Should we go to an emergency vet tonight, or can it wait until tomorrow? [more inside]
My friends’ cat died yesterday. How can I help them? [more inside]
I have a cat. My girlfriend is allergic to cats (previously). I'd like to get a Roomba, since we've noticed that regular vacuuming with my HEPA-filter vacuum helps a lot. The theory here is "set robot to vacuum at 9am, come home at 7pm to cleaner apartment (with dust settled, since the roomba ran at 9am, not 7pm). [more inside]
I recently lost my cat, and I would like to go to the local humane society to adopt another one. I would like to find a balance between selecting a cat that would both best fit the requirements of our household and one that would probably a lower chance of being adopted. Can you help me identify traits to look for? [more inside]
I need to buy a christmas sweater for someone with one very important detail. [more inside]
my cat is reverse-sniffing...short, half-second bursts maybe once or twice an hour. this is a new development, i.e. she hasn't always done this and I wonder if anyone out there can let me know what this is about. Google search is not helpful. [more inside]
We put our 20-year-old cat to sleep at home last night. I had read about what to expect, but did not anticipate her struggling so desperately throughout the procedure. Now my mind keeps going back to those awful moments over and over. I’m wondering if anyone here has had a similar experience, or just has some thoughts on how to process this. [more inside]
My cat had something on his fur, near his left rear thigh, that looked like a slug. It was about an inch long and 3-5mm wide, black, and shiny. He is a fraidy cat who will not tolerate being touched. He only just tolerates playing chases with a piece of string, so I spent some time with him this morning doing just that and trying to take a picture. I was not able to get a picture that was clear enough. He actually washed around whatever it was, but only once, and he didn't dislodge it in the process. We tried to catch him and failed. He got outside. Since he has so many hangups it is possible that he won't come back and likely that he won't trust us for another six months if he does. He only knows a few words, but "vet" is one of them and he has a very strong reaction to that one, so the effects of stuffing him into a pet carrier can only be imagined, even if we had any hope of accomplishing that now. So: what external feline parasite looks like a slug, is about an inch long and lurks on the fur near the thigh, and what do we do about it in the unlikely event that we get the chance?
My new hobby is gilding things and now the cat has a big gold leaf stuck to her eyeball. How bad is it for the cat? Will it just go away by itself?
We recently discovered that my cat has been peeing consistently on the carpeted floor behind a bookcase in our rental apartment. The bookcase is ruined, but what can we do about the carpet to keep our security deposit bleeding to a minimum? [more inside]
YANMC (You are not my cat), but why does my 2 y/o cat attack my legs? Bare legs = Wide, crazy kitty eyes and sideways CHOMP right into my calf. This has been going on for about a month. And I mean MY legs- we've tried to see if she will go after my husband's and she won't! This is not a serious problem; I'm just curious. I'm an experienced cat owner but this is funny and baffling. My partner is facing some big life changes, including a new job and loss of a pet, and I'm wondering what small ways I can support him and make life easier for him. [more inside]
Howdy! We're relocating from New York City to London at the end of this year, and of course we're taking our cat Olive with us. What we're having a little bit of a hard time with is figuring out just *how* to bring her, and we're hoping you can help us. [more inside]
My roommate and I have just adopted this cat, an 8 year old male, and are hoping to get ideas on what to rename him. He's currently known as Fantik (apparently this means candy wrapper in Russian), and comes from a previous household where they couldn't keep him because of allergies. [more inside]
So my three male kitties got neutered yesterday. They came home and spent most of the evening and night snarling and growling, keeping their distance from each other as much as possible in my tiny studio apartment. It makes sense - they were all in pain and shaking off the anesthesia. But today, everyone is feeling better: eating, playing, and acting like normal miscreants for the most part. Except that they seem to have picked up the very behaviors neutering is supposed to discourage. Aaaand in a few days, two of them are going to be traveling for 16 hours together in a dog kennel... Help me get rid of an unwanted visitor cat and calm my freaked-out felines in the meantime. [more inside]
My cat seems to have developed a sudden fear of... moving dark things? Taking my black jacket off or putting it on sends her running for the bed for hours. And I just reached for my purse on the couch, and the motion of the big black purse sent her scurrying too. No idea what could have triggered this. How do I get her relax again? [more inside]
How can I help my lady cat calm down and stop over-grooming during a difficult time? [more inside]
This didn't used to be a problem, but my cat vigorously attacks the carpeting. I have cardboard scratching boards all over, which she has been happy to use in the past, especially where she likes to scratch. She doesn't care, she scratches right next to them, even after I spray her with water and yell 'no!', and pet her when she does actually use the boards. [more inside]

