honda bike mod

So I picked up a 1981 honda cm400 custom and I love it so much - but Im ready to start altering it. have a few questions about finding parts. [I realize there are motorcycle forums which might be more suited to these sorts of questions, but i already have an account @ mefi and would like to avoid a useless sign up if i can.]

I don't have access or the money for custom fabricated parts and I can't find many aftermarket parts *specifically* for this bike so Im wondering which would be compatible.

say the first thing id like to replace is the seat, tank and bars.

is there a CB model that id could look for which would fit my bike? I see TONS of CB parts. I was told the CB550 would probably work, but I would want to be sure before i start placing orders.

say I got all crazy and wanted to put an entirely new engine on the frame, how large could I go?

suggestions or general comments on modifying these sorts of bikes are welcome.

How can my friend use a Mobile Trunking Scanner to avoid a speeding ticket while traveling across the US?

How can my friend use a Mobile Trunking Scanner to avoid a speeding ticket while traveling across the US? I have a friend that is planning a roadtrip across the US:

-Los Angeles to Las Vegas
-Las Vegas to Sedona, AZ
-Sedona, AZ to Albuquerque, NM
-Albuquerque, NM to Dallas, TX
-Dallas, TX to New Orleans, LA
-New Orleans, LA to Orlando, FL
-Orlando, FL to Miami, FL

He has bought the Uniden BCD996T Mobile Trunking Scanner in hope of using it to try and avoid a speeding ticket.

We are both complete newbs to CB, scanners, frequencies, etc.

After a some research I found out he should be listening in on 2 bands: police radio frequency bands and truckers frequencies (citizens band) CB radio. That way he can listen in on the truckers talking about speed traps and the police talking about whats going on in the area.

Will he need to use a frequency database to find the different codes (possibly provided at www.scannermaster.com)?

How do you program it to work in this manner?

Any suggestions in general for using it efficiently?

Can you hear me now?

In the aftermath of major natural disasters like, for example, an earthquake, hurricane or tornado, there exist certain conventions and procedures for communication - like, for example, channel 19 on a CB radio, or the emergency broadcast network on TV. When speaking in terms of RADIO-based communication, what are the protocols and technologies that are in place now that are most likely to be used in a crisis such as this? CB? AM/FM? If I suffered a disaster and I wanted to be in the loop and learn information about where I might go for rescue or aid, and direct contact wasn't viable because I was trapped somewhere, is there some pre-determined set of frequencies and channels where I should be tuning in?

How can I view a report released to the media by NYC's 311 line?

NYC's 311 Citizen Service Center apparently just released a list of neighborhoods in order of how many noise complaints they get. I have a mad desire to view that list; is there any way I can?
In classic New York style, I called the Service Center's published number and they told me to call 311; then I called 311 and they told me to call the Service Center. I called the Service Center again and they told me I can use the Center website's "My Neighborhood Statistics" tool. But with that tool, you can only see ONE neighborhood at a time and there are quite a few neighborhoods to look up.

Obviously this list exists somewhere, and I'm dying to see it because neighborhood noise level is my first concern as I look for my next place. I'm living in one of that article's "winning" neighborhoods right now. :(

If I can't ever see the list, at least I know I can handmake one by looking up every neighborhood. But before I do that, what could I try next in my quest to get my hands on the list?

I wanna be a trucker!

CBRadioFilter: I want to add one to my car. Help please! Recently, a few of my friends have decided to get CB radios for their cars, and I'm thinking about joining in on the craze. Problem is, I don't have much money to spend, and I really don't know what to get.

I want something small and compact if possible; I don't want this taking up a lot of room in my car. I'm cool with the antenna, but if I can avoid having some massive 6-foot monstrosity on my car, I'd love that. I do like the idea of the PA system function that most CB's seem to have, so if I can get one with a PA speaker, that'd be great.

Cost is the major factor here; I've seen a few in the $30-40 price range, and I like that figure. Ebay is perfectly fine, but in that case I would prefer it be a seller that often sells these items (i.e. a one-time offer may not help me, since I probably won't be getting this for at least another week or two).

So, in short, I'd like a compact CB radio with a PA function (and if possible, an included speaker), and I would like it to be as cheap as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

10-4 Good Buddy!!

Why can I hear people talking on CB radios through my computer speakers?? Either my speakers are channeling truckers on CB radios or I'm hearing voices. A couple of times a month, I can hear truckers on CB radios coming through my compter speakers. I know it's truckers out on the interstate, cause they're using that 'trucker' jargon. Sometimes it comes through clearer than others, and I have to crank up the volume to really hear it - but it's THERE.

Assuming that my speakers aren't possessed, and also assuming that I'm not losing my mind... how is this possible?

Breaker, breaker, tell me what CB to buy.

Breaker, breaker, good buddies - help me buy a CB off of this here intarweb thing... When I was in my younger days (early 90's), a few friends had CBs in their cars. It was the source of much fun and, in the pre-cell phone days, an easy way to stay connected. We'd also listen to the chatter on the police bands.
I'd like to get back into it, even if only for a lark. There are lots of models out there, but my requirements are pretty small. I'd like to be able to listen and talk, but also hear any other chatter that might be going on. Used is fine. Ebay is ok, too. This wouldn't be a car model - I telecommute now, so I'd set it by the window.
IIRC, this means I'd need a 'scanner' and a regular unit? Would any of this be usable if I'd want to make the leap into Ham radio?
10-65, out.
