Where to play M:TG in NYC?

Where can I find folks to play Magic: the Gathering with in NYC? Haven't touched the game in well over a decade, got on a serious nostalgia trip this past weekend, and am considering seeking out some games -- provided I can find people to play with who aren't random 14 year olds.

Here's the skinny:

* I'm aware of the online version, but prefer the physical cards.
* I know there used to be a big store/gaming area in Manhattan called Neutral Grounds which closed recently and seems to have splintered things a bit.
* Jim Hanley's on 33rd hosts the official Friday night events (will likely stop by there sometime.)
* The Compleat Strategist, also in the mid 30s, may also host games at times (ditto.)
* There's another one or two spots in the outer boroughs (Queens, Staten) that are too far out for me, given I live in Jersey.

Are there any decent groups or locations other than these? Has anyone participated in events at Jim Hanley's or the Strategist and can tell me if it's worthwhile?

Finally, while this is sort of MetaTalky - are there any other Mefites in the region who would be willing to get together sometime?

Quarter Life Regression, or how to get back into Magic: The Gathering

What is the best way to get back into Magic: The Gathering? I played the game (as well as others) a lot as a teenager and recently my best friend has been introduced to the game and is addicted something fierce.

I would like to join him in his quest but here is my situation:

- I've lost my old cards except for a small handful.

- I would like to get in on the cheap-ish, sub $200 for sure. Where can I get cards for the cheapest either online or in the real world in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada?

- What is my best bet for buying cards? What sets? Starters? Boosters? Boxes of boosters? Boxes of boosters split with said friend?

- Any particularly crushing black themed decks currently? I played a black / blue back in the day that relied on Nightmares to do the heavy hitting and Royal Assassins (before they nerfed with with a cost for their ability) to thin out any pesky attackers.

Thanks for any advice including, but not limited to, "waste of money, don't bother, you are a huge nerd"

Educational card game

Ran across the card game Ekklesia: The Congregating and was wondering if a similar game had ever been professionally produced. Some cartoon style cards can be see here.

The name sounds like a play on the words Magic: the Gathering, a game I understand employs thousands of cards and complicated game mechanics. Has any company published a card game or RPG something like this but with the theme of early Christian/Late Roman history? I've heard of Redemption, but this is bible-based, not history-based so it isn't what I'm looking for.

Back to Magic the Gathering

Gathering for Magic - So after a few nostalgic talks of days gone by, filled with geekery courtesy of Magic the Gathering, I'd like to put together a casual sealed deck tourney for myself and a few friends, but seeing how I have not played since Ice Age there's My initial thought was basically "everyone show up with one sealed starter deck and two sealed boosters" but I wonder now if things could really be that easy.

Are there certain sets/editions of the game that are so amazingly overpowered so as to limit the casual fun?

On the other hand, given that there must be dozens of editions/sets/expansions/whatever by now, which one would produce the most 'bang for the buck' by way of cost?

Are there premade decks and if so, should they be allowed or will they be overpowering as the cards are actually designed to work together?

Do starters still come with land? I saw a few boxes of 'Expert' sets recently and have no idea what that means.

How should a casual tourney for, say, 6-8 people be set up?

Should trading be allowed?

Finally, what beer goes best with reliving our past shame?

Old online game needs a kick-start...

How does one rehabilitate a commercial online game that has been around for a long, long time? My company owns an online trading card game. I started as a player of this game in 1997, was hired by the developers in 1998, became the producer in 2000 and was the Executive Producer in early 2003, when our parent company closed us (for non-financial reasons). I offered to purchase the game, so it wouldn't go offline. They agreed, and my company owns this game. (It is a Windows game you download and install - zero bloatware, adware, spyware or similar.)

Three expansion sets later, we are totally in a rut. I am trying to drag the community back through running events (every night at 10pm), but what else can we do?

Keep in mind that this is mostly just me running the show. I don't have a full-time job, so I have time to throw at this project, but not a lot of cash. .. so taking out an advertisement is unlikely. What suggestions do you have?