Hello sage MeFites! Due to the usual vagaries of life (moving, grad school, etc), my usual wonderful cat-sitters are no longer quite so readily available to coddle the whims of my neurotic, adorable kitteh (SLYT of her torrid love affair with my humidifier). Do any Chicago MeFites know of a reliable, friendly cat-sitter who would be available for a north side kitty in November? [more inside]
Sorry for a kitty adoption question, but I need the power of the hivemind. I'm trying to decide if I should adopt this particular cat, or look for another one! Need to make a choice quick - snowflake issues beneath the fold. [more inside]
I adopted a new cat today and need help naming him. There's history here, so please check inside for details and pictures of existing cat and new cat. [more inside]
A female detective had two cats, which she'd named Onanoff and Offanon. Some variation in the spelling is likely. This was Sci Fi radio program in the 80's. Anybody remember her, or her kitties? Super bonus points for a link to the archives, if it exists. Google won't even discuss it with me.

My cat has been walking in counterclockwise circles pretty much constantly for an hour and a half. He seems a little agitated but basically okay, not shaking or crying or hyperventilating or anything like that. An hour ago he ate his normal dinner, circling between bites. From time to time he lies down, but even lying down he keeps looking over his shoulder to the left, then after a minute or so he rolls over (always in the same direction) and resumes circling. This kitty is 9 1/2 years old and was diagnosed with diabetes about a year and a half ago; I give him insulin shots twice daily. I thought this circling business might be hypoglycemia and mixed some syrup in with his food, but it doesn't seem to have helped much if at all. Google suggests everything from vestibular disease to an abscessed tooth to a stroke. What's going on? What should I do? Can I wait until my vet reopens at 8:00 tomorrow morning, or should I try to find an all-night animal hospital? [more inside]
Do I need to take my recently-acquired formerly-stray kitten to the vet for a check-up or anything? She had fleas but we washed them off and put a flea collar on her, and they haven't returned. Other than that she seems in good health, and I'm wondering if there's any reason to take her to a vet or not. (I can get her spayed and vaccinated for really cheap, but, a vet visit costs a lot more...)
Cats are deliberately avoiding the litter boxes: how do we get them to stop? (Obligatory photos and snowflake details inside.) [more inside]
My 13yo cat has a head wound on her forehead by her eye that she will not stop itching. It started out as 3 small scratches (like our other cat had kicked her in the head or similar) but every time it scabs over she itches the scab off and so it has expanded into a hole in her head that is now encroaching on her eye. We've tried putting cat hydrocortisone and lidocaine cream around it, covering it up (can't find anything bandage-like that'll stay on her head), tying a sock on her itching foot (she yanks it off) and putting her in the cone of shame (she itches around it. Somehow). I'd like to avoid a vet visit if possible because they terrify her and I am poor.
You are not a vet (but maybe you play one on TV). Inconclusive cat symptoms: what could they mean? [more inside]
I volunteer with a rescue group that fosters and adopts out tiny dogs. I am looking for someplace that will custom-print either a collar or a pet bandana with the group's logo, so it's similar to the"adopt me" signs that many adoption groups use. Likely I'm going to want less than a few hundred, which seems to be below the radar for most commercial outfits. Any suggestions for a company that might do that without costing an absolute fortune?

