My therapist suggested that I get an emotional support cat. I super want a cat, miss living with cats, my housemates think it's a good idea and are happy about a cat living with us. I live in San Francisco; I'm worried that my landlord will raise the rent by lots when it's time to renew the lease/force us to leave or something. Is this a supported fear? [more inside]

Please share your experiences dealing with your cat's diagnosis of ocular (eye) melanosis or melanoma. Melanosis is the spreading of eye freckles on the iris, whereas melanoma is a tumor on the iris. These separate conditions can appear similar. Please share how your vet has diagnosed and treated either condition. [more inside]
I'm writing a short story in which one of the characters has a cat named Lucky. For contextual reasons, it would make sense if the cat was named Lucky in Spanish. I know the Spanish word for "lucky" is "afortunada", but would this make sense as a pet's name? Do people in Spanish-speaking countries name their animals Lucky, and if so, would those animals be named Afortunada or another word?
So, we are getting a cat. I have never owned a cat before, and the last time my partner did was a decade ago when he lived with his parents. I feel like I have a handle on how much this will cost but pretty much nothing else. I need, like, some really basic information. (A book? Is there a cats for dummies?) [more inside]
So this was me, but unfortunately I don't think I will have to worry about his long term companion. My surviving cat was *also* diagnosed with a different cancer. His was operable, and the healing process is okay, but he doesn't want to eat. I have 48 hours to get him eating normally before we go to a feeding tube. You are not my vet. My vet sees him so often he is officially sick of both of us, but maybe you have been successful in a similar case? Details inside. [more inside]
There has got to be a Japanese word/term (from anime maybe) for a girl/cat shape-shifter, right? [more inside]
The spouse and I both remember a comedian, probably in the 90s, making a joke about someone (probably Steven Adler) getting kicked out of Guns n Roses - it was just something like, "What do you have to do to get kicked out of Guns n Roses, freebase a cat?" [more inside]
My cat is very playful and meows for attention a lot. I’m wondering if maybe he would like a playmate but I'm afraid that he might hate it. [more inside]

I like clocks. And soon I'll be moving into a new place and would like to get three stylish clocks to put in various locations of my place. I want clocks that aren't exactly run-of-the-mill. Think unusual, conversation-starting clocks such as the Kit-Cat Klock from the 1930s (probably one of the three clocks will be a vintage black or red Kit-Cat Klock). I'm mostly looking for wall clocks and both new and vintage clock recommendations are welcome.
Hi We recently did a diarrhea pcr panel and results that the cat has positive coronavirus which I hear is super common. I am stressed out about it since I hear that it can mutate to FIP which is fatal! My cats are 1 year and 2 months and healthy other than this blood result. Any thoughts or advice?

I am visiting my mother for a couple weeks; I'd like to take my adorable little Kokopelli with me. I'll be driving and it's about 9 hours. I want to make sure that (a) my kitty is safe and comfortable during the trip there and back, and that (b) he can have a nice visit once we arrive. [more inside]
One of our cats is a habitual out-of-litterbox toilet user. Due to this issue, we've had to put him in the garage at night when we can't keep an eye on him. However, we recently purchased a new car and plan to begin putting it in the garage - but we're not sure how to keep that cat - plus possible one other - from urinating on the car. Can anyone think of some solutions? Right now all I can think of is a cover or tarp.

We would love to rent out our condo in Vancouver—or participate in some kind of home exchange—but are reluctant to leave our cat with strangers. (And local cat sitters are quite expensive.) Is there a site, or a filter on an existing site, to find others in a similar situation? [more inside]

So tomorrow we will be bringing home our new kitten Matthew Meowdock. I was wondering if any Metafilter crafters could help my wife out with a sewing problem she's having? Here's her question: "I make felt animals, usually of the jointed variety. I draw my own patterns and sew by hand, and it's been going fine up till now, but the last two creatures I made have both had a weird bunching at the neck. I've tried altering the width of the necks, the gussets, basting in advance, what-all, but I can't figure out what the problem is... [more inside]

I has new kitteh! Yay! She's a rescue, about 2 years old, a small spayed female tuxedo beauty in good health, with a shy temperament. I have not had a cat in years. I am sure I am asking a question to which there are many answers and about which MeFites have strong opinions, but here goes: What is the current "state of the art" answer on the best quality and healthiest commercially prepared food for an adult, indoor, younger cat? So I usually feed the cats dry and wet food. Well I use a cat feeder and I think it works but does not fill up the bowl. It delivers food on the back of the bowl but does not fill up the bowl. Well now my husband and I are gone for the night and I can't help it but sit here and worry that they are starving and not getting enough food. I will be back tommorow but I left today this morning and I didn't expect I will be gone for the night. They just have this feeder that is supposed to throw down food by gravity. Like I say I think it works but they need to get it out from the back with the paw. Will they do that?

My cat just got into a fight with a neighbor's cat. I broke up the fight, but my cat was spooked and wouldn't come to me, so I haven't had a chance to look her over. I am guessing she will need to go to the vet to get any bites/scratches attended to. How long after being scratched/bitten can I wait to go into the vet? It is getting later in the day, my regular vet is closing soon, and I may have to wait until morning to see them. Can I wait (providing it is minor injuries), or should I find an emergency vet?
A year ago I asked this question about grain free cat food and have been feeding Bunny Cat Blue Buffalo Freedom dry food since then. Now she has bladder crystals and the vet wants me to change her diet. :( Help! [more inside]

My cat has a few small, uninfected scratches on bridge of its nose. I have washed gently with warm water and a cloth, but am wondering if anyone can recommend something simple I can apply to promote healing? Could be an over the counter ointment made for the purpose or something I have at home like olive oil, jojoba oil, or aloe, but I don't really want anything medicated. YANMvet but, cat parents, what have you used?

I'm fostering a cat, but she's been here since April so this is turning into a long-term project. She wasn't feral, but had had a hard outdoor life for awhile and was somewhat tense, and part of my deal has been to calm her down and make her more adoptable. On the whole it's been working and Sophie is about 95% there. But... [more inside]
I was having a play session with my cats and they all seemed to be enjoying it. Afterwards I was giving them treats and when I went to give them to Mamma she just stared at them and looked dazed and out of it. Usually she would gobble them up immediately. It really freaked me out! [more inside]
