Easy, super fast way to make a positive face cast for a kid?

I want to make some foam superhero masks for my kids, that follow the face pretty closely, but don't have to be super accurate. I don't want to go too complicated, so most special effects tutorials are out, besides they (8 and 4 years old) aren't inclined to sitting still while I tinker. [more inside]

Why did movie stars become so fit?

I was watching the original 1979 Alien today and it struck me how the actors are all of a fairly average fitness level. In the opening shot, as everyone is coming out of stasis on the Nostromo, the men are mostly shirtless, but none of them have the requisite six-pack abs and bulging chest that I feel certain would be there if this movie was made today. Why? [more inside]

Preserving a butterfly for eternity

So, I found a mummified, perfectly preserved butterfly on my window sill. Its beautiful and I want to preserve it and look at it and may be show it off to people. See if I can make a brooch or something out of it and give it as a gift to people close to me. But I cant do any of this as the butterfly is quite fragile. How can I preserve this butterfly forever ... or if that's not possible, a very long time? [more inside]

Custom metal casting - Need help with the summoning ritual

Which websites are best for posting casting calls for Seattle actors.

Yes, I can Google, and I see there are a lot of websites for casting calls out there. Some of the more polished ones charge for making posts. I don't mind paying to post an ad. But which websites have a lot of actors looking at them and are likely to get results? My production is in Seattle. [more inside]

How do I get my foot in the door at a small production company in NY?

I have two dream jobs: one is working as a producer at a small independent production company in NY, the other is being a casting director. I don't want to be some big hollywood producer, but I'd love to work at a smaller media company. Whenever I've managed to get a foot in the door somewhere, I've done well. There are two problems. One is I have no idea how to land an entry level position in such a company. The other is that I'm starting out late at the age of 29. [more inside]

What method should I use to recreate a small wooden horse tail?

I have these antique wooden horses, some of which are completely missing their tails due to breaking off and subsequent loss. I would like to recreate 4 extra tails using some method but am getting overwhelmed by the possibilities. I am not afraid to try creating a mold then casting them somehow, but I would like this to be easy and cost effective (<$30 total) since I only need to do 4. I am doing this purely for aesthetic reasons and the material does not have to be terribly durable and Obviously I do not expect this to be wooden. The tails are approximately 2" x 1" and are originally wood, painted black.

3D Zodiac character items needed

Where can I find good quality stamped or molded _3D_ reproductions of zodiac signs (the fish, goat, scales, etc - not the written characters) of a "classical" appearance, between 1" and 2" diameter? I found several places selling a zodiac candy mold, which might work, but I'm not sure I like the style of the images. I'm wanting to use whatever I find as a pattern for sand-casting metal to make adornments for a big armillary sphere I'm building for my garden, so it doesn't really matter what they're made out of. Tin, plastic, wood, paper - whatever. If they're too flimsy I can make castings of them and use those as patterns. Suggestions would be appreciated. :-)

A ring....

OK, I've searched all over the internet, MeFi and tons of blogs. I've learned a lot, but I haven't found what I'm looking for. I want to carve a simple ring design for my girlfriend, out of jewelers wax, then send it to a professional silversmith and have it cast. Now I could do it myself, but I neither have the space nor the equipment to do it properly. So yes I have seen and read just about every tutorial about DIY casting. So...anyone out there know where I could find an actual silversmith, only found one, they want a minimum of 25 pieces....

How does one become a casting director? It doesn't seem like there would be classes in film school on becoming a casting director, so I'm curious as to what professional course one would take to attain this position.
