Any experience in Chicago with resolving secondhand smoke disputes? The neighbor across the hall in the condo I live in smokes incessantly when she is in town. I have reported that the smoke bothers me via the building management, but the smoke from her unit has only increased. It fills the hallway, as well as the unit I am renting. I went through cancer treatment about a year ago, so I am particularly sensitive to cigarette smoke now. I experience headaches and nausea from the smoke. My unit smells like smoke-furniture, clothes, towels, etc. I am worried I will get cancer again. I tried to seal the front door, but am not sure if I have done it the best way. (I'm not too handy.) I am also looking into filing a complaint with the department of public health. I live in a private high-rise residence; however, a good portion of the building is used for short-term corporate and vacation rentals. My neighbor owns her unit. Thanks for any ideas.

Help me plan a food tour of Chicago's south side by bicycle. I'd like to make a little loop starting and ending in Woodlawn, covering < 50 mi and stopping several times to eat small, interesting things. Can you suggest some good destinations and routes? Note that we'll be five sweaty college kids in funny clothes, with wallets to match, so err on the side of "hole in the wall."
Last minute Chicago commute question. I have an appointment on Michigan Ave tomorrow morning at 8. Usually I take the 22 bus to Michigan Ave but every morning I hear on the radio that Lake Shore Drive is a mess during rush hour these days. Is it ultimate foolishness to take a Lake Shore Drive bus during rush hour tomorrow? [more inside]
I'm looking for software companies that do 1) aptitude-based hiring and 2) on-the-job training: "If you pass a (often language-agnostic) programming test, in addition to in-person interviews, maybe a code review, etc., we will train you for your job." What companies in the Chicago area follow this model? [more inside]

What is the large red sculpture in LA? I was watching Ruthless People and noticed the final ransom drop took place in front of a large metal sculpture. To my mind, this sculpture looks like the Flamingo sculpture in Chicago. The scene can't have been filmed in Chicago, so what's the name of this similar sculpture in LA?

Where would you buy a waistcoat (you know, like the vest part of a three piece suit) in Chicago? I know that All Saints has two in the fall line, but they (like the department stores) are both basic black. Guy is looking for something a little more exciting, maybe with matching pants. I don't want the responsibility of sewing it myself (and pants are definitely beyond me, anyway). Custom is probably okay; online is okay; custom on-line is not preferred. He will not have the patience for going through vintage or consignment shops.
Where in the Chicago area can I find a bottle of Taittinger Comtes de Champagne? I like the vintages from the 2000s; they run about $120-$150 a bottle. I tried Chicago Wine Co., but they only sell the older vintages from the 90s or earlier, which are at least double the price. Same with House of Glunz. Any high-end wine shops that might be a good bet? The choices are somewhat overwhelming. Thanks!

Driving between Cleveland and Milwaukee with a day to spare; any ideas about interesting things to see? Not that interested in Cedar Point. Leaving the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to go to Alpine Valley Music Theater for Pearl Jam's 20 Anniversary concert, if that context will help. Like national parks along with man made attractions.

I'm looking to rent a house or cabin on New Year's Eve and the night before for 15-20 people. It needs to be within 4 hours of Chicago, and ideally within 4 hours of Iowa City as well, though the Iowa people can probably stop over in Chicago if the place is worth the longer trip. I've found places online, but thought I'd query the hive mind to see if anyone knows of somewhere super awesome I haven't found. [more inside]
