Two gay friends are getting married (finally! yippee!) and have requested no presents. Lots of us (the buddies, including the wedding party) want to respond by making donations to organizations that have supported marriage equality and other LGBT issues. Suggestions? [more inside]

Help Me Determine How I Should Spend My Charity Funds [more inside]
I was contacted recently by an ex-gf living in California, with a tale of woe. Sent some money along, and apparently things are getting worse, and amazingly, less believable. Any ideas on how to verify any of this? [more inside]
I have managed to accumulate (over time and several bad buying decisions) three pairs of quality-make men's shoes of different types, all in nearly-new condition, that I don't want or can't wear, and I'd like them to go to someone who could really use them. The thing they have in common is each has a non-obvious flaw that would cause buyer's regret in anyone who actually paid money for them, so Goodwill is out. [more inside]
In light of the recent earthquakes, I am looking for the best and easiest way to setup a page that accepts donations for a small, local, Nepali nonprofit. [more inside]
A very good friend has requested that I make a donation in memory of a loved one who unexpectedly passed away, preferably to a no-kill pet shelter. I can Google or search Yelp, but I was hoping that people here could suggest a shelter they recommend from personal experience - I'm in Portland, my friend is in the Bay Area, and I'd prefer to find a no-kill shelter in one of those areas (but I suppose it really doesn't matter much).
My son, a senior in high school, would like to have a class t-shirt made for any of the students who would like to pre-order a shirt. We though it would be appropriate to give any profits from the shirt sales to a particular charity. Living in Seattle, WA, and only selling shirt pre-sales in person to other students, what do we need to know to keep our claim of “profits go to charity” above-board? (…or where should we be looking/asking for these sort of rules?) [more inside]
I was incredibly touched to learn that my goddaughter has decided that in lieu of a birthday party she's inviting all of her guests to a local book repository to sort, sticker, and bag books destined for low-income families. I love this and want to do something for her birthday to help encourage more of this kind of thing in the future. Help me choose from some options or suggest something else: [more inside]
Let's say I really care about some charity. I'd like to do an online fundraising drive---with premiums that I send to donors. I'm not affiliated with the charity, or I am but this drive is an independent, personal initiative. Either way, the charity isn't involved except for the happy day when they get a check. Is there some online service that makes all this easy for me? [more inside]
I have two gift cards with small amounts on them (just under $5 total) and to be honest I'd much rather give it to a charity than mess with trying to spend it at the store. It seems like a trivial amount but I figure it'd be better than nothing. The problem I'm having is finding a cause that will accept less than ten dollars by card. Any ideas?
A few years ago I started a tool bank, lending tools to charities in the English West Midlands. It has received a lot of support from grantmakers, but there are so few borrows it has been demoralising. I have always sought out volunteers to assist in day to day work and marketing, but never found anyone through any established volunteer centre for the almost two years they have advertised the job descriptions. I am now working on merging the tool bank into a resource library of culinary equipment and tools in Sandwell, the borough next to where I live in Dudley. Despite it being run in conjunction with the council, so a municipal effort available to anyone with a public library card, I worry about not ever being able to find volunteers. What are some volunteer recruitment solutions I could try that have worked for you in a place where initially, it was difficult to create a base? I am engaging with a volunteer management professional, but I also want to have ideas if the library group chooses to not fund her interim role.

I recently started organizing volunteer orientations for a local charity. These orientations take place at long-time volunteers' homes over dinner and require quite a bit of prep work by the hosts. They are optional orientations - i.e., for newcomers who have expressed interest in a more active role with the nonprofit. So far, about 30% of the new people who RSVP 'yes' are complete no-shows. How can I reduce this amount, AND how can I not feel pissed off at people who cancel with no or little notice? Snowflakery inside... [more inside]
Background: I was in the middle of doing a mild restoration on my little brother's bike two years ago (2000 ZX-7R) when he died very unexpectedly. I don't know what to do with it now and just realized that it hasn't been registered since 2008. [more inside]

I would like to donate money to an international labour rights group on an ongoing basis, but I'm having a hard time picking one. Charity Navigator has been of little help. I've looked at International Labor Rights Forum, Clean Clothes Campaign, No Sweat, and Fair Wear Foundation. Do you know if one of these groups is more effective or better-run than the others? Do you have suggestions for other groups I might consider? Charities I should stay away from? [more inside]
I would like to donate a few dollars to Edward Snowden, the guy who leaked the NSA scandal. I had the idea because the Gawker article about Deric Lostutter (helped break the Steubenville rape case) linked to a donation page for his legal defense fund. I did some googling but I am not sure which sites (if any) are legit. Help?

How can I go about purchasing computers to donate to a school in a developing country? That is, a _specific_ school -- the woman in my life is in the Peace Corps, and one of her dreams since she's been there has been to find some way to update the ancient computers at the school where she teaches. (This goal is shared by local teachers and administrators at the school.) This sort of targeted giving seems to fall outside the scope of most charities I've looked into, such as OLPC. Are there organizations suited to this kind of project, or which could offer advice on handling this (from the U.S.) as an individual? Is the latter remotely feasible? If so, what should I keep in mind, as far as insurance, taxes, shipping, customs, etc.? [more inside]
When I was getting my Master's degree, my mentors suggested I continue on to a Ph.D. The application fees alone were enough to make me laugh, but a kind person paid those fees for me and I eventually was accepted into a program. I've always wanted to pay this gift forward by helping to pay college-related fees for other aspiring students at my alma mater, and would like to do so in the name of the person who did this for me. I need to find a website that would allow me to upload and sell photos that I'll be taking for a charity golf event. I don't need to sell them at a markup or anything, just make them available for sale. It would be nice if those interested in buying the photos didn't have to join the site or create an account, but that isn't mandatory. Do sites like snapfish or flickr allow such ease for guests to purchase prints?

I'd like to start giving regularly to a human services program that practices the Housing First model. Ordinarily, I'd be looking to keep my money local, but I just moved to Seattle, and the city claims to have a good record on HF, plus I can't find any non-governmental orgs doing work here. What housing first program in a major US city most needs the money? [more inside]

Is there any way to help the people of Somalia? I understand that there is war and resentment of American aid but is there any way that I, as a (relatively) wealthy American, can give money or anything else to help less people die? Maybe a European charity or an anonymous fund? Inspired by this Big Picture.
My wife and I saw the actor Benedict Cumberbatch recently. When we met him he was wearing the same charity awareness badge that he is wearing in this picture. Does anyone know what charity/cause it is for? If not, when/if I get to meet him again I will try and remember to ask.
Any suggestions for a good food bank or food pantry in the north or west San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles? We're going to see lots of grapefruit and avocado from our trees this year, and I'd like to donate it to needy folks. Google is not a big help.
How do we get a (music) celebrity to help promote an event in a YouTube-type video? Our community nonprofit is having a month-long event in June, and my daydream is to get some (recognizable) musician/band in a video that we could post on our very popular Facebook page. Ideally, he/she would say something like, "If I weren't on tour in [wherever] right now, I'd definitely be at [event name]! Don't miss it!" How do I even attempt this? I'm in a medium-sized city on the East Coast.

I would like to create a non-profit fund / fundraising org earmarked towards jumpstarting community centers. I've heard that rather than trying to create a non-profit, it might be best to partner with an existing non-profit with similar interests, and see if they'd "host" the fund I want to create / help with the legal aspects, while allowing me to earmark and oversee the fund. I intend to do regular fundraising, and hope to create a lasting fund that attracts bequests. Does anyone know about the legalities involved here? Any advice as to how I might want to approach such a project?
