I'm going to Riot Fest Chicago next weekend. Which bands that I might otherwise overlook do you think I should check out? [more inside]
Now that I live in Chicago and have more disposable income, I want to get a nicer (and nicer-looking) bike. I actually have a Craigslist find that I want to work on, but I'm not sure what the most economical options are for parts and labor. [more inside]
Last week I overheard a conversation on the bus about where to get lunch near Northwestern University's medical school in downtown Chicago (in the Loop). One person mentioned a sandwich place ... [more inside]

I rented a new apartment with a lease starting on September 1st. My current apartment's lease ends 8/31. I foolishly thought moving out on 9/1 was standard practice. My landlord assures me it is not. Now what? [more inside]
In the midst of wedding preparations here in Chicago, I have totally whiffed on flowers. We want to Midwest prairie flower corsages and such for our wedding this Saturday based around some milkweed pods we've been saving. We tried Kennicott's to no avail because they only do wholesale. Any ideas for where on the northside of Chicago we could go to cheaply (or even for free, if we're ethically picking something) acquire wildflowers and grasses this week?
I'm a Seattleite working at a con in Rosemont. I will have a few free time slots before/after work and before flying out. I'm poor, white, male, late twenties, tend towards being shy but very interested and kind, I like new things, design and evidence of complicated human intent or folly. Not interested in most "sights" tourism, or the idea of "authenticity" tourism. Where to eat and go? [more inside]
We're driving this route with our two kids and are looking for something better than the fly-ridden service centers and truckstops. [more inside]
Roommate and I took advantage of Jos A Banks buy 1 get 3 free offer and now have 4 suits that need to be tailored. Are there any quality places that do this for a good price (or would offer a discount for the number of items)? The store charges $40 each and has 2 week turnaround so looking for any recommendations that would be less! We're located in Streeterville but willing to travel for a good deal. [more inside]
I'm registered for the Chicago Marathon this October (in 11 weeks) . It'll be my first race running this far. I also bruised the hell out of my heel 2 weeks ago. Now that I can run again, how do I adjust my training plan? [more inside]

Everything I own is falling apart at once, and contradictory Yelp reviews have left me paralyzed when trying to figure out which Chicago-area tailors and cobblers to go to. Beyond short-term emergency repairs, I also have some more complicated long-term tailoring needs (both men's and women's clothes). Help me find people who can repair my clothing and shoes! I moved to the Bay Area recently (San Mateo) and one of the things I've missed most from Chicago has been the amazing beer selection I was able to find at the local liquor chain Binny's. I've tried a couple of BevMo's and some smaller momandpop type places but I've yet to find a place with 4 rows of different beer plus coolers etc. which I could find in Chicago. I miss my selection! Does a place like this exist? Is there a secret bottle shop that I don't know about? Let me know where I can get my beer selection on!

My boyfriend and I are considering moving to the Twin Cities. [more inside]
My wife wants to bring an American craft beer to a former colleague who is primarily a real ale drinker in the UK. He is pretty game to try anything (and is more of a hophead than I am) and we would like to get him something he can't get there and that is a bit different (so no American Belgians for instance) but also worth the hassle. What should we get? We are in Chicago and probably have to get it from Binnys.
We'll be flying to Chicago, spending a day or two there, then driving to Detroit. What are some fun, interesting, or picturesque stops between the two cities?
My family and I (2 adults, 2 kids, probably 3 pieces of luggage) will be arriving at O'Hare around 4:30 pm. What's the easiest way to get to a condo in downtown Chicago? [more inside]
I've noticed that flavored cigar wraps aren't sold at any smoke shops in Chicago. Any recommendations on places in or close to the city that would sell these?
I'm trying to set up internet service at my apartment. AT&T's downstream is abysmally bad for what they charge – 3 mbps for a lousy $30 per month. Comcast is better, but possibly more evil, and there are a lot of confusing legal riders in the contract that make me scared. Help! [more inside]
We (two adults and one rambunctious toddler) will be visiting family in Morton Grove, IL this coming week (Jun 28–Jul 4). Although we will be spending a few days with the family, we also want to make a number of trips into the city to see the sights. Since we are outside of Chicago we're wondering about the logistics of getting around. [more inside]
I'll be heading to Chicago this weekend for a vacationy weekend in a new city. I've got an armload of plans for various things to see and do (including the Wax Trax popup shop), but I also wouldn't mind doing some shopping while I'm down there. Suggestions for an alt-culture excursion? [more inside]
I'm interviewing for a postdoc position at the University of Chicago next month. I've never lived in a big city and I don't know much about Chicago at all. I'm going to be visiting and would like to at least get a feel for where I might want to live as a 30-something single woman, and how I would safely get back and forth from work. Advice please? I'm taking the Amtrak to Chicago next month and am planning on taking the Metra out to Naperville after I arrive so my mom can pick me up, but I'm not quite sure how to do it. Can you help me? [more inside]
This summer (mid June) I am carting my family off to a wedding in Bloomington, IN. However, due to various issues, we are flying into and out of Chicago and then driving down. So I need suggests for where to stop along the way so that I don't kill my kids (5 and 2 years old), and they don't go crazy from boredom. [more inside]

