I have a pen pal in Angola (Louisiana State Penitentiary) to whom I'd like to send money and items (books, cds). I've used JPay and they charge a fee, and then Angola takes 50% of the money after that. When I mail him CDs, books, they must be new and they cannot contain explicit content. Even after I followed these rules, he didn't receive a book until months after it had arrived. Has anyone written up strategies for navigating this bureaucracy? Do any mefites have personal experience with this that they're willing to share?
I have a CD player, an iPod, and a record player. What kind of physical media should I buy? [more inside]
For the last few years I've been following the excellent reviews and accolades heaped upon the Monteverdi Choir's recordings of the Bach Cantatas with John Eliot Gardiner on the Soli Deo Gloria label. Daunted by the whole enterprise, I have not yet purchased any of them. Does anyone familiar with at least some of the recordings in this series have any idea where to dive in? I'm not necessarily interested in the most famous or most-recorded cantatas, but rather the most beautiful, the most artful, the most moving. I'm tempted to just buy the (near-$300) box set, but I'm afraid with my busy schedule I will never listen to them all. Currently, the only Bach cantata recordings I have are Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's and one from Nancy Argenta which starts off with Ich Bin Vergnugt Mit Meinen Glucke.
I need to learn about financial instruments and trading at an intermediate level. I have a basic, 101-type understanding of how CDOs and CDS-es work and what hedging is, but I need to get to the next level, because I'm still getting lost in conversations where people are talking about complex synthetic CDO strategies, delta hedging, correlation trading, ABCP, and similar topics. Is there a book I can read, a course I can take online, anything you can recommend I do to start getting much more comfortable with this securities stuff at a high level? Thanks in advance for your help!

My PC (lenovo something, bought this year) has a problem reading CDs. I'll put in a disc to burn something and the burning program (iTunes or CDBurnerXP) will say it doesn't recognize the disk or it's not writeable or it's not blank. They're all blank. I try multiple ones from the batch. They're not sketchy disks, they're Sony Supremas 700 CDs. I've tried other brands, same result. Is this a hardware problem and how do troubleshoot/fix it?
Is it even worth buying physical CDs any more? [more inside]

I need advice on picking a CD. Our financial planner has advised that we use a portion of our cash to purchase an 18-month CD. She listed Discover Bank as the institution to use, citing a rate of 1.50%. Between our meeting with her and opening the account and transferring the money, the rate for an 18-month CD at Discover has dropped to 1.40%. Is there a website that compares CD rates? I went to Ally and see their rate is 1.44%. Is there an online calculator I can use to see how much of a difference this is from Discover (i.e., so I can decide whether it's worth it to open a new account and transfer money to Ally). Or, should I wait it out and see if rates go back up?

My iMac spits out the vast majority of CDs you put in the drive. I'd rather not lug it to the store (out of warranty)... any known solutions for this madness? Sometimes I have to put the same CD in the drive 20 times until it's recognized as a CD. It never spits out DVDs. It's a 3 year old 24" iMac.

For a memorial service on Saturday, I need to convert audio from cassette tape to CD. I'm fairly geeky, and used to rip vinyl to mp3, but that was five years ago. I have several modern Macs and a Windows Vista machine at my disposal. I have a standard mid-1990s component stereo system with tape deck and/or an old portable cassette player. Assorted cables. An 8-10 year old copy of CoolEdit somewhere. What's the easiest way for me to get from cassette to CD? I have plenty of money to throw at the problem, so that's not an issue. Time is the issue. (Which means that I'd rather download software than go out and buy it at Fry's.)

Thanks to NPR, I understand that securitized mortgages are bundled together and divided into traunches, and that this is bundling and dividing process is what makes these securities so difficult to deal with. Is there no way to "reassemble" the traunches and de-securitize the mortgages? It seems like that would make valuation easier to determine, and help with isolating bad mortgages/ investments.

I've been looking for an old CD my parents used to play when I was little, caled "here come the hits", but it doesn't seem to be anywhere visible. In fact, it seems to have dropped out of existence entirely; I can't even find a tracklisting on the internet so I can gather the songs from other sources. I know "shout" by tears for fears was one of the songs, and "black cars look better in the shade" and "one night in bangkok" are likely contenders. Can somebody help me find an official tracklist for this album of 80's one-hit-wonders so I can get some closure?
