My sister is traveling to New Jersey in a week or so. She has this question: Myself and two others traveling by bus later this month and we have an 11 hour layover in Chicago, starting at about 5 in the morning on Tuesday. So I was wondering if there is anything really interesting to do while in Chicago for that time that is very inexpensive (Perhaps less than $5.) or free. (Free is always good. :) )

I am a very lucky woman, and my husband is tall and slender. In fact, he's enough of a statistical outlier that we can't even find clothes that fit poorly but could be tailored in. Shirts with the correct collar have sleeves that only come to his elbows, pants that fit his waist inevitably fall above his ankle, etc. Please help me dress my tall, thin husband in Chicago!

Is taking a roadtrip through the midwest over a couple weeks during the winter (around the holidays) a horrible idea? Tentative idea is Detroit to Tulsa via a bunch of stops to see things/cities/people. Tentative route - Detroit to Fargo via I-94 (via Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul), Fargo to Kansas City via I-29 (via S. Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska) and then down to Tulsa.

Yet another Chicago restaurant suggestion needed: 5 adults, 2 of whom's flight is coming in this evening and we want to give them a special "Chicago" experience. Preferably in the Loop? I live in Rogers Park and we don't want to have to go running all over the city. We will probably go straight from the airport to the restaurant.
I'm also looking for a nice place to have brunch tomorrow near the Palace theater downtown. Have any thoughts?

We're going to be in the chicago airport (O'Hare) for 8 hours this Saturday between flights, and I'm looking for any info on things that might be fun to do, or restaurants that are particularly good, or anything else that comes to mind. We'd rather not leave the airport, and its a pretty mixed group as far as ages and tastes go, so any sorts of recommendations are great. Many thanks

My air conditioner has stopped...conditioning. I live in a condo on the north side of Chicago in an old conversion building. The furnace in my mechanical closet hooks to a AC unit on the roof, and for the last few days, it's been running full blast and can barely keep my unit below 80 degrees. I checked on the roof unit, and the fan is blowing cool air out. At this point, I'm pretty sure I need to call in a HVAC guy, but even the best reviewed places on Yelp are combinations of THANK YOU FOR SAVING MY LIFE and OMG SO OVERCHARGED. So, mefi, what do you recommend? If anyone here has any expertise in the field, I'd love to know whether you think this is something simple like a coolant recharge, or I'm looking at a new AC unit. My best guess is that the AC is about 5 years old, give or take.

How much could or should I expect to pay for the following service (and does this even exist): I walk up to someone and hand them a skirt and some fabric. I say "Please do the following: Rip up the skirt and make it into a pattern. Make one skirt." How much for 3-4-more skirts? What if it was a simple sundress?

Will be in Chicago next week. Staying in the Chicago River North area. What interesting things should I do in Chicago? Is there any chance of getting Oprah audience tickets this late? Are there casinos close to where we will be or are they accessible via the L? What are the best restaurants to try in Chinatown and Greektown and where can I find a square pizza which I think is just the coolest looking thing?

Do you remember this? A Chicago artist collected data on his commute on the CTA for several months — I think the time the train came, maybe some other details like where it stopped on the platform — and then created a visualization of the data. The final chart was done by hand with paint, not on a computer.

$4.50 ABS card case from Muji. I would like to buy it. I wouldn't like to pay $5.95 shipping for it.
nor do I want to buy a bunch of other things I don't want to justify shipping costs. I live in Chicago; I've checked the MCA which does have Muji, but not this case, in their shop. Container Store has nothing similar. Suggestions?

I'll be visiting Chicago, Milwaukee, and Madison soon and was hoping to earn a bit of extra cash busking. I play unamplified cello, mostly classical music. I'm not very familiar with any of those cities, so I'm looking for recommendations for places that might be good to play with my case open-- and also places i should definitely avoid, if any. Also note: I'll probably be taking my chances and doing so without a permit, so somewhere with lower probability of being hassled is a plus.

Just looking for some opinions on the housing market, specifically the condo market in Chicago. My husband and I are considering a purchase - we are renters now - before the tax incentives expire. We are living on a fixed income now. A longer term ARM, 7/1 or 10/1, seems to offer the best rates, but as we don't want to sink our whole nest egg into a down-payment, we are a little worried whether the market has really bottomed out and what will happen after all the incentives for first-time buyers disappear. We don't want to be upside down a year from now. ( housing market condo Chicago mortgage )
