What was childbirth like in the 1960s/70s?

My grandmother gave birth to 4 children in NJ in the 60s and 70s. All 4 births were in a hospital with whatever recommendations her doctor gave her. I'm curious about what she experienced, and what childbirth was generally like in the US at that time. [more inside]

Childbirth. What's up with that?

Next in the string of Major Life Events: getting this kid out of me. I feel like most of the resources out there (including the classes I was looking to for advice) are pitched toward people who have already decided whether or not to have a natural, unmedicated childbirth, especially here in granola-land. I don't know; I want the baby out and safe, but I don't care about being SuperMom; I am pretty sure there's no reason to be in pain if I don't have to be. I just want to be able to get through it and be with my husband and baby. Thoughts, experiences, advice? [more inside]

Newbie Needs Resources on Pregnancy, Childbirth, Parenting, etc.

I am a pregnant for the first time, and looking for resources (primarily web, but not limited to it) on pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. This shouldn't be so hard, right? But I really want blogs, Tumblrs, Twitters, websites, etc. that are funny or snarky or absurd, as well as smart, feminist/liberal, crunchy, scientific, and welcoming of a variety of backgrounds/lifestyles. (Maybe not all at once, but I'll take what I can get.) I'm coming up short. Help? [more inside]

"How could I bring a child into this world?" The climate change edition.

Many people I know who aren't global warming skeptics are still planning to procreate. Though I might like to have a kid someday, the thought of their future quality of life strikes me as a potentially decisive ethical objection to it. While I've seen plenty of arguments against procreation that deal with the ethics of creating more consumers, that issue is distinct from the ethics of creating new sufferers. Can you point me to any well-reasoned arguments--whether yours or something you've seen, on either side of the issue--that deal with the ethics of choosing to bring children into a hotter world? Lowcarb or carb loading childbirth, gestational diabetes edition

Managing gestational diabetes fairly well by eating paleo/low carb and injecting insulin (tiny dose, rarely) when anticipating higher glucose levels. Now I read pregnant women should load carbs shortly before and during the childbirth itself. I'd like to avoid both a carb crash and hypoglycemia during delivery. I also worry about the baby being hypoglycemic if I have high glucose levels during delivery and I'm getting conflicting info (yes, danger v. no, too short a time to impact baby). So, what to eat leading up to and during delivery?

There are a lot of iOS apps for timing contractions. The reviews are all over the place. Other apps have other annoying features and problems. Which app did you use and how did it work?

support for boy whose mother died at childbirth

Does anyone know of a book or article that might be of help to a child and his family (he will soon be 12) whose mother died at childbirth. He is the nephew of a dear friend, the boy really values family and as he is maturing, realizes more and more, that each birthday also marks the anniversary date of his mothers' death. He is was adopted by a paternal aunt and is being raised in a loving family. If anyone has suggestions on how best to support the boy and his family, it is much appreciated. If anyone has first hand experience with this, your knowledge would be much appreciated. The issue is clearly much bigger than his birthday, but is there any way to help him emotionally to deal with this reality as he matures.

natural birth vs. medicated birth

My husband and I are expecting baby #1 in May. While the baby will be born in a hospital, I would like to have an unmedicated birth. My husband is being very supportive about this decision but is concerned about the amount of pain I will be in without medication. While I realize all births and experiences are different, I would be interested to hear others experiences with natural birth and medicated birth, especially if you've experienced both and which choice were you happier with.
