What can't I miss in Charleston, SC over the NYE weekend? Eight good friends are renting a house in Charleston, SC (Isle of Palms) for the New Years weekend. What can't we miss? Is there a hip/fun place to go? Or a sophisticated public soiree we may never see again? Other dining recommendations are appreciated.

Parking in Charleston, SC, overnight. Where can I park safely in downtown Charleston overnight on a weekend (tonight)? Must be within walking distance of the various bar districts.

Have you ever been to the beaches in the Charleston, SC, area in May? Is the water warm enough to swim in, and how clear is it (jellyfish? seaweed? etc)? Should we instead go further down the Atlantic coast to Tybee Island? Is our attempt to find a new beach hopeless? Should we just go back to the Redneck Riviera (read: Gulf Coast)?

Where to go for a girls night out in Charleston, SC? We're going out tomorrow night for a girls night/bachelorette in Charleston, South Carolina. We're all from out of town and don't know where to go, especially since it's a Wednesday night so some of the happening places might be closed or dead. I'm not looking for anything too wild - just fun places to hang out and have drinks or dance. Any South Carolina Mefites have any suggestions?

I would like to visit and immerse myself and my young family in NYC culture. To this end, I would like to find an arrangement this summer whereby I could arrange a houseswap. We live near Charleston, SC, in a fabulous location that one could have a great vacation in. Anybody know how to get started making this a reality?

Weekend getaway in May in the South? The boyfriend and I will have a long weekend in early May to do something fun. He's usually in NJ, while I'm in NC, but he has to be in Atlanta on a Monday, so we're making a long weekend out of it; say, Thursday through Monday morning. He could either meet me in NC or I could meet him in ATL, or something in the middle. Either (short) flying or driving distance is fine.

Should we stay in Atlanta and go to the Coca Cola factory and the aquarium? Go to Savannah or Charleston and do some eating and shopping? Cross our fingers that it's warm enough and go to the Outer Banks? There's so many options near by that we're having trouble narrowing down our choices!

Charleston or Nashville? And what else?

My wife and I are looking to travel from Friday to Sunday this weekend to either Nashville or Charleston. Help us sort through the madness! We're leaving from Athens, GA, and we can't sort heads from tails on what to do. From her research, Charleston seems a bit more outdoors-friendly, which is less cost-prohibitive for us. The advantage of Nashville is an Iron & Wine concert Sunday night at the Ryman Auditorium, which sounds heavenly.

About us:
Both of us enjoy the outdoors as well as the city. We aren't big into the bar scene or the club scene, although we certainly wouldn't be opposed to some local music in Nashville. And economically, we ride the line between "too broke to take this trip" and "just able to afford this trip." So our budget will be somewhere around $300, kind of as a Christmas gift to ourselves. And our open window is from 3:30pm Friday until 7:00am Monday.

Plans we've considered:
Spend two nights in Charleston, and spend the days roaming around the city, drinking hot chocolate, learning a bit more about the history of Charleston, throwing the frisbee and relaxing.

Spend two nights in Nashville, and spend the days visiting historic sites, roaming around the city, drinking hot chocolate, listening to classic country music and checking out the interesting aspects of a downtown small town that's also a big town (record stores, used book stores, etc).

Some sort of combination of Chattanooga and Nashville.

Some sort of combination of Savannah and Charleston.

We aren't opposed to camping, as long as we have somewhere to shower up over the weekend. We'd like to spend at least one night in a hotel or bed and breakfast. We'd rather stay somewhere of a decent quality.

I know I'm not giving much direction, but I'm looking for some good ideas of things to do/places to stay that will help us make a good decision with our free weekend. Thanks!

Where can I find quirky West Virginia souvenirs in Charleston? I am in Charleston, West Virginia until Tuesday. Where should I go to purchase quirky mementos to mark my time here. To give you an idea of what I'm looking for, I wanted a "West Fucking Virginia" t-shirt and I was willing to drive to Morgantown to get one, but I can't seem to figure out where such a thing might be available.

