I'm developing a site for a new nonprofit that would like to accept online donations. I'd love advice on which sites I can sign them up with to accept donations with the least amount of fees. Is there anything better than PayPal - perhaps a site specifically dedicated to nonprofits? Thanks!

Please give advice on dealing with money and guilt about money. [Long question.] [more inside]
I often download documentaries, and generally love them, and frequently feel like I want to give back to the director. Monetarily-wise, that is, as perhaps I didn't pay for them. What do you think of a service that allowed for paypal or such donation to individual directors? Could it work? Alternately, directors of small films could set up a link on their websites, and one could spread the idea memetically. I'm not looking to cash in on this, just to get feedback on an idea of how to assuage my guilt and help support those who make films worthy of support.
Interested in starting a charity, what now? [more inside]
I have a project I'd like to start that I will never be able to finish. I want to create a fund of money to be used by my local library, the principle of which can never be touched. They will only be able to use a small percentage of the interest. Before they can start doing that, though, I want the fund to remain untouched for 150+ years to allow it to increase in size. The goal is to let this fund grow so large that the library can become autonomous on just the interest. [more inside]
If you have filed for exemption with the IRS for a nonprofit you are starting and your status is pending while they review, I understand that you can still solicit donations and generally when your exemption is granted your exempt status applies retroactively to your date of incorporation. But how are the donor's charitable contributions treated? Can they deduct the tax year they donate or do they have to wait until the tax year in which exemption is granted (if the pending period lasts until a new tax year)? Or is it also retroactive and they would have to amend their previous tax return once the nonprofit gains exempt status?
I have a close work associate who is in the hospital and we, as a team, would like to buy some good, healthy food for him and his family (people are sending them lots of takeout now). Since he is in the ICU, it will probably be for his wife and two boys until he gets out of the hospital. I have two questions: 1) Any recommendations on the best pre-prepared meal delivery or (affordable) home chef in the San Jose, CA area? Kid-friendly a big plus. 2) More importantly, how can I easily collect money from people across the country? Mailing cash and taking credit cards directly won't work. Is there a "Paypal pool" or something? [more inside]

I'm interested in a relatively low-cost international service project to join for late summer/early fall. Any suggestions? [more inside]
I've decided to give away my economic stimulus check to a variety of charities and foundations. I'm trying to locate a particular charity which provided financial support to blues musicians in need of assistance with food, medical bills, home repairs, burial expenses, etc. I've located the Rhythm and Blues Foundation and it seems wonderful, but I do not think this is the organization I am looking for. I don't know much more except that I believe the org I am looking for was founded by one person and more recently than the R&B Foundation. I have lots of ideas for general donations but I'm looking to do something in this niche, so suggestions of any groups providing assistance to out of luck musicians would be great as well...
I've given to international charities for years, but it's time to look closer to home... [more inside]
I have loads of old clothes I want to discard responsibly, but my local charities are quite picky about what they will accept. I'd rather not add to the landfill. Hope me! [more inside]
I have a friend with a possibly terminal illness. I'm trying to figure out a way to set up a college fund, to which any of her friends/family could contribute, for her two young children. So far I've looked into ESAs (might not work due to the $2k annual limit) and 529s, but I've had trouble finding information specific to this type of situation -- which I have to imagine is not all that uncommon. What options should I be investigating? Should I talk to a financial advisor?
I am looking for an alternative way to give.... [more inside]

I'm looking for a list of charities that do not spend any of their budget on advertising. Is there a directory of them somewhere? I'm in the UK, but that's more of a starting off point; deserving non-advertising charities elsewhere, or lists of them, would be just as good. [more inside]
It’s that time - the beginning of the last semester before I graduate from collee. It’s time to find a job or graduate school program and plot out the rest of my life. A renewed interest in charity and decreased interest in psychology, my chosen field of study, have led me to question my planned life course. Open my mind to what I might be able to do with my life. I am currently involved in setting up a website, and it is proving to be a Herculean task. However, thanks to an instilled sense of guilt and a desire to feel worthful, for a change, I have decided to give back to those that may not be as lucky, as rich, or as pretty as me, namely New York’s starving (or just struggling) artists. My goal, through this website, is to give them a helping hand for free, but obviously need some sort of funding and business plan to move forwards with. I have no experience with any of this. Please help! My main concerns, not having ever done this before, are worrying about how to get funding/donations, whether I need to turn it into an NPO, and whether I should be worried about business-minded people stealing my idea, commercializing it, and basically shoving me out of the way. The following are a list of problems for the immediate future. I have listed them all here because of AskMetafilter’s one-week policy on posting new threads. [more inside]

What's a good charity to give money to in someone's name as a Christmas gift? Caveats: The intended recipients are quite concerned with poverty and the third world. Ideally, the charity will send some kind of card that I can give the recipient to inform him, and they would send the card in time for a December 25th exchange. [more inside]
