What are some good pieces of new technology for a preschool classroom?

I'm looking to bring the preschool my children attend up to date on the technology side of things. Does anyone have any suggestions, mostly hardware-wise, on what to go with? Does the preschool your child attends make use of any technology? Or their Kindergarten class for that matter? What works? What doesn't? I'm willing to hear software suggestions too, but again, mostly looking for hardware ideas. [more inside]

To read aloud, that is what I need.

I have an odd job interview coming up. I need advise on a children's book to read to a grown up audience and a two minute poem or "fun" monologue to recite. I think it'd be best if these related to the joy of learning or science. For the book, I might just read part of "Corduroy" because its beautiful and sweet, but what about the other requirement? Seeing inspirational and mind-blowing videos for kids

What can I show children to inspire and wow them? I teach children aged between 9 and 11. I'm looking for video clips (or other) to show the children that will blow their minds - or at least, prompt discussion, broaden their horizons and take them outside of the confines of the four walls of the classroom. Explaining forces to a 10 year old

My 10 year old daughter (Year 6, UK) was recently given homework to "explain how the following works": a) gravity; b) air resistance; c) magnetism; d) upthrust; e) friction. My initial thought was that there is a Nobel prize in the offing if she can truly explain some of these, however, less flippantly, I struggled with how to do this in terms that a 10 year old would understand. Can anyone do any better? [more inside]

Voila! Looking for charming French cartoons in the US

My husband would like to improve his (very limited) French comprehension by watching cartoons or other children's shows in French with our four-year-old daughter. We have access to Netflix streaming, Amazon prime, Roku, a DVD player etc., and are willing to spend a little $ for something charming that will appeal to adults and children both. [more inside]

Surreptitious assessment of smart 11-year-old?

I occasionally hang out with a smart 11-year-old girl, am a friend of the family. She's ahead of her peers in reading and math, starts 6th grade in the fall, but is not especially challenged by her public school. A few years ago in a different school district, they offered to skip her a grade (this option was not chosen). [more inside]

Help me set an educational goal for my 12 year old.

My 12 year old son wants an iPhone. We agreed that if he completes some fitness goals and an educational goal we would get him one. I am trying to set the educational goal. He is pretty bright and gets straight As in school so I would like the goal to be something not school related and preferably something he probably won't get exposed to in school. I am an electrical engineer and initially thought some sort of computer programming. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Make my child a math genius

My son is now 15 months old, and I would like for him to have the best possible mathematics education. (He doesn't have to be a mathematician when he grows up, but really knowing mathematics is non-negotiable.) [more inside]

Childrens' educational book series

I'm looking for recommendations for childrens' educational book series. It's for a 4-5 year old, but writing level is not important, as long as it has good pictures we can talk about (e.g. the DK Eyewitness series). Preferably, each volume is devoted to a single subject (no encyclopedias), and be available cheaply second-hand. Thanks! [more inside]

Educational Media

Can you recommend some great educational media for my nearly two year old daughter? I am looking for good DVD's, computer / iPhone software, or websites that I can load up for 30-60 minutes a day. I would like something she can learn from, but if she is having fun, that is cool as well. Right now she is a Dora and Diego addict. I just got her a few LeapFrog preschool DVD's that she loves. She can sing her ABC's and can count to 10 in English and Spanish. She is just starting to be able to answer "How does the letter A, B, C, etc. go?' She knows how to flip pages and push buttons on the iPhone. Are there any computer learning games that a two year old could handle. Flash games? iPhone games? Answers to this question do not involve telling me to take my daughter outside. I am familiar with the debunking of Baby Einstein. I would just like to find some good stuff for her to watch, play or interact with. General toy recommendations are good as well.

Help me help my teacher help my kid!

My 4th grader is in her first year of a program for gifted children. It is a competitive program, at a school outside our district, and acceptance was based on advanced language, reading, writing, and "liberal arts" ability. I thought my daughter's gifts -- all of which match the description above -- would be nurtured here. But I have been dismayed to realize that all her teacher cares about is that her desk is messy and her handwriting isn't neat enough. My child has sensory issues that do in fact make it harder for her to keep her things organized. But how can I talk to the teacher about focusing more on her gifts -- which is supposed to be the mission of this program? (Sorry, this is long.) [more inside]
