Just moved into a new apartment. YAY! The apartment is in terrible shape. Boo. Our move-in condition form has the following clause, "I understand that the management company has also
performed an inspection of the property, including digital photographs of all areas, and
said report will prevail in any instances of conflicts." They will not show me their inspection report. How do I ensure that theirs doesn't say that everything is fine, and we get dinged for a whole ton of stuff that's already bad. Jurisdiction: Chicago.

One of my roommates is in the military, he just got noticed that he is going to be redeployed in May/June. Our other roommate recently moved out and we are subletting her room for her. The lease doesn't technically end until October 2010, but I would prefer to go earlier. Can I somehow piggy back on my roommates rights to break the lease as of the Service members Civil Relief Act (SCRA)?

I'm thinking of buying a cheap multi-bedroom apartment in the Chicago Hyde Park/north Woodlawn area to move into next year. I've never done anything like this before. Please give advice on how to search for and screen apartments and, if I went through with this, on the responsibilities I would face as resident and landlord.

I returned home from a week-long vacation to discover a hole in the ceiling of my apartment and water dripping onto my futon. Should I ask my landlord to pay to replace my damaged furniture? Or, since I don’t have renter’s insurance, am I just out of luck?

Landlord took 60 days to return security deposit (the max is 45 days), there has been no interest added to it, and she's taken a healthy chunk of money out for "repairs." This is in Chicago. Should I take her to court?
