What is the comic/cartoon connection?

My neighbors' outdoor cats, whom I catsit occasionally and interact with regularly, have names that I cannot quite parse, even though my neighbor has repeated them for me on several occasions. Both cats are male. One cat is "Dillon" or "Dylan." The other cat's name sounds like "Sits" or "Zits" or "Sitz." When I looked confused at some point, my neighbor said the names were "from a comic" or "from a cartoon." [more inside]

Should I interfere when my cats are fighting?

I have two eight month old kittens. Mostly they get along great - they snuggle and sleep together, and they play-fight sometimes, though not as frequently as they used to. Sometimes this lil guy, Res, harasses this lil girl, Essie, and I don't know if, or when, I should step in. [more inside]

How awful is it to give a cat fluid injections?

My aged (but still quite lively!) kitty has had kidney disease as long as we've known him. We've switched him to K/D prescription cat food and we've done everything we can think of to convince the stubborn little dope to drink more water, but on our last vet visit the vet told us that unless he shows signs of improvement soon, we may need to start giving him regular fluid injections. I'm hoping for a little more info about the process, and our options... [more inside]

Foolproof way to feed baby kittens?

I've got three new baby kittens with no mother, and I need to feed them. I don't have access to any good pet stores or veterinary clinics, but I do have lactose-free baby formula and a plastic syringe with the needle removed, which I've been using to feed them so far. But is there a foolproof method of holding them or something to get them to drink from it? I can usually get them to drink, but only about half of the amount recommended. More details inside. Pet insurance on indoor cats - worth it?

People with pet insurance on their cats. Have the benefits ever outweighed the costs? It seems very expensive to me. I've not had it before as it wasn't around when I got dear old Dot. Bearing in mind these are fit 3 yo cats with no pre-existing conditions who were well cared for in previous home and will be living indoors only. The only people who have had good use out of their pet insurance who I know are lady with cat who was in a road accident and had lots of ops and MRIs and lady with 2 rescue dogs who have had joint and allergy problems. Why is my cat having diarrhea?

My cat is pooping on himself. At first, we thought it was because his fur is too long, so we trimmed him. But now we think it's actually diarrhea (and even the blobs are soft) so it's probably more than just a kitten-doesn't-know-how-to-clean-himself problem. [more inside]

Am I overreacting to my friends' values about future pets?

My younger friends are roommates and want to jointly adopt a kitten. When I asked some follow-up questions about who would be the real owner of the cat (since they'll likely not live together for the animal's entire lifespan) it seems that they assume they'll just give the cat up if neither wants to take it to the new home. I am, shall we say, not a fan of this plan. They both think I'm overreacting. They are also not very keen on simply fostering instead of adopting. What to do? [more inside]

Yet another cat naming question ...

We are about to adopt a gorgeous pair of young cats. They are 1yo, brother and sister, tabby and white, mainly white with tabby spots and blotches and stripey tails. She is smaller than him. They are rangy at the moment but will be indoor cats and will probably become "fine" and content with time. Quite lively but friendly. They have, erm, had kittens together already (the boy is now neutered and the girl gets done next week), so bonus points for incestuous brother-sister pairs (I am already mining Iris Murdoch's novels for some but they don't have great cat names). Cabin cats or cargo cats?

My wife and I are moving across the country in a few months with our furballs, Steve and Lola. We're going to fly with them, but I'm not sure if they would be better off with us in the cabin or in cargo. The trip is unavoidably going to involve two flights, the first one will be about 6 to 6:30 hours in length, the second will be 2 to 2:30 hours. The layover between them could be as short as an hour. So total travel time, including getting to/from the airports will probably be around 12-13 hours. [more inside]

It's yo' cat / It's yo' problem!

CatLivingFilter: One of my roommate's two cats has become very attached to me, probably because my roommate (by his own admission) inherited the cat from an ex relationship and never really liked it that much. That's cool--I like cats, and cats like me. What I don't like is that the cat has become so attached that it will yell inconsolably outside my door, scratch at my door, and sometimes even bash into my door in despair of not being in my room. This has become a major sleep disrupting problem for me. What can I reasonably expect my roommate to do to respond to this situation? [more inside]

How do cats choose where to take their naps?

My cats both seem to choose different places to sleep on different days. I can't really figure out how/why the choose where they do. One day in the closet with a window, the other on the bed when the blinds are open, sometimes on the couch near the window, sometimes on the couch as far as possible from the windows, sometimes on the living room couch, sometimes on the family room couch, and then somedays in the no-window basement where it is completely dark. Do you know what affects the pattern? Except maybe light/warmth?

Cat cord chewing.

I need solutions for a cat that chomps cords.