I would like to be a tour guide this summer before starting law school, ideally in Charleston. How difficult will it be to find a job, and how should I go about it? Is it at least break-even, financially speaking? So I've been to Charleston a few times and really enjoyed the city. I've been on a few tours -- historical, ghost, carriage, the usual -- and thought, "Hey I could do that! (And would like to.)" Well, it just so happens that I'm about to graduate college and head to law school in the fall, with a couple months in between to kill ... so how 'bout it?

I tried Googling for [Charleston tour guide jobs] and the like, but only found one job (driving a carriage; not really my thing). I'd be more interested in doing a ghost (or pirate) type of tour, but wouldn't be averse to doing another kind of walking tour. Is there some kind of job site out there that I haven't been able to find? Are these the kinds of jobs that I can just seek out and get, or would I need some specialized experience or credential? I thought about just cold-calling some places but I figured if there was some easier, more efficient way, I'd like to do that. Should I just wait until closer to tourist season and see if a ton of jobs pop up that don't exist now? (And, more importantly, will they?)

My thinking, as far as living goes, was that I would find a sublease (hopefully in a not-terrible but not expensive intown area?) and very basic furniture through Craigslist, which seems to be pretty active there. I might try to convince a friend to go with me so I have someone to hang out with and maybe split some living expenses with.

It's not crucial that I make/save a ton of cash -- my law school budget right now is based wholly on scholarships and loans, so I see this as more of a way to live in a cool place for a little while. But that only works if I make at least enough to sustain me. I think I know how to live cheaply (and have for four years), but it's a fairly expensive city due to the tourists. Does anyone know how much I can expect to make doing this, taking into account wages, taxes, and (maybe) tips? I'm curious how poor I'd be, to see if it's even worth it.

So... that's my plan. Is this realistic? Has anyone ever done anything similar? And while I'm interested in Charleston, I'd be willing to go somewhere similarly cool if it was a better fit. I just want to go somewhere and do something this summer without breaking the bank to do it.

How can I get into the SC debates? So I have Monday off. I realize it might be a little too late in the game, but I was wondering how one might go about getting in to watch the CNN YouTube Dem Pres debates in Charleston this coming Monday. I'm driving distance and I really want to go! Even if it is too late to go this coming Monday, how does one get into one of these events? Invite only? First come first serve? Ridiculously expensive tickets? I'm pretty ignorant because I've never considered going before. I've always watched at home with friends while playing drinking games.

Babymoon/Romantic weekend in Charleston in July: Can you offer suggestions for best places to eat and sleep? Money no object. Girly pursuits for me alone by day (while husband is at conference) also welcome. I'll be 4.5 months pregnant with baby #2, and this is our first weekend away from our toddler together. We're both foodies, I'm a writer, and I will probably put together a food story from this trip, so I'm looking for best-of-the-best food, ranging from cheap local hangouts to high-falutin' eats.

My husband and I are thinking about taking a road trip in mid-March from St. Louis to Charleston. We'll probably swing down and visit Savannah, and then go back up and stop in Atlanta to visit family for a day or so. We only have a week to do this. Any suggestions for what we should see/do along the way? Both of us like history, nature stuff, art, quirky roadside stuff, and, of course, good food. A route through the Great Smokey Mountains National Park and Asheville seems like a natural. What else would be cool to see?

Photo booths in South Carolina

Where can I find a Polaroid (not digital) photo booth in South Carolina? Ideally it would be black & white, not digital, and printed in strips.

I've done my googling and checked out a couple (but they've all been the digital ones that superimpose cheesy stuff like saloon doors and "Wild Wild West" in Rosewood.

I feel like there has to be a couple somewhere. Anyone know of one?

If this doesn't pan out our next step is to call a place that rents them and ask who services their equipment. Then call the service company and see if they have a list.

Hi there, any peeps on the green have any advice on whether to move to Charleston? I may have a nice offer from a company there. I spent 2 summers in Savannah as a kid, and the lowcountry is probably my favorite area in the US. What's it like these days to live in Charleston?
