I'm looking to do a 4-day weekend for my birthday this year and looking for suggestions for cheap, relaxing travel in June! [more inside]
Right now I pay AT&T $120 each month for iPhone talk/text/data service. For the past several months, all I have really used is maybe 1-2 hours of talk per month and perhaps 100 texts. I don't use the data at all. I miss ye olde $40/month Cingular plan on my indestructible Nokia brick of yore. How do I get back to that place (and keep my current phone number)? [more inside]
I'm buying groceries (online) for a family member, and need some ideas for things that'll provide them with good nutrition while also being easy to prepare. (Complicated family situation inside, probably relevant) [more inside]
The lovely boyfriend and I will be in London, UK from 2-9 January for a little R&R. We've both spent a considerable amount of time there over the past few years and so have seen most of the major sites. This time, we're hoping to discover a few things that are a little off the beaten track. [more inside]
I have been a happy user of Tmobile for a few years, using their $10/(3 month) minimal service. Sadly, my Nokia N900 has bit the dust, and I must replace it. I am now using an ancient Samsung candy-bar, but would like to get the absolutely cheapest android there is. But I don't know the territory. [more inside]
The Mrs and I long for the give and bounce of the cheap mattress she had in college. But shopping around it seems like none of the new mattresses have that great springy coil bounce we enjoyed so much. What are we missing here? Is there something specific to ask for? Do I need to go super-cheap off-brand to get what we're looking for? [more inside]
Have never used anything but Macs, and know a bit about Macs, but now suddenly I need to order from amazon a quick, very cheap laptop for emergency use and want to spend as little $$ as possible. **This is only for writing and for writing on google docs. ** Any other feature is a benefit. *Can you use a Chrome book for writing? At least on google docs?* I do not want to buy a used Mac, don't want to spend time researching, and don't want to do anything but get it from amazon right now. This can be a not-great computer that will be a family backup after the repair of normal computer. The thing is, we need it delivered tomorrow for writing. (If we order the cheapest PC will it come with microsoft word or equivalent installed for writing?) Thanks.
Some moons ago I found an online vinyl record store that seemingly had hundreds of thousands of records for sale for dirt cheap. I cannot seem to find this link in my bookmarks nor can I locate via standard Google searches. Since I lost my hidden gem, I was wondering where everybody else purchases their records. Musical tastes are varied, but mostly lay in the rock genre with jazz and classical right behind. Thanks!
I'm a Seattleite working at a con in Rosemont. I will have a few free time slots before/after work and before flying out. I'm poor, white, male, late twenties, tend towards being shy but very interested and kind, I like new things, design and evidence of complicated human intent or folly. Not interested in most "sights" tourism, or the idea of "authenticity" tourism. Where to eat and go? [more inside]
(1) What's a cheap just plain record player that can output via rca cables? (2) Anyone know any good software or apps for doing that on a PC or mac? Just figuring something might already exist to detect different tracks. [more inside]
I'd like to buy a small (10-12 inch screen) very inexpensive (sub-$300) notebook, to use for reading PDFs, taking notes, and very light coding (i.e. emacs and python). Any recommendations would be most welcome. [more inside]
Rent a car on the island? Ferry, then rent a car stateside? Looking for low cost, shortest transit time from Nanaimo/Victoria to Seattle. Don't want to fly. [more inside]
So budget has been a bit tight these days and I realized I'm losing a-lot of money into cell phone and internet bills. I have the nagging suspicion that I'm paying more than others. Do people know any tactics to use to bring down internet and cell-phone rates? I've tried threatening to quit before, with some success, but I think they have that on record now and it seems to work less well. [more inside]
I'll be attending an event at the University of Chicago, and need to find a place to stay nearby. The block of hotel rooms reserved for attendees is still more expensive than I'd like, especially x2 nights. Is there anything like a guesthouse or more dormitory-type accommodations available near campus? (Is this a total pipe dream?) [more inside]
I am a frequent buyer of <$5 books on Amazon. Lately I am interested in math treatises but have been unable to find any that aren't way out of my price range. Am I being way too demanding? [more inside]
A friend is visiting from Brazil and is bringing his iphone 4s with him. He wants to use it while he's here. What's the least painful way to make that happen? [more inside]
I need a cheap, reliable printer with cheap(ish) replacement ink that can print in black even if other colors are out. Mac, if it matters. [more inside]
I'm visiting Scotland in a month, and my cheapo Tracfone US cell phone will not work in the UK. I understand there are various inexpensive pay-as-you-go options for mobile phones -- tell me about the best balance between cheap, good coverage, and not totally garbage. I don't need or want a smart phone, and I don't want to unlock my Tracfone and put in a UK sim (I mention these two things because countless travel forums I have Googled derail uselessly into discussions of those two areas). I just want something super-basic and really cheap that will work in the Highlands, Skye, and Islay to call ahead to B&Bs and make restaurant reservations with. Thanks!

Mrs. Thabombshelter and I have a four month old son and would love to eat more meals that aren't takeout. Plus, with a baby, money is obviously a valuable and precious commodity. Easy prep and inexpensive ingredients are a priority. So please, help us with some suggestions for easy-ish, healthy-ish, cheap-ish meals that can help us avoid Papa Johns or Chinese takeout. I have a 24x40 poster that I would like to stick in a frame. I am reluctant to go to our local custom framing shop, because while they do very nice work, the price is usually in the >$100 range, which is more than I can spend right now. I've done some searching online, and haven't found great results, plus it is hard for me to assess the good vs. bad websites to purchase. Any recommendations on where I can get this size frame (or another size that my poster would look okay in - does not need to be super professional-looking), hopefully for less than $50? I can swing by a store like Target, but don't want to get into anything too complicated like looking at flea markets.

Help set me up: I am looking to buy my son a laptop. An inexpensive laptop. It should have a strong enough graphics card to run, say, MineCraft and other games/video smoothly; should have a webcam. Otherwise, it will be used for general schoolwork and internetting, and maybe some light music recording. Screen size is not important, so small displays are OK. So: new or used? Or buy a cheap one and upgrade the graphics card? What specs should I aim for? Any sources/sites that are better for finding good deals? I am wishing to find something for $200--am I wishing too hard? Thanks!!
Is 200 MB enough? I got an Ipod Touch for my birthday. It does have WiFi access but I don't want to have to run into a cafe every time I need to look something up online. So I'm in the market for a mobile WiFi hotspot and a wireless data plan. The cheapest plans available -- and I'm all about the cheap -- typically offer you c. 200 MB a month. [more inside]

I'm looking for some sort of PDA-sized tablet for under $100 that I can use for web browsing, preferably-but-not-necessarily running some flavor of Android. I specifically want something more iPhone-sized than iPad-sized, and I'll just be using the wifi at my home or whatever other wifi hotspot I find myself in, so I don't want a smartphone, unless the best answer happens to be some sort of smartphone with the "phone" part turned off. Any suggestions?

Mission Impossible? Christmas gifts for wife with a zero dollar budget. Due to my current unemployment, Mrs COD and myself have agreed that we will not spend a single dime on each other for Christmas. We did spend a little so that the kids have a few things to unwrap. However, having nothing under the tree just seems so depressing. Anybody have any creative ideas?
