With a new neighborhood comes new neighborhood cats, and one of our indoor cats is freaking out. What do we do about this?

Among narratives about visitations by the
"Grey" aliens, are there any that talk about what cats do during the alien encounter? Do they just chill all cool-style? Do they FREAK OUT. Do they meow a lot or do they hiss or do they go hide someplace? Do they even try to bite the aliens (would be v. brave, imo). For the purposes of this question, let's allow both ostensibly fictional narratives and ostensibly real ones.

How do I cat-proof a bookshelf and desk? My cats like to climb on my bookshelf and desk and knock things off of them, sometimes for fun and sometimes to get my attention. I would like them to stop doing this.

OK, I know this is the perennial AskMe "My cat does this crazy thing" question, and that the answer will be the eternal "because cats are weird", but I want to find out if anyone else's cat does this. When my spouse is laughing loudly, for instance (but not exclusively) in response to being tickled, my
cat will launch himself at him and attempt to bite him (fortunately, it's always been through clothes). This has happened three times. It was not a playful bite, but rather a full-on chomp. The cat is very sweet at all other times, if occasionally a bit jumpy. Has anyone else seen this behavior, or have any idea what's going on, or how to make the cat less reactive to loud laughter?

Our three cats are brazenly unfazed when we squirt them with water guns. They jump up on the counter tops, we squirt them, they scamper away, and then five minutes later they're back up there. What are other ways to make them fear the humans' surfaces?

Our recently adopted, very sweet, very clingy male kitten is showing some signs of aggressive behaviour. Is this typical of intact males? Will his behaviour change for the better after he's neutered or should I be worried?

My girlfriend's cat has an incredible knack for destroying my furniture. I've got an opportunity to replace my uncomfortable fabric couch with a farily nice, comfortable, microsuede couch for cheap. I'd like to avoid having this piece of furniture become yet another unintended scratching post. What's worked for you?

Cat Filter. We just lost an elderly cat, leaving us with only one. Potato Chip is 4, spayed, playful, and large-and-in-charge. (Really, she's like 20 lbs.) She used to bully the older cat--eat her food, ambush her out of the litter box, etc.--and doesn't seem to notice that she's gone now. I like to have 2 cats around and intend to get another. My question is, how can I minimize the bullying and maximize the peace of our happy home? I'm thinking a kitten, since a kitten would naturally be submissive to an adult. Does that sound right? Should this kitten be male or female? (Neutering will be done before we bring new kitty home, if necessary.) Rambunctious or shy and retiring? It's really a crapshoot, I know, but all opinions are welcomed.
