Charlotte, NC filter: Boyfriend is visiting. What should we do? The last time he was here we went to the Penguin. Where do we need to go this time? Food, events (he'll be here Sept 17-21), sights, generally awesome shit?

note: i've googled events, and have failed miserably. i want the low-down on cool stuff going on: wine tastings, art walks, punk shows, etc.

Restaurant Gems in Charlotte

Foodiefilter: Looking for restaurant blitzkrieg advice in Charlotte, NC I just found out I'm going to be flying from San Jose to Charlotte on Wednesday this week, and will have Thursday (night) and Friday (all day) free. My traveling companion has requested a whirlwind tour for us of interesting food and things we Shouldn't Miss while we're there. Your challenge is to give me all the advice you can in three days. Not sure how much of a car we'll have, so added weight to suggestions in the city proper. Where should we go? What should we eat? What are the Must See bits of the city? Fancy is fine if you're more inclined that direction, but I'm getting more of a 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives' vibe from her.

Charlotte Filter: Best Mid-Upscale Restaurants

Give me your best mid range to upscale restaurant in Charlotte, either Uptown or accessible by the new Light rail.

Atmosphere (three late 20s professionals going, so not romantic), crowd, great, interesting food are the criteria. Probably looking something 'hip' and loud.

Public transportation options from Charlotte or Knoxville airports?

What type of public transportation is available in rural Tennessee and North Carolina? Writing from Japan; my lady here has a dear friend who lives in Tennessee, near a small town called Butler (airports are Knoxville TN and Charlotte NC). This friend has recently been quite ill, and my lady would like to fly over from Japan and visit her (again). On past visits, the American friend has driven down to Charlotte airport to pick her up, but due to the illness, this is no longer an option.

The 'obvious' solution would be for my lady to rent a car, and drive to Butler herself, but she is unwilling to attempt this (unfamiliar highways, 'wrong-side' steering wheel, etc. etc.). Are there public transportation options for this kind of trip? Rent-a-car with driver? Any recommendations from locals would be much appreciated ...

Where Can I Find Gelato

Looking for a place that has gelato in or near Charlotte, NC. And a restaurant for real food to go with it. For my birthday dinner/lunch some friends want to take me out to eat. I've never had gelato and they think that's just crazy and want to take care of that. Only problem is that we don't know where to get it in or near Charlotte, NC.

So, where's a good place to get gelato in Charlotte? And if you're feeling very nice or informative, where's a good restaurant for us to get real food. Bonus points if they're within walking distance of each other, and even more bonus points if they're the same place. I'm not a stickler for a type of food, and really like trying new places.

Help me make Charlotte more like home

Moving to Charlotte, NC. I want recommendations on finding some local businesses/services. I need recommendations on finding the following places, preferably non-chain businesses, to make Charlotte my new home. Thanks!

-Microbreweries and restaurants (bonus points if they have really great vegetarian meals)

-Natural and organic food stores - I'm told there is no food co-op in Charlotte, so I'm looking for something that would be similar, with a great bulk food section and lots of organic and vegetarian foods

-Tattoo artist/parlor. Clean, good reputation, and well respected. Bonus points for a female tattoo artist

-Veterinarian. We have cats, a bunny, a snake, and turtles. So preferably a vet who will also treat reptiles.

-Hair salon. Some place trendy.

-Bookstores. No real requirements here other than it really should be locally owned (not a Barnes & Noble)

-Family doctor - liberal and pro-choice. I have a friend who moved to NC (Fayetteville, not Charlotte) and had a hard time finding a doctor to write her a Rx for birth control pills. I'm now scared of moving to a southern state. lol

Any other cool things I should know about and check out when I get down there?

I'm going to need a roof over my head.

My husband and I are moving to Charlotte, NC in August. Any tips on finding a (rental) house? I've done numerous searches on the internet for single family homes for rent (I'm looking for something small, like a two bedroom/one bath). I've found lots of houses that look nice from the pictures posted, and seem relatively cheap, in the $650 - $900 a month price range. I'm wondering if these rents are low because they're in crappy neighborhoods, or if that's really about the average amount people pay in rent in Charlotte.

