Like alot of people over a certain age, I have a real fondness and nostalgia for making mixtapes (for myself at this point, since so few people have anything to play them on). Of course, I've used iTunes and Spotify and put tracks on memory cards etc etc but it's not the same thing at all. I'm looking to get something tangible that I can record and archive mixes to pull out and play whenever. I'm looking at Minidisc stuff on ebay, since I always liked them, but would be recording much of the material to MDs (lossy) from mp3s, AAC etc as well as higher rez formats. Would that sound ultra terrible? Should I just go back to cassettes? [more inside]

I just bought a 2000 VW Golf, which has a cassette player. Can anyone recommend a convertor to play music from my iPhone? The best review I've seen is for the Sony, but there is still a lot of criticism. Please recommend the best option, whether it is the Sony, or another. Thank you.
I'm looking for the title of a audio-cassette album I owned sometime in the 1990s, which had the themes of various Star Trek movies and, particularly, tracks of sound effects of the ships warping that I believe were unique to the tape (as opposed to having been taken from the films). [more inside]
I need to buy a tape recorder to do interviews with people in punk bands. I'd love if it was also loud enough at playback to function as an extremely crummy tape player so I can transcribe the tapes without headphones or listen to cassettes in my room (this magically started working again, but it's only hooked up in my living room). I have a few cassette tapes that survived third class mail from Ohio to Sierra Leone and back in the early seventies, and then have been pretty much left alone for the last 40 years. We have been digitizing them lately and on two of them the end of the tape has detached itself from the spool. I need someone who knows this stuff backwards and forwards to reattach them and/or digitize the content for us. I remember fixing cassette tapes myself back when they were the preferred media, but I also remember having about a 5% failure rate. Way too high for this operation. Company recommendations (US preferably) would be gladly received.
I'm putting together a stereo system that only needs to be able to play cassette tapes and vinyl records, because yes I am that much of a hipster. I have my speakers and turntable, and I just picked up a 1970s receiver with integrated cassette deck...which stopped working almost immediately. How do you go about buying something with many breakable, moving parts that stopped being manufactured with any quality in the 1980s? Should I replace my receiver with just a receiver and get a standalone tape deck? Where do you even buy a standalone tape deck? [more inside]
Assuming a level of graphics competence at "low, but very willing to learn", what's the easiest method of creating inserts for audio cassettes? Level of quality around "punk/hardcore/straight edge" on the sliding scale. Preference slightly skewed to a 4 or 5 panel card, tools available are MS Office products, Photoshop Elements and of course GIMP. Access to printers and copiers, willing to lay out double digits for a tool, click-and-drag type template, or assistance. Thoughts/advice/help?
Hey, music geeks! Can someone please explain the recent retro-fetishization of the cassette tape? When and where did this trend begin? [more inside]
Back in the mid to late 80s my dad had this casset tape series of stories that I absolutely loved. Not kids stories though. They were narrative with the person / people guiding you through the experience. The part that sticks in my mind the most is that there was this wall with a hole in it. The man tells that when he stuck his finger in he couldn't pull it back out, he could only go further in. So he kept digging and pushing himself into the wall ... and thats all I remember but it just amazed me. If anyone knows what this is I'd be eternally grateful.
I've been wracking my brains trying to remember the identity of this female folk singer from the 1980s-1990s. She made at least a few albums targeted at kids, incorporating many environmental themes. And I can't for the life of me remember even enough to do a proper Google search. Gah! [more inside]
Storing paper/cardboard inserts from cassettes and CDs -- is this a solved problem? I'm going to have ~100 cassette inserts and 200-300 CD inserts. I'm wondering if there's some kind of pockety book thing that will make it easy to refer to these in the future and to enjoy looking at them casually/nostalgically. [more inside]

Looking for a super cheesy old cassette tape recording with the "spirit of the wind" chant on it and other, similar things. It was produced by one woman, who may have appeared on the cover. I think each side was as short as 15-20 minutes. Another track was something like "the call of the s/he wolf", where her voice looped over itself. [more inside]

I have some old cassette tapes of African music made by my in-laws who were missionaries the in the 1960s. A friend transferred the reel-to-reel recordings to cassette. Backwards. My in-laws didn't play the tapes until much later, and the original reels were overwritten by then. Any ideas on the easiest way to restore the music?

Audio Cassette Tapes. VHS tapes. 1/4" Reel-to-Reel tapes. If it's magnetic and stringy and housed in plastic casing, I have it. Quite a few boxes. A few shrink wrapped, some new in box, many more used. Besides craigslist -> free, does anyone have a use for my deprecated media? [more inside]

I've got a large collection of audio books on cassette that I'd like to digitize. I'd like to find a way to do this at faster than real-time speed (a good number of these audio books are 12 hours or more in length. Any suggestions for a simple, cheap method of doing this? Thanks!
I commute and run to books on tape. Every so often, I will get a spate of too fast, high pitched Alvin Chipmunk playback. Flip the tape to side B at the same point- no problem. Flip it back- Alvin. Change tape player- same thing, so it seems not to be the machines. At worst this can go on for an entire side. A solution would be welcome (slapping tape firmly does not help, nor does rewinding), but mostly I'm wondering, what gives here?
I'm trying to convert cassette tapes to MP3s using MusicReplay software. This involves use of an amplifier. I don't know what an amplifier is, if my stereo has one, and if I've hooked it up right. For whatever reason, it's not working. Help, please. [MI] [more inside]

Has anyone used/known anyone who has used the PlusDeck? It's a device for putting sounds from cassette tapes onto your computer. I want to do this primarily as a sampling of sounds into a sound-editing program, and possibly as a way to record entire songs onto the computer. Any reviews? Any idea of the quality? I'm clueless here.
