How to help a cranky cat get used to the dog?

(Pet harmony filter) A little over 3 months ago, we adopted Phoebe, an 18-month old poodle/bichon cross. She's a fantastic dog, very well behaved, perfectly lovable and playful and awesome in every way, and we adore her. We also have 4 cats, 3 of which have settled down and seem to have gotten used her. But not Phil. Phil hates Phoebe with white-hot kitty hate. And it's breaking my heart. [more inside]

Getting a kitten for a gift - what else do I need?

I've decided to adopt a kitten for my fiance as a Christmas gift this year. She's an absolute animal lover, and she has been wanting to get a kitten for a while now (her cat of 15 years died this summer). I'm going to arrange the adoption and then have her pick the kitten out the day after the holiday. However, I'm going to arrange an assortment of kitten necessities for her to open on Christmas morning. Never having had a kitten, what do I need?

Do I need to use two tubes of antibiotic eye ointment?

The pediatrician says my two-week-old baby has a potential eye infection-- her left eye isn't draining properly yet. The pediatrician prescribed erythromycin ointment. Coincidentally, about three weeks ago, our cat was prescribed erythromycin for her eye infection, which is now long cleared. I still have about four-fifths of a tube. Is there any reason that I shouldn't use the cat's ointment on the baby? It seems like a waste to open another tube of the stuff.

Ive recently moved house and now my cat seems bored. What can i do to keep him entertained?

Around 4 weeks ago I moved house and took my cat with me. He seemed to take the move well he wasnt scared and settled in quite quickly. Ive installed a cat flap and for the past 2 weeks hes been using it if only to do business outside. I work 9 - 5 ish so the cat is on his own all day but when i come home the cat behaves very strangely. He will follow me round sometimes dashing back and forth trying to play sometimes just shadowing me and ocasionally meowing a bit. Im guessing hes bored and i have a feeling its because the area the new house is in only has 1 cat in the area. Im not sure. So im wondering what i could do to make him less bored. I was thinking maybee get another cat? or am i jumping the gun a bit is this normal behavour from a cat that has had to move? he does seem very happy

My cat's a nightmare (washing, pooping, moving socks, flicking letterboxes...). Any suggestions?

I've got a problematic cat. She's a stray. I've had her for 8 years now, and we estimate she was about 4 months old when she decided to join me. There are 4 main problems: the persistent washing (till she bleeds); the crapping on the floor; the moving of socks and other small items around the house; and the general neediness. The vet is out of ideas. I have this naive hope that there will be a solution (ah, your cat has "Needywashingcrappersock syndrome, ms handee"). But I'm running out of patience (and cash). So it is time to Ask Metafilter. Anyone got any ideas? [more inside]

You can lead a cat to water...

I have two energetic one-year-old cats who love to knock over their water dish. I've tried several different types (at first they had a standard ceramic dish, into which they'd drop their stuffed toys until the toys absorbed all of the water (and got extremely gross), so I switched to a water-cooler-style dish, with a jug on top that fills to a dish in the bottom. That worked for a few weeks, but now the just play with it until it tips over, leaving my rug wet and them thirsty. What can I do to keep them from doing this? Is there a better (but still inexpensive) cat-watering system?