My husband and I are landing in Chicago for the first time on Saturday, May 3rd and will be there until the evening of the 5th. One purpose of the trip is to visit my husband's father, who has been living there for the last year, but the other is to explore Chicago. We are staying at La Quinta in Downtown Chicago, mainly because we got a good deal on it through Hotwire. My husband's dad lives at the Streeter, in the Near North Side area. What should we see while we're there? [more inside]
After searching, I see this has come up on Ask MeFi before in regards to apartment situations. The difference here is that we own, as do our neighbors. We live in Chicago, and naturally the police are less than responsive about these sorts of matters. I have spoken to the vibrating bass vehicle owner himself, twice, which helps for a week or so at most. I am a quiet person and a homebody - also a stay-at-home mom to a toddler and impending baby. There is literally nowhere in the house I can go to escape it when it's at max volume. [more inside]
Mrs. HeroZero and I just moved into a lovely new Chicago apartment about two months ago. However, our landlady (who lives on the third floor of this three-flat apartment building) has passionate environmentalist feelings. Though we share many aspects of her politics, it's made certain aspects of living here difficult. [more inside]

Sooooo... my parents will visiting loverly Chicago... unfortunately, I just noticed that they won't fly in May 17th, but APRIL 17th. In two days. I'm a dumb. Anyway, I need some advice on what we should check out while they're here. I have a couple ideas, but I haven't done much of Chicago's touristy stuff since I moved in several years ago. What are some big obvious things that are actually worth the hype? Any hidden gems you like? They'll be staying downtown, but we'll have cars available so travel isn't a problem. I have mobility issues, so bonus if it's sitting down/limited standing.
So, I'm in my 30s and I had my first car accident last night. [more inside]

After a week of vaguely making plans to pre-order and never getting around to it, my Polish boyfriend and I would like to get some paczki in Chicago for Fat Tuesday! However, we couldn't go early in the morning, and we are lame and didn't plan, and now I'm wondering if there are any bakeries in Chicago that will still have paczki in the late afternoon/evening? So we've started fixing up our condo a bit with an eye on selling it later this year. I managed to install a new dishwasher all by myself, and am feeling pretty good about it. Of course, a day later we notice that there's a puddle of water under our 18-year-old hot water heater, so I can't really rest on my laurels. More Inside! [more inside]
I'm planning on traveling to Chicago from NYC for the first time in April, and I'm trying to find a place to stay (right now, via Airbnb). I've checked the recent Chicago travel questions, but they all seem rather car-centric, and I'm planning on commuting largely by subway/walking (and buses, if necessary). I'm trying to figure out how to stay somewhere safe, near a subway line. [more inside]
A good friend of mine is getting married, and asked me to enlist the hive mind to help her find a venue. She is looking for something budget-friendly but unique; located in the West or Northwest suburbs (about a 50 mile radius from Chicago but not further south than Plainfield), for about 150 guests. A place that would allow them to bring their own food and liquor would be ideal, and park district venues are acceptable.
On the day of my grandmother's funeral 21 years ago, my family discovered that, prior to her death, she had written a letter addressed to me on the back of a painting that hung in her house. As you can imagine, the painting (and the letter, which I have preserved) has enormous sentimental value for me - I often tell people that in the case of a fire, the only thing I'm carrying out of here is my painting. The painting is signed with the name "Julian", but the handwriting does not match any of the Julians in the artist directory books at the Library of Congress (oh yeah, I went to the LOC to research this issue). Here is a photo! [more inside]
