Are any computer or IT certifications worth pursing?

I'm in the weird position of being halfway through a psych/programming/IT degree meant to train me as a user interface expert. I'm taking a year off to work. I want to learn more about networks, networking, and network security. I want to learn more about computer security in general, best practices to follow. I want to eventually get a non-glamorous job in tech support or similar to pay the bills until I work my way up. Are any of the current computer/tech/IT certifications worth pursuing? [more inside]

Alexander Certification

Posting a question for the SO. If a person in the United States wanted to get certified for teaching Alexander Technique, which certifying body should they take classes with - Alexander Technique International or the American Society of Alexander Technique? What are the differences? Which would be more "legit" or accepted for a theatre professor in the US?

Do you recommend getting a PHR/SPHR certification?

Where I work, no one has a PHR/SPHR. I don't know enough HR professionals (or, more importantly, non-HR types who hire HR professionals) to determine whether it makes sense to pay this kind of money to get the PHR/SPHR certification, in general. Advice is welcome from anyone who has either data or anecdotes. [more inside]

How do I become a medical coder?

Ideally, I'd like to be prepared for the ICD-10 conversion in 2014. Problem is, I have no experience whatsoever, save medical terminology gleaned from Psych classes. My current position is completely unrelated, I've never held a position in a medical office or hospital, and i do not have a degree in health information management. In light of this, is my goal realistic? If it is - even remotely - where do I start, and is there a way to obtain necessary credentials while still employed full time in an unrelated field? Additionally, I have heard that once certified, it's still relatively difficult to find a first position. How do I ameliorate the stigma of inexperience?

Your Experience with IT Certifications? Do They Help and by How Much?

I'm seriously considering PMP, CBAP or ITIL v3 certification routes. I've worked in IT management and business analysis roles over the past 20+ years. I was excessed last June. Owing to a stinko job market (until recently), and a five-month stint caregiving my dad, I haven't been an aggressive job searcher till recently. I'd greatly appreciate any comments, anecdotes or any other oddments you have about these and other IT-related certifications, to help me determine which (or whether any) are woth the powder to blow them to hell with. I have funds for potentially all three (though I'd pick no more than two), and the rest of the year to go before it's Friskies for dinner. posted by nj_subgenius (4 comments total) [!]

You know where you hope this train will take you, but you don't know for sure.

Around Thanksgiving, I was given a temporary full-time staff position at a well-known university research lab. (See this question.) Well, I've been officially offered a job as a proper member of the lab, tuition benefits and all. This is quite literally the best opportunity I've ever had. I'm extremely interested in the field of clinical psychology and eventually becoming some kind of therapist. Where do I go from here? [more inside]

Chiropractic Regulations Worldwide

In Australia, to be a chiropractic you need to study formal chiropractic degrees (Bachelors and Masters at least) and do years of pracs that are pretty similar to other medical courses. Chiropractic is also recognised as a Skilled Profession under Australian immigration, and are generally considered amongst the same league as physiotherapy and other musculo-skeletal therapists. However, in the US and the UK, chiropractics are often considered quacks and charlatans. Why the huge discrepancies? [more inside]
