it ethically, and am not sure what the best value way of doing this is. More details available if needed but gotta go ... he's waking up! Thanks in advance!!!

So, we just had a baby and grandmothers keep coming up to us and handing us checks for $50 and saying "This is so you can buy a savings bond for the baby." However, I would like to hear about alternative saving/investing ideas for my daughter. [more inside]

Look, I truly do get the “know your income, know your expenses” bit about budgeting. And I’m pretty frugal in my habits. My problem is this, as the financial head of this family, I have to decide what we will spend our inadequate resources on. So in general, how to prioritise discretionary spending in a fair and efficient manner? [more inside]

A question for UK based Mefites... My girlfriend has recently given birth to our first child, and we've received our £250 surestart from the government. I'd like to invest this money sensibly, in an account that pays good interest, allows me to top up whenever I want, and restricts access until my daughter is 18. Does anyone have any experience and recommendations. Thanks in advance
