I'm looking for an example of a common chemical reaction in which a specific combination of a few reactants yields one product, but the introduction of one additional reactant yields an entirely different product. This is for the purpose of a literary metaphor. The less esoteric the reaction, the better (i.e. if it consists of commonly recognized substances that would be helpful).
I installed Bikini Blue vinyl floor tiles in my office. I sealed them with some kind of liquid sealer (like I was instructed to do by the hardware store). How do I remove some spilled sealer? [more inside]
Sometime, in front of chemical names, you will see three numbers, like this: 1,1,1 Triclorotriflouroethane. (to quote one example with which I am familiar.) What do they denote, and where can I find out more? (I realize that this may be simply a lack of Google-fu but I do have an underlying reason for needing to know.) Mefi chemists, help!
We have a small back yard that backs up into some woods. I’ve seen deer in the neighborhood (not in our yard though), and there are definitely mice, bunnies, chipmunks, squirrels, and neighborhood cats and dogs that can be seen roaming our property. We’re thinking of getting the back sprayed for ticks, esp. for the sake of our one year old. Is that overkill? And if we spray, do organics work, or do we need to go chemical? [more inside]
Help! Own a condo; HOA told us the wood porches would be painted this week after a spray wash. Workers just began to spray bleach everywhere on the wood to kill black mildew (wood was untreated after porches built 4 years ago). Concerns: 8 months pregnant asthmatic (me), our partly-tamed feral cat who spends much time on the porch, and a host of plants. I just watched as bleach misted down from the above porch coating everything on my porch. Help! [more inside]
Several years ago, in the vicinity of 2004-2006, I spoke with a former classmate of mine who was just returning from a deployment in Afghanistan or Iraq. He described a technique his unit would employ on foot patrols to disable (he said blow up) cars or trucks. [more inside]
I have multiple chemical sensitivity allergies, particularly to bleach and fragrances. According to the patch test, I also have less severe allergies to all the usual suspects - dander, pollen, grasses, etc. There are currently no desensitization therapies for chemical allergies like there are for the other stuff. My allergist says I should still do the allergy shot regimen because it will take my system out of constant "high-alert" mode and subsequently reduce the severity of the chemical reactions. I'm skeptical. [more inside]

Possibly-Apocryphal Biological/Chemical Disaster-Filter: years ago, a friend told me about a haunting, peculiar biological (or chemical) laboratory disaster. I've always wondered whether she was yanking my chain. She's passed away, but I'd like to know if anything remotely LIKE the disaster she described has ever occurred (in a nutshell: "some deadly skin/respiratory agent kills everyone working in a lab facility instantly"). Literally-gory details within. [more inside]
Which facility was constructed first, the WVa American Water treatment plant, or the Freedom Industries chemical storage place? In other words, did WVAW "come to the nuisance," or did Freedom choose to build upstream from the water plant? what dates was each facility constructed? (and if Freedom came subsequently to WVAW, did the latter protest at the time?)
I feel sick every time I get on to nyc subway trains. The N train is constantly stinky like urine and mcdonalds and feet, that triggered my multiple chemical sensitivity badly. I noticed 7 train usually have very fresh air which does not trigger my symptoms, as well as #6 train. R train is much better than N train, and E train is much better than F train. I want to know what caused these nasty stinky trains? Are all odor caused by mold? Btw: I can't tolerate PATH smell as well. I'm so confused people in these trains seem do not feel anything. Any information or comment are welcome.
Hello, I've got a mass of ivy leaves growing along the side of my house, digging its way into the brick and poking through windows at some points. The ivy is growing from a "bed" with a couple of other plants (my terminology may be off, I'm not much of the gardening type). I want this ivy to die. The other plants that are growing near it are acceptable collateral damage. What I'm looking for is basically the chemical equivalent of a flamethrower. I'd like to buy something I can dump all over the roots and then come back a few days later to find all of the ivy growing on the side of my house dead.
I just had a bite of a popsicle that tasted like saltwater and/or salty chemicals. The bite reached the back of my throat and then I spit it out and rinsed/gargled my mouth with lots of water. I can still taste salty-chemical-somethingness at the back of my throat. Now what? [more inside]
I had some AA energizer max alkaline batteries in my keyboard and one leaked. When I went to remove it some one the powder got between the keys on my keyboard. How caustic is the potassium hydroxide solution in this stuff? Is it concentrated or pretty diluted? Is it safe when its dry? I cant easily clean between my keys.

I'm worried my brother might be making the wrong decision about his degree. He has a fellowship and is well on the way to getting a phd, but he is thinking of stopping at a masters so he can get a job. The reasons he gives seem naive to me, but I don't know anything about this field. I'm worried he's going to end up being bored and unfulfilled because he's focused on short term goals. [more inside]
When we change the duvet cover on our bed, Pusslikeso immediately dives under the covers and basically becomes comatose. She can't wait, she runs into the bedroom as soon as we start and jumps up while we're changing the bottom sheet (so she often almost gets herself made into the bed). What chemical could she possibly be reacting to? [more inside]

The music that everyone at my lab bench most enjoys working to is stuff like Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Justice, etc etc etc. Particularly good are seamlessly mixed live sets. Can anyone recommend any easily obtainable sets from these artists, or similar artists that mightn't be on our radar? We've already exhausted Alive 2007, amazing as it is. The only caveat is no naughty words; everyone was pretty abashed when a senior academic walked by just as SUCK MY DICK / AIN'T THAT SOME SHIT was blasting.
