I periodically come across stray cats in my city, and I like to feed them. I've gotten into the habit of carrying around a can of cat food in my car for this purpose. My partner told me that he thinks the food inside the can might go bad from sitting in the car while the temperature/seasons change. Is this true? How can I figure out how long I can carry around the cat food without it going bad? (I could switch to carrying dry food, but that's less aromatic and thus less attractive to strays.)

My feisty darling Banana had two grand mal seizures on Monday morning and has since had a complete neuro workup including MRI that have essentially ruled out everything except idiopathic epilepsy. He's been on phenobarbital since Monday evening - first by IV in the hospital, and then starting Tuesday night 15mg twice a day at home. And he is a sad little zombie. [more inside]
Sister cats, adopted from the shelter very young (~couple months)...are now around 3 years and thriving. Problem is they will randomly get very...agitated? Upset? Freaked out may be the best way to describe this. Not sure what to do or how to go about explaining it to vet without having to force pills down their little throats (this causes more trauma and anxiety!) Tedious details inside. [more inside]
We've recently bought a ScoopFree self cleaning litter box. It is wonderful but we didn't want to keep buying the disposable litter trays for $30 a go so we bought a Forever Litter Tray. Now we need to buy some crystal litter to use with it. [more inside]
It's been a couple years since this last question, so I figured it was worth a renewal. My two travel partners and I will be arriving in Kyoto this afternoon and I wanted to ping the hive mind for suggestions. [more inside]
I think I'm about to have to deal with the loss of a beloved pet cat. I am not sure how to best handle dealing with her remains. I want to keep them. Can anyone help me figure this out? [more inside]
I have two 10 year old, part Maine Coon cats(pic of Leo) who love fatty things and I'm wondering if it's a deficiency in their diet? [more inside]
Our beloved 18 year old kitty Skye was diagnosed with CRF 3&1/2 years ago. We were told at the time it was pretty bad and that he could have months or years left. We opted not to go with the sub q because he is so skittish already, I wasn't about to make his final time with us miserable. We changed his diet and it helped tremendously. He has his downs where we think it is the end, and then her perks up in a week and is back to normal. This last down was the worst and the shortest. [more inside]

We have 2 cats who are about 15 (we got them when they were 4), and for many years they were like our children. They have grown old and gross, and now that we have real children, it feels like they are keeping us from being able to enjoy our life in our house. More details inside. [more inside]
I live in a drafty old house and have recently winterized the windows using a kit from Home Depot. It works pretty well! But these bad cats really, really like to claw through the plastic. Is there a more cat-proof option?
I need to move my cats' litterbox. They are not going along with this plan. Advice, please? [more inside]
A dear friend of mine who lives far away has lost two of her three cats to sudden, upsetting illness, in the space of a week. She has implied that she's not interested in talking about it, which I can understand. [more inside]
Okay, sorry for this gross question I am about to lay on you. I clean my cats' litter box on a pretty regular basis, scooping it daily (okay, almost daily) and then washing it down when needed. It is large size. What I am finding is the cat claw scrapes go down to the base and it's like the cat pee seeps down into the actual plastic of the box and just makes the box permanently stinky. I tried litter liners and it was a disaster - they ripped them to shreds and it was just extra mess to clean up. Does there exist like a stainless steel litter box base or that material they make space ships out of or something?
Could anyone recommend a fabulous vet for cats in the SF Bay Area? [more inside]
After a five-month break (our sweet kitty died on Bastille Day), aerosolkid and I are getting a cat (my choice) and a kitten (his choice) the day after Christmas. I want to make sure that they'll each be receptive to the other before we bring them home. I've begun volunteering at the shelter where we'll go, so can spend some extended time with the cats that I like. I currently have my eyes on a particular cat; I put a kitten to his nose one time and he didn't care, but I suspect there's more that I should do. I know how to introduce cats once they're home, but I'd like to have an expectation of success before we get that far. If you've adopted two non-bonded cats at the same time, how did you make sure they'd get along?
Yet another "should I get another pet" question. I have a thirteen-year-old cat. 3 years ago, his longtime kitty companion died, and he was very, very sad. So we got him a new friend to play with, and everyone was happy. Except now my cat is getting old, and he doesn't have the energy to play with the youngster anymore. This has resulted in one being irritated, and the other being confused and irritating (not to mention fat). I think the solution is another, younger cat to keep little brother company, but for some reason the idea of three cats seems weird to me. [more inside]
My husband, who grew up with Lionel trains, would like to get a new set for the holidays. We have a 1 bedroom apartment, so we're not doing an entire set up. We have no kids, so it doesn't have to be Thomas, but I'm at a loss between O-Gauge and G-Gauge and all the different options! Does anyone have advice? [more inside]

My brother and sister-in law are about to have their first human kidlet. They also have two cats (both rescued young-adult Siamese mixes) that they absolutely adore. Our dog had tape worms several weeks ago. Presumably she got them from raw pork fat she got out of the garbage overnight. We gave her medication as prescribed by the vet and they cleared up quickly. We just noticed several small worms sticking to the area around our cat's butt. [more inside]
Howdy! We're relocating from New York City to London at the end of this year, and of course we're taking our cat Olive with us. What we're having a little bit of a hard time with is figuring out just *how* to bring her, and we're hoping you can help us. [more inside]

