Can you help me understand this sign of mourning I saw in Honduras?

When I was living in Honduras, I noticed that when a person died, the family would hang up a large piece of black fabric outside of their house or in their window. This banner would be cut into a shape that reminded me of a bow tie. This might be a long shot, but does anyone know what the history is behind this tradition? [more inside]

Oh the places we could go...

My friend and I are trying to decide on a vacation destination (August '13), and we're looking at Puerto Rico or Costa Rica. We backpacked around Vietnam a few years ago and enjoyed the historical/cultural sights. Neither of us is a resort-loving tourist, so we're definitely looking for some destinations which are less sitting on the beach and more checking out some neat stuff. Can you help us decide? Q about ADHD meds during a long stay in Guatemala.

Here in the US, I'm prescribed Adderall for ADHD. This summer, I'll be spending 2+ months doing a mentally taxing project in rural Guatemala. Help me figure out how to make this work. Where should I spend my month of studying Spanish and volunteering-- Xela, Guatemala or somewhere else?

I'm hoping to spend a month somewhere in Latin America volunteering and studying Spanish-- where should I go? I'm leaning towards Xela, Guatemala, but open to other possibilities. Help a first time international traveler have a good vacation in Belize.

I'd like to get some recommendations on travelling to Belize. I'm planning my first out-of-country trip ever from the US to Belize. I have never travelled outside of the country before and need some pointers on international travel in general and travelling to Belize specifically. I would like to stay on Caye Caulker and visit the Great Blue Hole and a couple of cave systems. I'm perfectly happy lounging by the sea in a hammock with an umbrella drink, but I'd also like to do something fun or exciting I can only do in Belize. [more inside]

Two people seek affordable hammock

Help my partner and me find a place to take a well-deserved vacation in mid-March. We have a budget of about $1500 including flights. We are looking for something near a beach where it's warm, within flying distance of New York City but preferable outside the US. Something more upscale than a straw hut in Dominica but less pre-determined than an all-inclusive resort in Antigua. Bonus points for ecotourism and cultural memorability.

I was recently in Guatemala and I know that there and in most of Central America and many other third world countries you can't flush toilet paper because their septic systems can't handle it. What's the difference between our (More Developed Countries) septic systems and theirs (Less Developed Countries) that ours can handle it? Is it a matter of water flow, sanitation processes, etc?