Is searching the net for rentals a good way to go, or are there any companies in Charlotte I should go through, or use newspaper ads (I'm in Michigan now, and won't actually be able to look at houses until July)?

Are there any recommendations on specific neighborhoods I should look into, or stay away from? We don't have kids, so being near to a school isn't an issue. I want a quiet neighborhood, low crime, etc.

And finally - are there any other smaller towns around Charlotte, especially between Charlotte and Concord, where the rent for houses isn't going to be hugely expensive (as in over $1,000 a month)? We'd be interested in houses in that area too, but I'm afraid rent will be even more in those areas.

Thanks!

I've never had a ticket before, and now I'm Evel Knevel!

Last night I was stopped for "Reckless Driving" in Charlotte, NC. The officer stated that I was going 55 in a 35, that I was weaving, and that I hit the curb when she pulled me over. She had me take a breathalyzer test, which I passed.

I know you're not my lawyer, but I've never even had a speeding ticket before! What do I need to do?
I don't believe I was going 55 in a 35, as the traffic around me was moving faster than I was on a very narrow street. The officer had extremely bright headlights and a spotlight on her car, and they were shining directly in my mirror. I had a hard time seeing the road, and eventually flipped my rearview mirror up so that the lights weren't shining in my eyes. This is when she stopped me. I hit the curb because the area has absolutely no street lights and I simply couldn't see the curb.

She wrote the ticket for 'reckless driving: Driving without due caution in a manner so as to endanger other people or property' but did not include information about the speed, weaving, or anything of that nature. I have to appear in court in June. The officer said that I could talk to the DA and he would discuss getting it dismissed and/or going to traffic school.

Now, I will note that the officer, after giving me the ticket, said that she was -sure- that I had drove while drunk before, and even though she didn't catch me this time, she was going to give me the reckless driving charge to 'teach' me a lesson.

I'd rather not have 4 points on my license! I could have gone over 55MPH in a school zone and only gotten 3 points! Any advice?

Driving from Charlotte, NC, to Holden Beach, this July: warnings, advice, cool places to show the kids en route, anecdotal musings all appreciated... It looks like the fastest flight for us this summer to get to the beach is a non-stop from PDX overnight to Charlotte, instead of our usual 1 stop into RDU. I am seeking reasons why this is brilliant or ill-advised. It looks like the drive time is about an hour more than RDU to get to the beach, and the girls have never seen much of the low-country.

Charlotte?

Should I visit Charlotte, NC? It would be a 3 night stopover. I can rent a car to get about, but would prefer to stay in a hotel in a walkable downtown historic type area (museums, galleries, eateries, etc.)

From on-line I get the sense that this might not be feasible - Charlotte is pretty much sprawl? No real historic walkable district?

If I am wrong, blame the interweb. Hotel recommendations also welcome.
What's it like driving between Charlotte, NC and Asheville, NC? A friend and her daughter are planning to fly into Charlotte, NC and renting a car to drive to a conference (at the Blue Ridge Assembly Conference Center) which is near Asheville, NC. They could fly directly into Asheville and be picked up there, but it's quite a bit more expensive and as they've never been to that part of the country before, think the drive will give them an opportunity to see a bit more of it. What is the driving itself like (windy roads, mountainous?) and what interesting things are there to see along the way? Any great local places to eat? Bonus points for anyone having been to the BRA conference center before and commenting on it.

What's a family of four to do in Charlotte, NC? My wife and two kids (five and seven) will be in Charlotte from June 9-14. We're staying at the Westin on College and Stonewall and are logistically limited to places we can walk or take public transportation. So what is there to do in downtown Charlotte for kids and what is there to do for adults that accommodates children? Restaurants, museums, planetariums...all recommendations welcome. Is there anything going on that week specifically we should check out?

Also, I'm missing a large book festival in Chicago for this trip; are there any good used book stores in that area I can hit?

