I'm moving to a new state (California to Montana). I'm couch-surfing at the moment, so my cats are staying with my folks in California until I find a permanent place to live. I'm trying to figure out whether hiring movers is feasible, or whether I should just go back for them myself. [more inside]
Does anyone have recommendations for a cat feeder for a very, very food motivated and intelligent cat? It needs to be basically impossible for her to break into. Ideally this cat feeder would also be able to dispense canned food. It's fine if it only dispenses 1-2 meals. This needs to be available in Canada. [more inside]
I recently bought one of those Tile things to find your lost keys, things, etc, and they do mention putting one on your pet's collar as a use-case. It's all bluetooth, so I assume it's only good for ~30ft or so away, but I can't find any reviews of it (or similar things) online. Has anyone ever used one with an outdoor cat? Does it work reliably? [more inside]
The title pretty much says it all. The last few litter box scoops we've bought have broken, which is getting a bit frustrating. Can you recommend any to us that can last? [more inside]
I adopted 3 cats from the local shelter on Saturday. One of them is deaf, and I'm realizing that I don't really know how to express disapproval for things like determinedly trying to lick my face off. Details (and pictures) under the cut. [more inside]
My 1.5 yr old cat will escalate grooming/playing with other cats into aggressive biting. What should I do? [more inside]
I am watching my co-worker's cat because she had to move to a place where you can''t have cats. We can't find the cat and I am afraid she escaped from the house. However no one saw her run out of the door and no doors were left open. We have a resident cat who likes to run out of the house so we are extra careful when we leave. I think the cat might be hiding but my boyfriend thinks that is unlikely because he looked for her ALL day. Have you ever lost a cat inside your house?
Part one: traveling with a kitten; Part two: your positive stories about introducing said kitten to adult cats; and Part three: does this kitten look like a Dennis or a Bud to you? [more inside]
Yes, another one of these questions. [more inside]
I live in Ontario. I was being sexually harassed by my male roommate ("Come on, share my bed with me"), so I left my apartment halfway through the month of October. I hired a petsitter from Kijiji.ca at the very last minute for $50/week. Now he/she/they will not return my cats, and I am very upset. [more inside]
How can I give my adult cat some payoff when he suckles fabric but never finds milk? [more inside]
I've heard that boarding cats away from home for a time will encourage them to become friendly toward each other when they return. Looking for whether that's true/common, how long to board and other particulars. [more inside]
I recently adopted a cat. He is infested with fleas. I asked the vet for suggestions and need to confirm if this combination of treatments is safe. [more inside]
My three cats are urinating all over my basement and the smell is terrible. How do I deal with the smell and correct this behavior? [more inside]
Hi, after the sudden and unexpected death of our beloved pet cat on Sunday, we've decided to adopt two kittens. We are finalists for the adoption and will meet them on Saturday. The kitten we are basing the adoption around is a white male shorthair. We are working on finding him a littermate or bonded kitten to come home with him. I want to name him Jon Snow after the Game of Thrones character because he is one of my favorite characters (also...winter is coming, people!). [more inside]
I returned from a three-day trip out of town yesterday to find both cats infested with fleas. This is our third round with fleas since late July/early August. I made a trip to Petco and applied Advantage to both cats. My question is, what else can I do to make sure the fleas don't come back this time? A few key details inside. [more inside]
We lost our indoor cat at around 1am this morning from our back yard in our quiet suburban neighborhood. It's getting cold outside, and we are worried about her. What can we do to find her? More details after the jump. [more inside]
A few years ago all the kibbles started mysteriously switching to the small round pellet shape. This is less than ideal since some cats will wolf down the kibble, completely unchewed, and then throw it up. This is essentially an industrywide phenomenon due to a study showing cats will eat 40% more of the pellet shape. What manufacturers have kept a cross or other larger shape that must be chewed? Can a young energetic kitty and an older mellow kitty make a good pair? [more inside]
I need to move to Austria to take care of my Mum. I am planning on going June/July next year. I have 3 cats which I do not want to live without. Is there a specific agency I go through to get them over there? It is a permanent move. Also, can anyone suggest a good, not terribly expensive, overseas moving service? Any answers will be greatly appreciated.
We're moving (maybe you remember from my previous 100 questions on this topic) to California from Chicago and taking our cat on the plane with us. This is a new experience for both my hubby and me. I've done a lot of Googling, I've read up on United's pet policy, and read through Flyer Talk, etc. so I think I get the basic concepts but I'm specifically confused about a few things. [more inside]
What books/activities/other resources will help me get past this horrible sadness. [more inside]
I got my cats this bed and this bed recently. I would like to find a combination of the two for the Ultimate Cat Bed--something with the small opening of the first combined with the wide opening of the second. Any recommendations? [more inside]
Yes, it's kitty food question #1,628. I'm wondering if any of the good quality cat foods mentioned in previous threads have gone south of late. (It's too bad that cats don't eat beans because I plate up a lot of them.) [more inside]
So I am about to adopt my first cat (specifically this one, yay Mefi!). I'm looking for a vet for regular wellness checks in my area (Emeryville, CA, near Ashby Bart) - the catch is that I'm reliant on public transport, and I don't have a ton of money. Suggestions? [more inside]
I recently got prescription cat food for my pet and it's been working fine at permitting him to have regular bowel movements without any diarrhea. Best of all, he now poops in the litter box like he is supposed to. The food provided to me is IAMS Intestine Plus for cats but it's fairly expensive. [more inside]
I'm looking for advice from the community on how to connect with one of our two recently adopted cats who's notoriously skittish. [more inside]
As I write this, a cat is sdddaf constantly mushi`ng her face into my hands and keyboard. I've known a fair number of cats. There seems to be this subset of them that suddenly get really aggressively snuggly. What gives? What can I do to help them feel less needy? [more inside]
Friends! This may be a bit of a stretch for this community but I need help naming a couple of kittens. Difficulty level: I don't know if I'm keeping both of them but I want names that work well together. [more inside]
I love wearing tights, but the ones I just bought are a magnet for cat hair. Have you found any that aren't? Does the amount of polyester in the mix make a difference?
