Pets and municipal weed control

Dogs, cats, and herbicides. My town hires a contractor to spray the gutters for weed control. A truck comes along and hoses down the gutters with Milestone (aminopyralid). It's impractical to give notice to homeowners of application dates because the window of application is extremely weather dependent; therefore I have no idea when it's going to happen and end up blithely walking my dogs straight through freshly applied herbicide at every single street crossing, as we walk four miles nearly every day of the year. Obviously many other dogs and outdoor cats are affected as well. How does your municipality handle weed control? Are you given notice? Are there more environmentally friendly ways of preventing weeds in gutters? Supposedly this is a very safe herbicide but, you know, we've heard that before. I strongly prefer not to walk my dogs in it.

How can I find out where my cat's been going all day?

My usually very stay-at-home cat has recently taken to disappearing before I get up in the morning and coming home late in the afternoon. I think a neighbor may be feeding her because, besides the fact that my cat's always been a homebody, I feed her in the morning, so she would likely stay around to be fed unless she had an equally good reason to go elsewhere. When this started last week, she didn't have a collar, so conceivably someone could have thought she was homeless and tried to take her in. But after two days I put a collar on her, with an attached note to the effect of "please don't feed me or take me in", but she's still going off every morning. I miss her and worry that one day she won't return. How can I track her movements? [more inside]

Any pointers on coping with a sick cat by myself?

I asked a question about my cat a few weeks ago - he was fine then, but then got sick very soon after. We have both been through the wringer, and I'm having a very hard time assessing how his recovery is going because I've just been so sad and upset and can't tell if I'm over- or under-reacting to every move of his. (I'll try to keep the details short inside.) [more inside]

She has cats. I have allergies. Can/should we live together?

So perhaps I'm burying the lede, because I have other concerns than the cats, but we've been dating a little over 2 years and she'd like to move in. I have significant reservations about sharing my space generally but her two cats are the most conspicuous aspect I object to, due to allergies and general not-wanting-pets. [more inside]

Is this white stuff in the litter box from the litter or from my cat?

Last night I came home from a long weekend and when I scooped my cat's litter box, one of the clumps of litter had what looked like baking soda in it, but the litter doesn't have baking soda in it (World's Best, Original - not multi-cat). Then when I scooped it today, there was another clump with white powder. I've never seen this before, and my cat had a urinary blockage about three years ago, so I get nervous around litter box issues. But money is really tight and I'd prefer not to take him to the vet if I'm being a hypochondriac (but I absolutely will if it sounds like if I have reason to worry.) Here's a (cell phone) picture of the clump. [more inside]

What to Do With Feral Kittens & Mom (Brainstorm)

The feral cat we've been feeding somehow managed to keep three kittens alive during some very cold nights this spring. Now they're 6-7 weeks old, too young to trap and neuter. We love having them around but our near neighbor, an elderly man who is also our landlord's father, is afraid of them. Really afraid. He won't go into his garden now, which he loves, in fear of an "attack." We need to find a way to get them to a place where they can live out their lives, together if they want to be (we know the males leave the colony, don't know if any are). Now they're afraid of cages. Am I overreacting to my friends' values about future pets?

My younger friends are roommates and want to jointly adopt a kitten. When I asked some follow-up questions about who would be the real owner of the cat (since they'll likely not live together for the animal's entire lifespan) it seems that they assume they'll just give the cat up if neither wants to take it to the new home. I am, shall we say, not a fan of this plan. They both think I'm overreacting. They are also not very keen on simply fostering instead of adopting. What to do? [more inside]

Yet another cat naming question ...

We are about to adopt a gorgeous pair of young cats. They are 1yo, brother and sister, tabby and white, mainly white with tabby spots and blotches and stripey tails. She is smaller than him. They are rangy at the moment but will be indoor cats and will probably become "fine" and content with time. Quite lively but friendly. They have, erm, had kittens together already (the boy is now neutered and the girl gets done next week), so bonus points for incestuous brother-sister pairs (I am already mining Iris Murdoch's novels for some but they don't have great cat names).
