When I was on vacation in Chicago last year I stopped by the Field Museum and happened to catch a video in the Senegal exhibit of a musician playing and singing a song that I thought was really beautiful. I recall that he was playing the kora and that the lyrics pertained to a shaman or similar person. I have tried looking on the Field Museum website and sending them an email but no dice so far. Does anyone know who is in the video and/or the name of the song?
I'm going to Riot Fest Chicago next weekend. Which bands that I might otherwise overlook do you think I should check out? [more inside]
We like a range of music: house, soul, funk, techno, some of the recent top40, nuwaveglitchhopstep, daytime disco(?). Emphasis on the beat and getting down. The other patrons, similarly, should have a pro-dancing agenda and friendly vibe. [more inside]
Does anybody really know what time it was (in 1982, or 1983, when I saw my first concert...)? For a piece on first-ever concerts, I'm trying to figure out when I saw Chicago on their "Chicago 16" tour. I'm guessing it was 1982 and it was in St. Paul, Minnesota, so probably at the St. Paul Civic Center, though I can't swear to that. Are there any master concert lists for the band Chicago, or a ticket stub somewhere? I'd also be curious to see what we paid and if there was an opening act...
What are some vibey music venues (indie, rock, blues) and restaurants we should not miss in Chicago? The more unique local flavor the better. [more inside]

Going to chicago this weekend and would like something other than the standard club. Where should I go? [more inside]
If you've ever lived in or visited Chicago and had a good time without getting hopelessly lost, you are cordially invited to post in this thread. Needed: an explanation of the grid system, tips and tricks on navigation, and recommendations for how to find the underground music scene, awesome beers, weird things to explore, and the best Chicago-focused blogs. Several years ago, I got a bunch of mixtapes at a musicologist friend's moving sale. One was a mix tape of Zulu jazz/jive (think along the lines of Shanachie's Indestructible Beat of Soweto/Soweto Never Sleeps). There was no track listing--in fact, I think the tape was just titled "township music." Help me identify one of its tracks! [more inside]
Is there an online resource similar to this list of upcoming Chicago concerts available for the SF Bay area? [more inside]
I'm part of a Chicago-based band, and we're on the cusp of releasing our first full-length studio album. We're not on a label, so we have to find radio stations to play our stuff and record stores to carry our CD's ourselves. Are there any good resources out there to help indie bands find these? Can you share any indie-friendly stores/stations in Chicago yourself?
I'm going to CHICAGO in mid-August. I'll be there strictly for entertainment purposes only, so anything is possible. I've never been to Chicago (which is why I'm going) and would love to hear what some of you think are the best things to do, the best places to visit, and the best places to eat. What are the best places to have a beer(s) and see a band? Can I safely rely on public transportation or should I rent a car? How hard is it to get Cubs tickets (they have a home series against the Dodgers that week). Thanks!