The other day I happened to notice these little growths on my cat's carpal pads. The rest of her claws, including her dew claw are normal and I trim them regularly. For some reason, I either have not noticed these growths on her carpal pad or they're new. I've included a picture of each paw inside. [more inside]
Does such a thing exist, and if so, where can I buy it? Thanks.
I've been in the area a couple years now, and my vet experience for my cats has been less than satisfactory. And the sticker shock! I adore my cats, but damn. I am in the Arlington area, but am willing to drive into the surrounding suburbs. Thanks in advance.
Our contractor is about to begin building an addition on our house. (Yay!) However, we have two very sensitive indoors-only cats who get stressed out easily, and we're told the noise is going to be intense for about a month, and especially during the demolition phase. (Boo!) I welcome any and all ideas for reducing our cats' (and our own) stress for the duration of this long project, short of boarding them elsewhere. Thanks! [more inside]
I am working to become an adoption counselor with a local no-kill animal shelter. What are some innocuous yet revealing questions that may have worked for you in a similar type of situation? [more inside]
Moving from Austin to Minneapolis in a couple weeks. We're taking our three cats. Two of them are 9 and 10, the other is about 2. One of the cats travels well, one is whiny off and on, and the third is intolerable. Doing the vet thing to get sedatives costs way more than we can afford. What should we do? Any ideas? I was thinking about getting Feliway and catnip to help them chill out.
A young cat that I took in in in an emergency situation, expecting to be able to rehome her quickly, is turning out to be a skilled bird hunter, which is really stressing me out. The thing is, she doesn't kill them, just seems to incapacitate them so that they can't walk or fly. [more inside]
We just bought our first house. Yay! One of the bedrooms has been designated as a haven for our 3 kitties - a place for them to play and lounge, with litter boxes and food/water available as well so we can close the door if we need them to be contained inside for a period of time. I am looking for suggestions what we can do to make this room awesome for the cats (and for us, the people who have to clean up after our furkids and keep them entertained). [more inside]
I want to automate cat litter scooping, however, I do not want to frighten our cats or take away their sense of territory. Can these goals be reconciled? [more inside]
For several years my girlfriend's 5-year-old cat has been regularly pissing on soft surfaces, and it's getting worse. [more inside]

We have two adorable cats and an even more adorable 4-year-old son who we've just confirmed is allergic to cats. What now? [more inside]
My friend and I found two abandoned kittens when we walked her dog last week. We saved them from the street, but neither of us can keep them (she: single mom who can't afford two cats; me: in Hoboken, NJ and already have two cats). She's willing to foster, but can only do so for the rest of the week as she's leaving for six weeks a week from today. They're great - playful and affectionate with each other and they turn on their motors as soon as you pick them up. She got an offer to make them barn cats, but they seem too sweet and gentle for that. They've been to the vet and are about 12 weeks old. They're being spayed tomorrow and will soon be ready for a home. My friend called a local rescue organization, but they don't have any foster homes available. Does anyone have any experience with a good rescue near Merritt Island, FL?
Ok, I could have sworn I read this book multiple times when I was a kid, but nobody seems to remember it exists including my cat-loving, children's literature professor mom who gave it to me. I'll try to list every thing I can remember about it in the extended explanation. To summarize, it takes place in an Italian town where a young-fountain-making apprentice wants to make his own fountain so that all the stray cats around him will have some place to drink. As he is poor, he cobbles together the material from things he can find, and in the end I do believe he ends up making the fountain. My mom and the internet don't seem to remember this book, but I think it did exist. Maybe you guys will come up with something. [more inside]

I'm a new home owner who wants to keep my house as free of dust, allergens and cat smells as possible. What kind of air purification system should I get? [more inside]
Moving from a two bedroom house to a two bedroom apartment in late June with three cats. We need clever litterbox hacks for our furry friends! [more inside]
I periodically come across stray cats in my city, and I like to feed them. I've gotten into the habit of carrying around a can of cat food in my car for this purpose. My partner told me that he thinks the food inside the can might go bad from sitting in the car while the temperature/seasons change. Is this true? How can I figure out how long I can carry around the cat food without it going bad? (I could switch to carrying dry food, but that's less aromatic and thus less attractive to strays.)
