Best organization in NYC in which to participate in an angel tree kind of thing? I'm nannying a 8, almost 9 year old boy and he has expressed interest in buying something for a boy his age in need for the holidays.

A friend of a friend is a painter in New York state involved in a project aimed at building parks aimed at improving communication between refugees and citizens. I have been asked how he might be able to organize an entity as a not-for-profit with a profit wing to encourage both private and public contributors. Anyone know of any standard ways of doing this?

How do we get a (music) celebrity to help promote an event in a YouTube-type video? Our community nonprofit is having a month-long event in June, and my daydream is to get some (recognizable) musician/band in a video that we could post on our very popular Facebook page. Ideally, he/she would say something like, "If I weren't on tour in [wherever] right now, I'd definitely be at [event name]! Don't miss it!" How do I even attempt this? I'm in a medium-sized city on the East Coast.

I would like to create a non-profit fund / fundraising org earmarked towards jumpstarting community centers. I've heard that rather than trying to create a non-profit, it might be best to partner with an existing non-profit with similar interests, and see if they'd "host" the fund I want to create / help with the legal aspects, while allowing me to earmark and oversee the fund. I intend to do regular fundraising, and hope to create a lasting fund that attracts bequests. Does anyone know about the legalities involved here? Any advice as to how I might want to approach such a project?

We are planning a publicity stunt that is likely to get national media attention. The catch is that we need the cooperation of a charitable organization with a sense of humor. We've had no luck finding one. Any ideas where to look?

I'm developing a site for a new nonprofit that would like to accept online donations. I'd love advice on which sites I can sign them up with to accept donations with the least amount of fees. Is there anything better than PayPal - perhaps a site specifically dedicated to nonprofits? Thanks!

If you have filed for exemption with the IRS for a nonprofit you are starting and your status is pending while they review, I understand that you can still solicit donations and generally when your exemption is granted your exempt status applies retroactively to your date of incorporation. But how are the donor's charitable contributions treated? Can they deduct the tax year they donate or do they have to wait until the tax year in which exemption is granted (if the pending period lasts until a new tax year)? Or is it also retroactive and they would have to amend their previous tax return once the nonprofit gains exempt status?

I am currently involved in setting up a website, and it is proving to be a Herculean task. However, thanks to an instilled sense of guilt and a desire to feel worth
ful, for a change, I have decided to give back to those that may not be as lucky, as rich, or as pretty as me, namely New York’s starving (or just struggling) artists. My goal, through this website, is to give them a helping hand for free, but obviously need some sort of funding and business plan to move forwards with. I have no experience with any of this. Please help!
My main concerns, not having ever done this before, are worrying about how to get funding/donations, whether I need to turn it into an NPO, and whether I should be worried about business-minded people stealing my idea, commercializing it, and basically shoving me out of the way.
The following are a list of problems for the immediate future. I have listed them all here because of AskMetafilter’s one-week policy on posting new threads.
