Do newer cell phones pick up cell phone tower signals better? My Dad had a Tracfone analog cell phone that picked up signal fine in a part of our county that he hunts in but Tracfone upgraded his phone to a digital cell phone about 3 years ago and now he can not get signal in that part of the county anymore. I contacted Tracfone at the time this happened to see if I could update his phone with any new cell phone towers and was told the phone automatically updates with new cell phone towers. If I bought him a newer Tracfone what are chances it will pick up better then the one he has?

Require a replacement for my landline and the 30 bucks a month that it costs me as I now have 4 cell phones in the house. Require a telephone device that (a) rings on more than one handset (b) has access to cheap long distance (c) good quality and dependable. I realize Google Voice does a lot of this, but I'm in Canada and we don't have Google Voice available here yet or any indication of how soon it could be arriving. Is all of this possible without a landline? What services can you recommend to get me closer to my goal?

Can I port my existing AT&T Wireless cell phone number to a new Comcast Digital Voice land line account? The 1-800-Comcast customer support rep. said no, but the FCC says "you can switch telephone service providers, including interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers, and keep your existing phone number". What's the final verdict? Anyone have experience with this?

Do cell phone signal boosters like this one from Radio Shack actually work? Apparently an external antenna is mounted outside your home, and this is connected to a "desktop amplifier." In most rooms in my house, I'm riding with a single bar of signal (thank you, AT&T). If this can help, I'm all in. Does anyone have any experience with one of these?
Cell phone insurance under home owner insurance? Has anyone tried this? Is it worth it? I signed up for cell phone insurance with Verizon and naively thought it would be worth it (even for a smartphone). Like anything, I know you need to pay something to get something, but $8/mo + $90 for a claim every time could get pretty expensive. If it helps, I have State Farm. We've been with them for 15 years or so.
What is wrong with my new mobile phone? When my phone goes idle after 15 sec of no use (typical battery saving function) or loses the signal when I am in an elevator (typical situation but normally survivable), it won't automatically reconnect so it's like I don't even have a phone. How can I over come this? Is it normal for "newer" phones to constantly be searching for a signal yet not getting it or turning off like this? [more inside]
Does anyone know when the Blackberry 9800 "Slider" will debut, particularly on the Verizon Wireless network?

So, Credo, which uses the Sprint network, finally has a smartphone that apparently doesn't suck (the HTC Hero). I'm very tempted to switch over from Verizon, especially since the latter tends to drop calls when I'm sitting in my living room. But I don't want to go from the frying pan into the fire, so to speak. Can any LA Mefites give me your opinion of Sprint's coverage, especially in the Echo Park/Silverlake/Los Feliz area? More generally, if anyone has experience with Credo's customer service, I'd appreciate hearing from you too. I want to support good causes, but I don't want to drive myself crazy in the process.

My cell phone has been exploding with calls from Indian pharmacy telemarketers in the past couple days -- as in, upwards of 20 calls a day. The numbers are all either "Unavailable" or "000-000-0000." I've asked a few of them to take me off their lists but, as expected, that was totally ineffectual. Do I have any recourse but to change my number if this keeps up?

How common was it for a cell phone to have video/audio in Oct.2007? Need to know if it would have been reasonable to assume that capability if someone was pointing there phone at you (vs. Just still photo). It seems reasonable now, but when did that come about?
I've been receiving a lot of strange calls/voicemails from equally strange old men lately, who are all horny as hell. They're responding to text messages they say they received from my number, and these texts are evidently of a porny nature. But I haven't sent them! I can't find evidence of any such texts whatsoever. I actually tried to talk to one of them to find out if the texts are actually FROM my number or if they just MENTION my number, but the guy was so flustered and embarrassed that all he'd do was stumble over his own tongue trying to protest his innocence. So, what's happening? Is this a known scam? Can I do anything about it other than change my number? [more inside]

My girlfriend is moving to Albuquerque this summer for at least a year. She's had her heart set on an iPhone for years, but is wondering how AT&T coverage is in the city. As this will be her only phone, it's important that her phone work well for talking (not just data). How's AT&T's service in Albuquerque? What provider has the best Albuquerque coverage? Her contract w/ Verizon will be up soon so she can move to any provider.
I'm looking for good mobile websites that are mainly text and update often, with individual content brief enough that I can finish reading by the time the bus comes. Despite what it might imply, texts from last night perfectly encapsulates what I want. I just want more of it. And maybe for it to be informative on top of entertaining. Just something internet-y that I can browse for 3-5 minutes at a time.