I want to buy a fake cat for someone who loves cats but can't have one because she lives in a nursing home. Here's what she's looking for (cribbed from a newspaper column she writes): "I just long to hold a cat and enjoy their softness and purring. So, this is my solution: I’m going to look in Walmart for a stuffed cat that talks and meows and purrs. It must be softer than soft and I’ll call him Sammy." This seems like it would be purr... well, you know. But it's out of stock. Are there any MeFites out there who can advise me on the best fake cat for grown-ups?
Sleepytime Tea gets my cat high, I found out accidentally after dropping a tea bag. I mean, catnip high. Any thoughts as to whether it would be dangerous to cats? Is this a just say no to drugs situation or a pass the pipe situation?
I have two six-month-old kittens. I am worried I'm not giving them enough food. Advice? [more inside]
My 13yo cat has a head wound on her forehead by her eye that she will not stop itching. It started out as 3 small scratches (like our other cat had kicked her in the head or similar) but every time it scabs over she itches the scab off and so it has expanded into a hole in her head that is now encroaching on her eye. We've tried putting cat hydrocortisone and lidocaine cream around it, covering it up (can't find anything bandage-like that'll stay on her head), tying a sock on her itching foot (she yanks it off) and putting her in the cone of shame (she itches around it. Somehow). I'd like to avoid a vet visit if possible because they terrify her and I am poor.
I don't expect an animal shelter to smell like fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies and flower arrangements, but I think I may have hit on a poorly run or at least oversaturated facility. How do I tell? Details inside. [more inside]
I adopted two stray kittens just under a year ago. I am mildly allergic and planned to keep them temporarily, but grew quite attached. I am constantly on the road for work take them around from hotel to hotel with me, which is not ideal. On top of that, my permanent living situation is changing and I will be living with someone with severe cat allergies. I need to find a home for these two as soon as possible. I have exhausted my possible friends and family options. I really would like them to be able to stay together, as they are quite good buddies. I don't like the idea of giving them to a shelter, though I am beginning to see it may be the only option here. If it's useful, I am going back and fourth between Scranton, PA and Pittsburgh, PA right now, in case anyone has suggestions that are location specific. Does anyone have advice about facilities or other ways that I might try to find them a home? Tobias and Tzipora and I thank you.
Some neighbor dropped off this flowering plant (picture 1, picture 2), and I'm trying to figure out what it is, and (BONUS QUESTION) whether it's toxic to the cats. Little four-petalled yellow flowers, thick waxy-feeling leaves, roughly a foot tall in its pot. Okay thanks for reading, for your time here's a nice pic of Thunder Perfect Cat on cat tranquilizers
Should I add a third cat to our humble home? I've read this and this from previous questions but our situation is slightly different. I'd like advice from other folks to help me make a decision. [more inside]
I want to know if I am crazy or not, because the last thing my life needs right now is More Bad Stuff. I am going through a very tough time lately (due to infertility and a dying parent). I also own two (neurotic) cats. I think I need a dog because an outpouring of goodness and unconditional happiness is sorely needed. But I'm trying to get knocked up, both my husband & I work full time, and I've never owned a dog before. Snowflake details inside, plus bonus question: if we get this dog, should it be a puppy or adult? From a breeder or a shelter? [more inside]
I have four cats. I just found a live flea on one of them. How can indoor cats (they *never* go outside) get fleas? [more inside]
We have decided it's important for our cats to make the transition from outdoor cats to indoor cats - they're doing OK with it, but they want to play for hours, and we don't have the attention span to dangle a string in front of them all day. Given that we now live in the future, I assume there must exist some good robotic mice, birds or insects or something. Anyone have any good recommendations? [more inside]
We have cats and, unfortunately, love them very much. We keep their nails clipped and have lots of scratching posts, but they still sink their little claws into everything. Are there fabrics, either for rugs or couches, that you've found work better with cat claws? I was told that things like microsuede provide less purchase for their little pointy claws -- is this true? What fabrics should we avoid?
I have a cat that I love, and I'm seeing a woman who is mildly allergic to cats. Any allergy sufferers have any concrete suggestions about ways to reduce the impact of cat dander/fur? [more inside]
What should we do about a friendly stray cat that hangs out on our porch, aggressively tries to come inside, and generally drives our own cat crazy? We've tried not feeding her and chasing her off, and we've tried regularly feeding her far from the house, and now we're not sure what to do next. [more inside]
We have two cats that are growing older at the same time we're become less tolerant of their constant crying for food. I would like to feed them with 3 hockey puck style containers that each open at some random time within 24 hours of being closed and placed randomly around the house. [more inside]
Mango (pic here of course, the smaller, less white one) has taken to peeing inside the lobby door inside the front door. He started when we had a workman in - we think the workman might smell strongly of his own, elderly cats. I am calm and understanding with him, not angry, I try not to reinforce it, we have had him checked and done many things (see list below) but it's still happening and it's not great. Have you successfully stopped your feline companion weeing in an inappropriate place and how did you do it? [more inside]
I recently relocated to Santa Cruz, CA because I was offered a job. I brought my cat but now I am having a difficult time finding a place to live. I have a stable job and am a stable person but it seems like all the housing is being snapped up by students. I don't want to have to send my cat elsewhere just so I can live in this city :(. I currently have two foster kittens that I'm returning to the Humane Society soon. They will then advertise these kittens for adoption. In order to help them find their "forever family", the Society has asked us to write descriptions of the kittens. They haven't provided any guidelines, just to "write about their personality etc". I recently got a really wonderful cat! While my old cheap-o vacuum did just fine before getting the cat, it is now seriously out if its league. I clearly need to replace the vacuum with something more powerful, but the prices of vacuum cleaners scare me (I am a student and so money is tight). Any suggestions on vacuums that will get the job done with pet hair but not totally break the bank?
