possible kitten ringworm

I adopted a 10 week old kitten from the aspca on 10/31. He went for a booster shot today and the vet said he might have a touch of ringworm. One of his toes lost a little fur. It has been that way for two days and he was acting normally and I knew he was going to the vet so I let it go. The vet gave me a sulphur-y bath thing and clipped some of his fur to test. They explained to put the collar on him so he can't lick the solution but didn't say to do anything else. Is the bath all I need to do? [more inside]

Cat acting starving, but has gained weight. What ELSE can I do?

My "new" cat, Tiny, has gained weight after becoming an indoors-only cat. The vet thinks she should lose about a pound. I have cut down her food just a bit, hoping that slowly it would help take off the weight. She acts like she is miserable, to the point of trying to eat things cats don't typically eat, like saltines (caught in the act!). Help me figure out what else I can do. [more inside]

Should I try metronomic chemotherapy for my cat?

You are not my vet. However, I have seen a regular vet and a veterinary oncologist and now have some difficult choices to make and I would be very grateful for first hand accounts from people who have tried metronomic chemotherapy with their pet (especially cats) or other people's pets (if you're a vet or if you're close to someone who has gone through this sort of thing before). I am seeking advice and real-life experiences to supplement any advice regular vets or oncologists may give me. [more inside]

Unscented supermarket cat litter (plus bonus points for cat name)

The good news is that we are getting a cat, but it will be this weekend! He's a young male tiger cat stray. The current caretakers say he likes unscented cat litter (will not go in the box if litter is scented). Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent supermarket litter that is clumping and unscented. I don't have time to get fancy or specialty litter with the timetable involved. [more inside]

Adding a new Kitty into the mix - help!

I know there are many cat lovers here, and I am seeking some advice. About two years ago, I adopted two adult female cats (Mona and Lola) from a foster home. Recently, I adopted another kitten (Morty) when his human parents split up. We introduced them slowly, first keeping Morty behind a door away from Mona and Lola, then gradually giving him access to different rooms of the house. The issue is that Morty loves to 'play' often by chasing and pouncing on Lola. I feel very protective of Lola and worry and that she feels unsafe. More details below the fold. [more inside]

ALCO Pet carriers. Is there a modern equivalent?

My mom has had three green ALCO brand pet carriers for probably 30-40 years. They look like this and this. We still use them. They are awesome because they open from the biggest side of the box allowing you to easily shove a big, fat, ornery cat in there and close the mesh door. All modern carriers that I've seen have their door at the front, the smallest side of the box, and it's a total pain to get an animal in and out of there. Well, they certainly don't make ALCO carriers any more, and ALCO probably hasn't even existed for decades. Meanwhile, our carriers are in various stages of falling apart. I would like to know if any company makes a similar style, side-loading pet-carrier today, and, if so, where I can find it. [more inside]

Big cat decisions

Mouthful of cat medicine

I was fighting with the cat this morning trying to get him to take clindamyacin hydrochloride which had been proscribed after dental surgery. Anyway, he was wriggling all around and the dropper squirted everywhere and not quite sure how it happened but I ended up with a mouthful of cat medicine. I rinsed my mouth out a few times. I figured this was probably not toxic since regular clindamycin is a people drug, but do I need to call anyone to confirm this?

How to transition a cat to free feed

So since we got Molly, she's been a joy. But we're still trying to settle into a feeding regimen. We're currently on a morning feed (wet), an after work feed (wet), and a right before bed snack (high quality dry). It's fine, but it would be great if it could be a bit more flexible or less frequent. I wonder if we could put her on a free feed system like my friend does with her two cats, but I'm scared of overfeeding her. Does anyone have advice on how we could try transitioning to that sort of thing? I'm not sure about doing it gradually because I feel like that would just make her eat more and more. But if we just go straight to an always full bowl, will she just gorge herself all of a sudden and make herself sick?
