Pet-health experts & leather-dye experts - completely normal question

Lost our cat. Remaining cat also seems lost. Should we get him a pal?

We lost our beloved cat 9 days ago. Our remaining cat has been confused and sad, clearly needing a great deal of reassurance and wanting to be with us more of the time.We eventually plan to get him a new buddy. Should we get him a new buddy sooner, like this mont, or later, like 3-4 months from now? [more inside]

Looking for help with cat's perpetually scaly, cracked paw pads

My boyfriend's cat's paw pads are always extremely scaly and cracked, but it doesn't seem to bother him at all. Here's a picture to give you an idea of how bad. Has anyone ever seen this, and if so do you have any advice? Or is this just one of those weird pet things that probably isn't a big deal and you can't do anything about it anyway? [more inside]

Discouraging cat from pissing on sofa

Our lovely little cat-beast has taken to pissing on our sofa basically every morning, no matter how much we try to stop him, no matter how clean the litter box. We're using Febreeze to try and get rid of the smell, but we worry that a certain aroma remains, and that's what makes him go back there. Is there some strong-smelling but nontoxic-to-cats substance we could put on the sofa to make it appear less like a giant soft litter box?

Talk to me about flushable cat litters

We've got a single cat, in a fourth-floor walkup with the garbage room in the basement. It would be nice not to have to run to the basement every time I empty the litter box (and I'm not so thrilled with the idea of letting a few days' worth of cat poop accumulate in a bin before carrying it out to the trash). What is the situation with flushable cat litters? Are any of them worth using? Any downsides I should be aware of?

What will catnip do to my neighbourhood cats?

Our front yard (6ft x 20ft slate chippings) has become the neighbourhood litter tray. All the traditional solutions tried, I've started wondering about planting catnip. My thinking is that is the area is an area for happy stoner cats, it's less likely to be a litter tray. Unfortunately, I can't see anything on the internet that suggests an answer either way. Does anyone have any anecdotal evidence they'd care to throw my way?

Is this play-fighting or something more serious?

my kitty cats (see previous questions for photos) really are classic Frenemies. They sleep together, Crocket licks Binky's face and ears before they go to sleep , they run around together, sniff each other's bums and both sit watching birds and insects out the window.... so, they obviously love each right? My cat's been biting humans out of the blue

We adopted a cat a couple of months ago. He's about five, and in good health according to the vet. (He was surrendered to a local SPCA for financial reasons.) Starting about a month ago, he's started biting people. He'll get very close, his eyes will dilate, he'll extend his neck toward an arm or leg and he'll often let out a relatively long, complaining meow and then chomp down on the limb. It's scaring the shit out of me and my wife. [more inside]

Lasers- more effective than laying on hands?

My veterinarian has recently started using "healing lasers" as part of dental treatments, among other things. The information they provided said that the laser is used outside the animal's mouth, and it... somehow penetrates and reduces pain and inflammation? The poop is definitely in the box (er, raised bed), how do I get it out

What do I do about the cat poop in my raised beds if I don't want to get rid of the cats? I have a little feral/community cat colony in my (urban) backyard. They have chosen two of my raised beds as their toilet. Now that the snow has melted the smell is kicking in.
