I'm looking for recommendations of longer books to read to my 5yo daughter. We recently read The BFG and that was pretty much perfect - obviously I'll try some of Dahl's other books, although they do seem to feature an awful lot of cruel and abusive family situations. So, who's the Roald Dahl of the 21st century? [more inside]
My nine year old just read "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry. It is her first introduction to really high quality historical fiction. She is excited to read more books that teach her about history, but are also fun to read because they are fiction. Do you have any ideas about historical fiction books that are excellent quality like "Number the Stars" but that are age appropriate for my nine year old? Thank you.

What do your children delight in when you read them picture books? I'm a writer who has been commissioned to write the text for one, and not having children, I was hoping for some insight. [more inside]
My daughter's birthday is coming up, and I'm looking for book recs. Lately, she's fascinated by time travel and, to a lesser extent, World War II. I'd love to buy her some books about these subjects, but am sort of stuck on what, exactly, to buy. [more inside]

I want to read fictional and/or true stories about people being put into positions of responsibility unexpectedly for extended periods of time and how they deal with it. [more inside]
I'm looking for a book I read as a pre-teen around 1977. It was a coming of age story about a girl who was having problems so she went to this big tree and I think she pressed against it and then went into some fantasy world where she became some kind of indian girl or primative girl and she went on adventures. I always wanted to know the name....can anyone remember this book? What I remember most was that the tree was the secret gate to moving back and forth into these two worlds. And also that as the indian, she had to live a very rustic life. Thanks. Lynn

Another tired name-that-kid's-book-filter question: purple cover (?) paperback, crazy old lady in the neighborhood hosts kids on a rainy day. Something about an elaborate basement in her house, nothing overtly magical involved so far as I remember, but an air of "magical realism" most definitely abounds. [more inside]

Writing Nonfiction and Children's Literature: Do you know of any good literature ABOUT these subjects?
I am looking for well regarded books/scholarly papers about writing. Most specifically in the areas of Nonfiction (the essay style of article writing) and Children's Fiction (for a young adult audience). Any tips? Go as far and broad as you can. I'll be off to the British library tomorrow, so the sky is the limit. [more inside]

KidsBookFilter: Seriously, this was an awesome book... or, at least, that's the way I remember it! I read it in the mid-70s in the 2nd or 3rd grade probably, so it could have been published in the 60s. It was about the ghost of a cat (or the 9 lives of a cat?) that followed it's human family through several generations. That's all I can remember. That and it was an awesome book! So, no, there's not any [more inside]
