Grumpybearbride and I have been plagued by beasts in our ceiling, scritch-a-scratching and tumbling about in the night, causing a ruckus and keeping us from getting a good night's rest. This morning it sounds like they added a new member to their family. I recorded and enhanced the sound of said wee beastie in hopes that someone with more knowledge than I could potentially identify it. This is the recording. Help!
We've just demolished our kitchen/dining room and now decided that in-ceiling speakers for music, and a tv would be a good thing. Short on time, and audio isn't my thing, help! [more inside]
I am looking for information about leaky roofs and ceilings. Our roof has water leaks in the rain. The ceiling is made of acoustic tiling and the tiles are starting to pull apart and crack. The ceiling is stained with water damage and leaks when it rains in three locations in the house. How long will it be before the ceiling collapses or the tiles start to fall? If you've ever been in this situation, what was the timeline and what different events occurred as the ceiling went from "OK" to "On the Floor"?
I've worked in a couple of old wooden buildings in downtown Toronto. The interiors look like this, more or less. Little hard black bits occasionally fall from the ceiling, about the size of sand grains. They are hard. Sometimes they land in my lunch. Any idea what they might be? I'm guessing some kind of preservative, maybe creosote?
I own a small one-bedroom condo in a medium-sized building with no insulation. I can hear all of my neighbors (upstairs and next door) all the time. I don't want to tear down all of the drywall in my unit, and I've heard that open cell spray foam insulation can be used in finished drywall to help reduce noise. Does it? [more inside]
We live in a high-rise condo in Miami with concrete ceilings/floors. We'd like to swag a pendant light to hang directly above a dining table. This would involve drilling a single hole in the concrete ceiling to install a hook for swagging the light, which weighs approximately 7 lbs. Help me decide whether or not this is a good idea and if I can do it without a hammer drill and with minimal fuss. Let's assume the landlord is ok with this. [more inside]
I want to hang a projector screen from my ceiling, and I can't locate the studs. I have a magnetic stud finder, but it doesn't seem to be picking anything up. [more inside]
I'd like to hang my bike upside down from two hooks in the ceiling. This is in a condo in Miami with 1/2" drywall over metal stud framing. I was able to examine the studs by removing a vent cover and they seem awfully flimsy to me, so I'm wondering what would be the simplest and safest method for doing this. The bike weighs about 22.5 lbs. [more inside]

Looking for advice. I have a great job, great quality of life, but no career potential whatsoever. I want to move jobs and stay in my industry but have been told alternately: too expensive, not qualified or way-too-experienced-for-entry-level. Snowflake details (and tl:dr) inside. [more inside]
What we thought would be a simple ceiling fan install has turned in to a stumper. After removing the existing fixture and light box we find the lightweight brace for the previous light to be a pain to remove. [more inside]
I'm looking for a ceiling light fixture for my kitchen that has 5 or 6 (or more) cords coming from a central plate, each terminating in a light socket. The cords are long, say 6-8 feet, so that downlights can be hung as desired around the room. I could probably custom fabricate this whole setup myself, but it would be great not to have to. Have you seen anything that looks like what I'm talking about? [more inside]
I'm hoping to hang a heavy sliding door system from the old lath and plaster ceiling. Are bolts screwed straight up into the wood going to be enough support--or will they just pull out? All the information I can find on sliding, barn door style systems show the rail support being screwed into a wall. But I was able to buy some ceiling brackets, so that must be "another" way. I can't bolt from above, so: am I asking for trouble screwing straight up into the wood, and expecting the bolts to support a 10-foot track and two 4x8 doors?
I'm painting a wall dark blue and re-doing the ceiling in white. The place where wall and ceiling meet is very uneven, and I'd like a nice clean line between the two. This seems to be a pretty common problem, and the standard solution seems to be creating a neat line somewhere other than the actual wall-ceiling joint. But some say paint the wall color up a bit onto the ceiling and some say paint the ceiling color down a bit onto the wall. Given the colors I'm dealing with, which will look better?

I just noticed what appeared to be a large water leak on the drywall of the ceiling. Upon further inspection, we discovered that somehow a large bottle of industrial strength bleach had leaked in the attic (please don't point out what a bad idea it is to store large bottles of industrial strength bleach in the attic... we had no idea it was up there and have never seen the bottle before tonight). I recently moved into a loft in a really nice building. One issue I'm up against is that I am not permitted to drill any holes in the walls or concrete ceiling. I have been using the 3M Command strips and hooks and they work well for small things. However, even the hooks rated for 3 lbs failed to hold my very light-weight surround speakers. I also have a display case for my shot glass collection that weighs 21 lbs before even adding the glasses to it. I am thinking that may just have to live as a resting, rather than hanging, display. But I would also like to hang a lightweight pendant style lamp over the area I've set up as my living room. The ceiling does have some concrete protrusions that extend down from it. Would some hardware like a C clamp be solid enough to hang something like that from? Other suggestions? And recommendations for hanging artwork besides the Command products?

All of a sudden, he keeps looking up at the ceiling as if he sees/hears something. He just started doing this a couple weeks ago, and has done it several times an hour since. Can metafilter supply me with a more plausible answer than what googling has lead me to? So far my top leads are yahoo answers posts about ghosts, so I'm sure y'all can do better. I'm hunting for a ceiling light for my kitchen... I really like the way light tables look, and want to find one (2' x 3' or so, with a wooden frame, available in, or shippable to, Toronto) that I can invert and hang from my ceiling. Google has failed me. Help? Note: doesn't actually have to be a light table. Could be a fixture that looks like a light table. That would be preferable, actually.

Advice on a ceiling leak/damage issue? We own a condo on the 2nd floor of a building. A few weeks ago, we noticed a stain on the bathroom ceiling, getting bigger. We called the property manager, and he sent the groundskeeper up to have a look. The guy looked at the ceiling and was like "yep, it looks like there's a leak." Then he reached up and pushed on the ceiling with his fist, and it left an indentation in the ceiling because the ceiling had become soft. That was about 2 weeks ago. Since then we heard nothing. I'm finishing my house and want to install 3/4" bead board ceiling and in all the places that I look for install help and instruction(this old house, hgtv.com, oldhouseweb.com, etc) people are quoting $1-1.50/sq. foot. Does anyone know where in MN I can find quality 3/4" bead board ceiling for that price, everything i'm finding is $3-4 from specialty mills, and the stuff priced around $1/sq at the big box stores(Home Depot, Lowes and Menards) is for the thinner wall stuff, and is usually VERY poor quality with lots of knots. I just watched this video at HGTV and they put up some pretty nice looking stuff and quoted $1.50/sq I don't believe it one bit...