I'm a reasonably active 28 year old male who has long suffered from a couple of disorders normally seen in the elderly: venous insufficiency and leg ulcers. Now the nurse practitioner I see has suggested I find a surgeon in Charlotte, NC as the only vein surgeon in Albemarle doesn't take my insurance. I'll have to find and evaluate a vein surgeon on my own... how do I go about doing that? Basically the valves in my leg don't pump the blood back to the heart and it sits and pools in my foot and ankle. This results in a severely swollen leg, a painful time walking, and a very irritable aristan. This has lead to a leg ulcer that at one point was the size of my fist. Now, thanks to the nurses and compression therapy (Unna Boots & Thelma Harper-like Stockings), It's currently smaller than the tip of my little finger and my leg is now three inches smaller around.

The problem is that this is treating the symptoms of the problem and not the actual problem itself. Constant compression therapy and the whole "keep your legs elevated at all times" are fine if you're 88... but when you're a 28 year old who works full time, is a full time student, and loves to jog & play DDR... it is impractical.

I've lived with these problems for over 10 years now and have had one surgery to apply skin grafts that caused me to spend 2 weeks in the hospital after I suffered DVT and a blood clot lodged in my lung. (No one can figure out why my previous doctor and the surgeon skipped over any type of compression therapy at the time.)

Needless to say, I'm very scared to have another surgery and more worried about selecting a surgeon on my own. Most vein surgeons I have found in the Charlotte, NC area seem to be plastic surgeons, willing to strip my varicose veins and shoot me full of botox... I need someone to fix the hole in my leg!

What's so good about Charlotte, anyway?

I'll be moving to Charlotte, North Carolina in three months - and I have no clue what to expect. How do I find good online resources, specific to Charlotte, to help me figure out how to survive? My wife just got a really good job in Charlotte, so we'll be moving there in three months. I've been living in one of the largest cities in the country (next to New York / LA) my entire life, so I've grown accustomed to a certain level of urban-ness and access to almost every kind of cultural offerings available. My wife is really sympathetic to the silly little angst I've been going through surrounding moving to Charlotte, so she's offered to let me have a bit more autonomy in finding a place to live, etc. ...and that's where MeFi comes in.

We're going to do a "research trip" to Charlotte in a few weeks - I've never been there and I think a lot of my worrying will subside once I'm on the ground and get a good feel for the city. Our primary goal is for me to learn as much as I can about the immediate Charlotte metro area so I can make some informed decisions on where to do some housing searches later on. I've done extensive searching online, but there seems to be a lack of sites targeted at what I'm looking for. If someone can just give me an URL that would answer my questions, that'd be really appreciated.

- What neighborhoods / areas should I look at? I want something fairly urban, so an large spacious apartment or loft space is mandatory. I know we could rent a house fairly inexpensively, but... um, that's not me. I might be able to do a townhouse, but it would have to be REALLY chic. I already know about NODA and the Dil..Dil...Dillweed, Dilbert, Dilard? areas - are there any other neighborhoods I should focus on? How dense & residential is the Uptown area?
- Where is the LGBT neighborhood(s?)
- Where is the neighborhood where the poor trendy artists live?
- Where can I find a good snobby beer pub? (I will easily pay $9 for a goblet of a good Belgian.)
- How diverse is Charlotte? I'm coming from a city that is REALLY segregated - and I hope that Charlotte would be more ethnically diverse and integrated.
- Are there any other suggestions / tips you would give to an artist & musician moving to Charlotte?

Fun things to do in the Charlotte Douglas Airport (or nearby)? I've been in airports that had small concessions to small children, tiny little slides and the like (not expecting the video game rooms of the Tokyo airport). What is in the Charlotte, NC airport to entertain 2 toddlers for a 3-1/2 hour layover? Alternately, what can we easily visit outside the airport, keeping in mind time to get back through security.
Fish restaurants in Charlotte

Charlotte, NC -- We'll be there for a long weekend and need recommendations for restaurants serving fresh/healthy grilled fish (or even fish tacos). Want someplace casual (not necessarily cheap, but where jeans are OK). Not interested in shrimp, crab or lobster. Thanks.
