I was using a replacement adapter with my laptop, but the grounding plug came out of the adapter and was stuck in a wall socket tonight. Is it safe to use this adapter for a few days while I wait for a new replacement adapter, or should wait to charge my laptop util the adapter comes? [more inside]

We use a multi-port USB wall charger to charge our various devices. I'm looking for information evaluating the pros and cons of leaving said charger plugged in with associated USB cables, versus unplugging the unit from the wall when not in use.
Specifically I'm looking for info on the following:
- any known power drain of leaving it plugged in but not charging any devices (significant? insignificant?)
- risks (or conversely no risk) of fire from leaving them plugged in when not charging devices
We're trying to find the safest and most convenient configuration, and we're looking for some objective knowledge - please, no unsupported opinions "well, it should be fine" or "I wouldn't do it." We're really looking for known facts to help us make the decision.

A strange man approached my mom at work tonight claiming to be from Verizon, asked for her by name, and insisted she take a backup battery charger from him. (Full story with additional weird details below the fold.) This is surely some sort of scam, but how? Have you heard of this happening to anyone else? [more inside]

I have a 3rd party iphone charger which supplies 5.2 volts. It charges the iphone 4s alright but cannot charge (charging symbol is not shown on screen) on the new ipad. With a multimeter I measured the original chargers' outputs. They vary between 5.12-5.15 voltages for both of the devices.
So, my first question is whether you know which smart apple technician decided that so little deviation from the standard is not acceptable
Secondly, do you know what are the extra voltage tolerances for both of the devices? (Apparently, they are less than 2 percent)

In the past year or so, around four MacBook chargers have basically stopped working (I've lost count as this includes a couple of old chargers from early MacBooks we had lying around), all in mysterious fashion. Generally they overheat more than I think is normal, and often they switch to the dreaded, "Not charging" status. On one of them, the rubber insulation melted completely then buckled. I am wondering whether it's just a coincidence that so many chargers have died, or if the wiring in our old house could be to blame? [more inside]

DoesThisExistFilter: Is there such a thing as a small, loud travel alarm clock that also will charge a device/provide current through a USB port? Decent iPad/iPod cables?
iPad and iPod usb cables infuriate me. The cables invariably fray at the connector junction, and the cable coating on several has simply disintegrated. Is there anywhere I can get solid iStuff cables that won't need replaced every 3 months? Preferably with some sort of reinforcement at the connector junctions? An Amazon search just gives me miles of what I presume is junk.

Where can I buy a Macbook Pro charger in Cusco, Peru? I think my charger crapped out on me and I need a new one. I can´t really wait for my family to mail one down from the States, so I´m venturing to Cusco, the closest big town from the one that I live in, to find one. Does anyone have any idea where i can find Apple products such as this? It´s the magnet kind :)

I have a tangle of USB chargers at my nightstand for the devices there: a Kindle, an iPad, an iPhone and a Nintendo DS. All of them charge over USB. I want some thing that is nicer looking that uses just one power plug and comes out into 4 or more USB jacks. These exist, and I've tried a few, and none of them have worked with the Kindle or with the iPad (but are fine with the DS and iPhone.) Is there a multi-USB power charger that for sure works with Kindles and iPads?

I just bought a charger for my cellphone at Target. It's not the special manufacturer's brand, but an after market one that costs half of what the Sprint store chargers cost. When I plugged it into the wall, it started making a high pitched noise. I haven't plugged the other end of the charger into my phone for fear of ruining it. Is this normal? Is my charger bad? Thanks.
