People keep emphasizing that a major advantage of Nexus mobile phones is that Google will update them to the latest version of Android. But does it really make a huge difference going from a .x to .x+1 Android release when you have so many apps that can modify every aspect of your phone, not to mention what you can do with alternative firmware like CyanogenMod?

I need a new phone! However, in looking at the available options, I am finding myself mired in analysis paralysis (not to mention a lot of "junk" websites full of keyword matches but zero useful content). Help narrowing down my selection, or even just finding a reliable source of sincere, information-dense reviews would be greatly appreciated.

My contract for my current phone is up in April. Ideally I'd love to get a Nexus 4, unlocked and then use a Straight Talk sim for service. But the Nexus 4 is out of stock, so my question is, what is the best currently available Android phone that is unlocked and will take a Straight Talk SIM?

I live in the US, but I spend quite a bit of time in the UK. Please help me overhaul my (currently ridiculous) cellphone arrangement, so that I can make calls cheaply, and be called by other people cheaply for them, in/from/to both places, preferably with email access too.

US resident here who has traveled extensively to Europe...pre 1990. Haven't been back since and will likely need to travel to Europe at least 2 times for > 1 week each trip in the coming year. Might be as many as four trips. Back in the day, one's only contact with home was via landline/long distance calling cards etc.. Now there are cellphones, computers, wifi, skype, and the need for on the go data. To be clear, I need to be as nearly plugged into the "grid" as I am while at home. What are modern day US-to-Europe travelling hacks, particularly in regards to staying plugged in?

temporary phones (gsm 900/1800 or quad band) for use in both china and india. should i buy them stateside with a US plan (att, verizon, etc - which one would you recommend?) and enable roaming (which would be convenient but expensive?), or do i buy sim cards (cheaper) in the respective countries? would prefer convenience and to not have to buy the phones outright. what worked well for you as a temporary phone? thanks for any tips!

Prepaid smartphone SIMs? My wife and I are visiting NYC for 10 days, need to be connected, and don't want to use our European roaming plans (been there, paid through the nose.) Can you recommend SIM cards for our unlocked Android phones that will work for a few phone calls and a bunch of data?

The internal speaker quality on most cellphones I've tried seems abysmal, yet no one else I've talked to seems to notice/care -- even those whose cell phones I've tried and which are terrible in exactly the same way. So: (i) Have I just had a string of bad luck with cell phones? (ii) Does anyone else notice this? and (iii) Is there a cellphone review site that actually rates speaker quality on cellphones? Or, better yet: (iv) Are there cellphones that have an equalizer I could use to adjust the speaker to my heart's content?

My phone connects to my home wifi network but won't load webpages/get internet. How can I fix this? Also, can anyone confirm that this won't be a hardware issue? There's a short window in which I could possibly exchange the phone, but I'd rather not if it's not a flaw in the phone.

I got a T-Mobile Shadow today and I'm concerned that the battery water indicator has already been tripped. The indicator is a pink and white checker pattern but it looks really dark to the naked eye. Are they usually this dark or has it been tripped? (For reference, I have the latest Black/Burgundy T-Mobile Shadow (II) running WinMo 6.1.) Thanks!
