What is a good book on the history of the "L" in Chicago?

I'd like to read a book with more details on this. This is a cool page. "When the Northwestern Elevated Railroad built its Ravenswood branch in 1906, [lots of cool information with pictures]. Are there any books like that? I want to read all about the development of the area, illustrated with historical photos. What kind of cars did they use? Did they have to build through neighborhoods? how did that work? etc etc etc!

Who is the Senegalese musician in the video in the Field Museum?

When I was on vacation in Chicago last year I stopped by the Field Museum and happened to catch a video in the Senegal exhibit of a musician playing and singing a song that I thought was really beautiful. I recall that he was playing the kora and that the lyrics pertained to a shaman or similar person. I have tried looking on the Field Museum website and sending them an email but no dice so far. Does anyone know who is in the video and/or the name of the song?

What should I see during Open House Chicago?

It's Open House Chicago this weekend. Last year I focused on my area, Lakeview & Lincoln Park, and saw the churches, war memorial and some classic apartment buildings. Do you recommend an extra day to visit Art Prize?

I'm planning to visit Art Prize 2014 in Grand Rapids, MI, with a friend. We'll be going on weekdays. My schedule is flexible, such that I could spend about a day extra in either Chicago (where I'm flying in/out) or Grand Rapids. I will not have a car for this extra day, but I will for the 1.5 days that my friend will be with me in Grand Rapids. What are the pros/cons of spending my extra time in Chicago or Grand Rapids? Fast and cheap wildflowers in Chicago?

In the midst of wedding preparations here in Chicago, I have totally whiffed on flowers. We want to Midwest prairie flower corsages and such for our wedding this Saturday based around some milkweed pods we've been saving. We tried Kennicott's to no avail because they only do wholesale. Any ideas for where on the northside of Chicago we could go to cheaply (or even for free, if we're ethically picking something) acquire wildflowers and grasses this week?

Find me the Binny's of the West (Coast)

I moved to the Bay Area recently (San Mateo) and one of the things I've missed most from Chicago has been the amazing beer selection I was able to find at the local liquor chain Binny's. I've tried a couple of BevMo's and some smaller momandpop type places but I've yet to find a place with 4 rows of different beer plus coolers etc. which I could find in Chicago. I miss my selection! Does a place like this exist? Is there a secret bottle shop that I don't know about? Let me know where I can get my beer selection on!

Midwest US to UK beer arbitrage

My wife wants to bring an American craft beer to a former colleague who is primarily a real ale drinker in the UK. He is pretty game to try anything (and is more of a hophead than I am) and we would like to get him something he can't get there and that is a bit different (so no American Belgians for instance) but also worth the hassle. What should we get? We are in Chicago and probably have to get it from Binnys.

Suburban Chicago Wedding Venue Needed

A good friend of mine is getting married, and asked me to enlist the hive mind to help her find a venue. She is looking for something budget-friendly but unique; located in the West or Northwest suburbs (about a 50 mile radius from Chicago but not further south than Plainfield), for about 150 guests. A place that would allow them to bring their own food and liquor would be ideal, and park district venues are acceptable.

What should I do for 8 hrs in Chicago? (Difficulty Level: Polar Vortex)

I'm going to have a long layover in Chicago next week, and will be able to spend about 8 hours in the city (daylight hours, thankfully). I have never been to Chicago before, and would like to take advantage of the opportunity to sightsee the key attractions. However I take it that this isn't necessarily the most clement time of year to visit that fair city, especially with the polar vortex returning. What are the key highlights of Chicago that I MUST see/do that are doable in sub-freezing weather? Alternatively, is there anything that this weather would actually improve (I saw some astonishing photos of Lake Michigan from earlier this month, for instance)? I will not have a car, and I also won't have a particularly warm coat. Any other tips?

CTA from O'Hare to hotel north of Loop: best transfer station?

Tonight I need to get from O'Hare airport to a hotel at 540 N Michigan Avenue. It looks like I should take the Blue Line to Washington Station, walk to the Red Line Lake Station, and take the Red Line to Grand Station. Good plan? Would it be easier to change at Jackson Station? 2 more stops each way, but then it looks like less walking between trains.

Safety of Chicago neighborhoods?

My fiancee are moving to Chicago in a month and are trying to get a handle on where safe places to live are. I am starting grad school at UIC and won't have a lot of income. I tend to be skeptical of claims that neighborhoods are "sketchy" because this is often rooted more in perception than reality. For reference, I've lived in the Petworth area of DC for several years now, and have always felt comfortable and haven't personally experienced crime. However, I'm not quite as familiar with Chicago and I wouldn't want to end up in a situation where my safety is compromised. Right now I am specifically checking out a couple places near Division & Rockwell. Does that raise any red flags? I know the area around Humboldt Park tends to have a bad reputation. We are also keeping our eye on Logan Square and Pilsen. Any thoughts?

Where can I rent a ramp or a light wheelchair in Chicago for tomorrow?

I am doing a fundraising event tomorrow evening at Reza's Restaurant in the River North neighborhood of Chicago, in a second floor private room. I was just informed that two guests who use motorized wheelchairs are coming. When I called Reza's to double check the capacity of their lift, they said it cannot accommodate the weight of motorized chairs. Legality and ADA-compliance aside, I want to make sure that all of my guests can get to the event. Where can I rent either a ramp (because the restaurant does not have one of their own) or a light, airport-style wheelchair TOMORROW?