My 10 year old cat Leo has colitis and occasionally has episodes where he kind of stiffens up, probably in pain, but it usually passes in 10 minutes or so and sometimes he throws up, but then he's back to normal. Last night he was like this and threw up after dinner, but then he's just been really lethargic ever since, almost like he's drugged or something. [more inside]
Is there any way to deworm cats without visiting the vet? [more inside]
An adorable stray pregnant cat has been hanging around my house for the last week or two. She seems to be quite young, and is friendly and tame - definitely not feral. I don't believe she has an owner, as I see her wandering the streets constantly, especially at night. She looks relatively healthy, though very skinny. I had suspected she was pregnant, but last night was the first time I could really confirm it. I have no idea how far along she is. I fed her last night, so I'm sure she'll be back. I love cats, but I have an older female cat who does not get along with other animals, so taking her in is not an option. When she comes back, what would be the next best step? Catch her and call a cat rescue? Catch her and take her to a vet? And when I do catch her, I wouldn't bring her in the house, so could I keep her in an enclosed area in the garage until I find a place to take her in? We live in Southern CA, so it does not get cold (and where we are, it doesn't get too hot either).
We're moving from a place with a screened porch to an apartment with a balcony. Our cats love (love, love, love) sitting out on our screened porch and basking in the sun. They only get to do it supervised during the daytime, but it is their favorite thing, EVER. The new place has no particularly obvious way to screen the balcony and nothing that we can really secure screens. Any suggestions? [more inside]
Our 20 year old cat is having a really hard time with some functional issues in her golden years. We're running out of ideas. Help? [more inside]
Bridget [pics to follow] has been a little bit clumsy lately (missing jumps, etc) and she also went deaf fairly quickly over the course of several weeks. Still, she's been basically spry and happy - she's oldish at approximately 12 to 14 years old, but her weight is fine and she checks out fine. This morning I woke her up and she has been very unsteady on her rear feet. She fell from standing, and she's having trouble walking without falling over. We can see it's making her upset but when we pick her up she's happy and chases treats with her paws. But the falling is really scaring the crap out of me. Does anyone know what might be going on or if there's anything we can do for her? Really worried right now - thank you in advance for any advice.
So we just adopted this big girl from the Humane Society 2 days ago. We don't know anything about her past. She was abandoned there a week ago. She's HUGE. Big-boned, long, and FAT. She has 26 toes and weighs 25 pounds. She is thought to be about 4 years old.She sees our vet on Friday, and we expect she will be put on a reducing plan, but she will always be quite large. She's quick to purr, loves scritches on the butt, between the ears, and under the chin. We thought we had come up with the perfect name: Butter Buddha (or Buddha Belly), but have since gotten several excellent ideas--Refrigerator Purry, and Mrs. Butterworth. We are reconsidering her name. But we don't want to be too hasty in case another more perfect name is out there. Ideas?
We've just noticed one of our kitties (22 days old) has red eyes. His pupils, to be precise, are red. Should I be worried? [more inside]

I am breaking my lurker status by asking a "name my kitty" question. Will you please help me name my new adopted shelter kitty? She's about 2 years old, and very sweet and playful. I would like a girl name. I know all about the "cats that look like Hitler" sites, but I'm not into exploiting that cute little mark on her nose (even though I was considering naming her "Eva" for a while). I'm open to just about anything. And kitty thanks you in advance, she will enjoy no longer being called "New Kitty." Oh yeah... here's the photo!
Pumpernickel is having UTI issues and needs to go on a strict wet-food-only diet. After buying more brands and flavors than I can count, I think we've found some he likes. BUT, he never eats enough of the wet stuff and at this point supplementing with dry needs to stop. How do I help this cat! [more inside]
A friend of mine would like to start a cat blog (maybe with social media add-ons - Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat etc.) which would center around pretending to be her pet cat writing the blog. Beyond this , what would be some fun things for the blog to specialize in? This is just for fun (neither she nor the cat is not seeking fame and fortune through this project; it might be for a public audience though). She turned to me for suggestions but I'm tapped out. What do you guys think? Not too time-consuming or complicated, ideally. Something she could do tens of thousands of times without getting bored (I am trying to quietly encourage my friend's transition into full-blown Cat Lady status, so please help.)
I have a 6 month old Bengal male cat with persistent diarrhea. We narrowed it down through testing to tritrichomonas foetus and gave him 30mg/kg dose of Ronidazole for two weeks. The diarrhea went away while he was on Ronidazole, then returned within 48 hours after going off the Ronidazole. I am taking a sample back for testing (which is really tricky with tritrichomonas foetus) on Monday and see what the vet says. But I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this. [more inside]

My friend has this woven throw blanket with cats on it that she's had since she was a little kid (ie 1994 or so). It's getting sort of threadbare now and I would really like to find the exact same blanket and give it to her for Christmas this year, but I have no idea what kind of blanket it is nor do I know who might have made hers. I figure it's either super rare, or crazy ubiquitous, but "cat woven throw" yields weird results on Google. Better leads needed, please!
