Unused backyard spot. Level of difficulty: shade & chickens

There's an eyesore of a barren area, about 2m,5 x 2,5m (8ft x 8ft), in my backyard. I want to do something about it. Challenge #1: part of the area is permanently shaded. Challenge #2: I have two free-range chickens eager to eat everything tender and green. [more inside]

Chickenfilter: What bedding for run?

Everyone on the internet seems to have Very Strong Opinions about the best material for the floor of a chicken coop and run. (In the coop I use pine shavings, so I've got that covered.) My priority is ease of keeping it clean. I don't want to be that lady on the block with the smelly chickens. And obviously something that is healthy for my girls. [more inside]

I am thinking of a chicken article...

I remember reading in the popular media about chickens looking at figures on the ground, I want to say it was floor plans, and spending more time looking at the ones that did not make sense somehow (and the article concluded that meant they were puzzling over them because they did not make sense). Do you know what I am talking about and can you help me find it again? [more inside]

Road dust control & chickens

It's just after 5:00 here, and I noticed a temporary speed limit sign posted in my alley by the local dust control business, with an 800 number. I assume one of my neighbors hired them to treat our dusty alley. Of course they're closed now, so I won't know until morning what specific product they're planning to apply. I'm concerned because my chicken coop directly abuts the alley. I'd like to be a little more knowledgeable on this subject by morning. Details within. [more inside]

Six-legged does an inverse Houdini

[Animals-in-unexpected-places-filter] This morning, preparing breakfast, we found an earwig INSIDE AN EGG. How did it get there? Egg was laid in the past couple of days by one of our chickens in the back yard. Shell was intact. Earwig was dead, somewhat bloated (from being in the egg white for too long I guess). [more inside]

Why are antibodies so rarely raised in chickens?

Why isn't it more common to raise antibodies in chickens and then harvest the antibodies from egg yolk? It seems like the turnaround time is way better than with rabbit or goat serum antibodies, and plus chickens are pretty easy to take care of. I imagine purifying yolk would be easier than serum, too. Is there a downside I'm not seeing, perhaps something you lose by going with an avian rather than a mammalian host?

Trying to count her chickens before they hatch.

Posting for a friend who is a teacher planning to hatch some chickens in class: "I'm getting ready to set my eggs in the incubator tomorrow. I candled them tonight and found the shells to be mottled. Is that bad? I am worried. My fourth graders are depending on me!" Pictures here.
