Should we stay or should we go now?

My boyfriend and I currently live in NYC. We hate it - we're tired of the noise, the garbage, the tiny apartments and the high prices for nearly everything. But we're considering having a baby in the next few years, and both our families are nearby - should we stay for family support or move to a location where we would likely be happier? [more inside]

Babysitter-filter: How much do I pay for watching/driving a toddler?

I have 2 different scenarios I need help with: 1. My sister is getting married and my husband and I have booked a hotel room near the venue. My toddler will likely not be able to stay up past 8, so I will bring her back to the hotel and put her to bed and then return to the wedding. We are hiring someone (college student/friend) to basically just sit in the hotel room with my sleeping toddler once I put her to bed (8-11ish). How much do we pay her to do this? 2. Starting in the fall, my husband and I will both need to leave the house in the morning by 7:15. Daycare does not open until 8. We'll need someone to come to our house in the morning around 7:00, hang out with toddler and then take her to daycare for 8:00 (daycare is about 10 minutes away). This would only be for 3 days a week. The person is potentially one of the ladies who works at the daycare (so she would be staying there, if that matters). How much do we pay this person? By the hour? Week? Accommodate mileage? Thanks!

Emotional Labor Checklist/Self-Assessment

In light of the thread on the blue about unpaid emotional labor, I'd like to construct a self-assessment checklist so that I can actively work on being better at emotional labor. I've got 20 or so line items already written down (posted below the fold), which I've amassed from trying to distill the thread. What additional items should I add or change to more fully flesh out this list? [more inside]

More structure or more play for a 4 year old?

I have two day cares available for my 4 year old son. One is rather academics based with time slots reserved for reading and math (about 2 hours a day). The other is play based with no formal education included. There are other differences of course, but these are the two basic ones I'm struggling with. I need to pick one. It's never too early to start learning, or is it? If you've been in a similar situation what has swayed your mind?

What's a reasonable part-time schedule for an advertising copywriter?

I'm an advertising copywriter and new mom, currently out on maternity leave and coming to the conclusion that going back to work full time will break my heart. Before my leave started, some higher ups at my agency mentioned that they would be open to me working part time (if the alternative was me quitting). Great! But...how would this work, exactly? Looking for suggestions to make part-time make sense in a creative department. If you work in advertising I would especially value your input. [more inside]

Cupboard of curiosities for intensive kindergartener

I want to set up a cupboard with prepared activities and toys that the adult caregivers for my youngest can use to keep her occupied while I get work done. She has the usual books, blocks, playdoh, open-ended toys and art materials, but what she wants and needs are structured activities to do with caregivers. Has anyone else had success prepping activities and resources for their childcarers to use? I'm imagining stacks of ziplocs with craft kits/toys and instruction sheets, and a binder of suggested activities, but is there another approach that would work better? [more inside]

Should I have to earn EDOs to cover excess family care time?

Boss is proposing that I accumulate EDO (extra) time and use it to make up time caring my my daughter when she's sick. He says the average days off (family care +personal sick days) at our company is 5 and I'm too far beyond that ( 9 total out of an entitlement of 3 family care + 9 personal sick days). I think he is going to bring it up again today. Is this a fair and reasonable request? [more inside]

Wandering Kids at a Exhibition

A recent AskMe thread and this answer in particular has me re-examining an experience I had a while back, when exhibiting at a show. One of the other exhibitors had her four-year-old child along. I'm sure that if she had any other choice she would have left her child at home. But I kept feeling like her attitude about her child and their impact on the rest of the show and the other exhibitors was....lax? And I'm trying to figure out if I'm being an unfair childless jerk. In part because I hope to have my own kids someday, and if I do, I may very well be in her same position. [more inside]

Jealousy over the ignorance of others

I'm a very deliberate, risk-averse individual when it comes to big decisions. I make pro/con lists and spend days researching topics only to be stifled with indecision when I think the future is unpredictable. I see people who make the same decision easily, but when I question them about it, it's clear they haven't even thought about any of the factors I did. They seem to be blissfully ignorant over the possible ramifications of their decisions, and in some ways I am jealous that they can go through life so easily. Does this feeling have a name, and how can I get over it? [more inside]

How to support wife whose husband is in hospital

My cousin's husband was just admitted into Sloan Kettering (NYC) with stage 3 cancer. They live about 90 minutes outside of NYC. She is exclusively breastfeeding their infant, who is not allowed to be on the husband's floor. They also have a 2 year old and a 4 year old. What resources are available for her? The primary concern is close to Sloan childcare for the infant so that she can visit. (The older two could be watched near their home.) Any recommended hotels? We do know about hoteltonight.com. What can we be doing to support her?
