Globetrotting.

TravelFilter: What are the cheapest (but best) travel destinations in the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia (specifically, Southeast Asia)? Just got back from a two-week trip to London (which, incidentally, I loved) and Paris (which, incidentally, gets a big meeeh). Unfortunately, the trip cost somewhere between three arms and four legs not only because of the exchange rates, but also because of the pricey nature of our accommodations (not sacrificing quality for price, etc.). I'm thirsting for more... just as soon as my wallet recovers.

Now, obviously, the specific affordability of a trip to any nation depends on how strong the dollar is against the given currency at that point in time -- that much, I get. But past that, aren't there destinations that are, at their essence, cheaper to go to and stay at? You know, places that are off-the-radar but stunningly beautiful? (Sorry, I made it a little complex with that last one, I know.)

I dug a "previously..." up, and it was good... but centered around South America, and the consensus seemed to be on Peru. (You probably know the one I'm talking about.) Hence, the specific phrasing of my question.

Thanks!

Cheapo travel to grenada

I'm really surprised by how expensive it is to go to Grenada over most other places I have looked. Are there any tricks to getting over there that could help bring the cost down? I'm looking to go in late September or late October. I'm used to getting over to Europe, and I have been able to find insanely inexpensive airfare for the past few years just by persistence - This will be my first trip to the islands. Is it just generally more expensive? Also, I've noticed that online deals are not as prevalent as they used to be, I'm assuming that this is due to declining travel in general.

I am open to any advice, from when to buy, when to travel, HOW to get there (boat, etc) to keep this inexpensive, yet relatively practical. And legal.

Konichiwa

Cheap way to get to Japan? How can I attend a wedding in Japan without spending a ridiculous amount of money. I am a student in the US and I really want to go. The means by which I get there are REALLY up in the air.

-Spend a week on a fishing boat? Will do
-Curl up for 12 hours in between cargo boxes on a plane? As long as I have oxygen.

And of course any other ideas you have, please any ideas... I would really go to great, cheap, measures in order to get there.

First time in Montreal! What now?

Montrealfilter: Next week, I am heading to Montreal for a conference with my S.O. Any tips on getting around? Where should we go? We're flying in, and we're staying at a hostel near where the conference is taking place.

Some things we're thinking about:
1) Getting to and from the airport: cheapest route? We're arriving Friday morning, leaving Sunday around dinner time.
2) Cheap and tasty places to eat nearby?
3) Cheap and interesting sights to see?
4) Good shopping nearby?
5) We've been assuming the subway will be our friend-- is there any kind of transit pass we can get for the weekend so we're not always looking for change?
6) Anything else we should know?

I'll be tied up for much of the day time with conference stuff, but she won't. I will, however, have all day Sunday free. Neither of us is really into the club scene or anything like that. Neither of us speaks French very well. Also, neither of us has a lot of cash to throw around (as you might have guessed from the repeated use of the word "cheap").

Homeward Bound III: The Incredible Journey (Of Cheapskates)

I saved a puppy from certain death. Now I need help getting home for the holidays. Is it possible and cost-effective to travel from Baltimore, MD to Kalamazoo, MI using only public transportation? Quick summary: I found a puppy, couldn't keep her, she ended up in Animal Control, I found someone to adopt her, but it took $310 to save the puppy from being put down so she could go her new home. This leaves me with approximately $200 to work with to get myself from Baltimore to Kalamazoo, leaving around the 23rd (minus a few days is OK) and coming back around January 6th (again, plus or minus a few days). Airplane tickets are prohibitively expensive, as are Greyhound and Amtrak.

A friend's success at traveling from Baltimore to New York City using Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey public transportation has inspired me. Perhaps I could create some kind of crazy multi-state bus, subway, and light rail itinerary that would get me where I need to go, or at least to Ann Arbor where I could catch a ride. But how? Where do I begin? Has anyone had experience doing this?

Short, post-Xmas non-US break <$1k?

Post-Xmas, pre-Jan13th, non-US 10-12 day vacation, *entire trip* <<$1k? Solo traveller: I'm interested in going somewhere outside the US (leaving from NYC) for ca.10-12 days, between Dec 25-Jan13. It must be either culturally interesting or naturally spectacular (I went to peru last year for 3 weeks, w/cities/mountains - a trip like that, but it cost more than I'm willing to pay now). I don't mind roughing it a little (no shmancy hotels for me) - hostels and scuzzy hotels are fine. The entire trip has to cost less than $1k. Ideally less. I mean this: from the moment I leave to the moment I get back.

There are lots of $700+ airfares at this time of year to south america, but I doubt I can live on $20/day if I want to *travel* within the country and only have 10 days.

This question could double as: know of any places that are really cheap to get to from NYC at that time of year and are really cheap to travel/stay in. I have 30k American airmiles, and an international teacher identity card. Not worth much......

Thanks again....

Hospitality Exchange

My partner and I are going to Montreal for a week and we are on a very limited budget. We are looking at staying with people via hospitality exchange rather than in hotels or hostels. Specifically, I've been looking at www.hospitalityclub.com . I was wondering if anyone has done this sort of thing and what your experiences were. What questions do I ask when I'm talking with someone I might stay with? What should I look out for?

On another note, ideas for cheap fun in Montreal would also be welcome. We are twenty-something lesbians from small town Alberta.
