How feasible is it to replace a car stereo yourself (in a '01 Nissan)?

My wife and I just purchased her mother's old 2001 Nissan Pathfinder. The stereo it has is tape deck (!) which technically works and a CD player that doesn't. It has no aux input, which is unfortunately all we actually want. [more inside]

How to connect my phone to my 2005 Prius -- no audio jack

I have a 2005 Prius, a model that does not have an audio jack or bluetooth. I'd like to connect my phone (a Google Nexus 5) to my car stereo but can't see how I can do it, short of totally rewiring the dashboard, which seems like a bad idea to me. I'm looking for ideas for how I can achieve this. I'm not an audiophile, but I'd like to find a way to do it that doesn't make the sound quality awful. Perhaps the simplest thing would be for me to just buy a new car stereo and have it installed? Or is there something else that will solve this problem? Note: I'm not particularly well-informed on things technical, but I'm really good at following directions.

Why does my car stereo display text differently in day and night modes?

I admit up front this is an odd question, and it won't kill me if I never get an authoritative answer, but it's been bugging me. My car's stereo has an LCD display that gives the artist's name in fairly large letters and the track title below that in smaller letters. It can only display so many letters of course, and so it has to truncate most names and titles. But it truncates text differently in its daytime and nighttime modes. Why does it do that? Help converting audible .aax files for use on jump drive in car

Recently, I am finding myself with a significant amount of drive time. I have many audio books I have downloaded from amazon which use the audible proprietary .aax file. They play in iTunes but I need to put them on a jump drive so that my MicroSoft sync system in my car will recognize them and allow me to listen. I could care less about the DRM, sharing or any of that business. I just want to be able to use the files outside of my Mac. They are too long to burn to a CD I have searched the web with no satisfaction. Any answers, oh wise mefi?

CD's not playing properly in my car?

When I burn a CD, some songs that sound fine in iTunes on my computer will inexplicably have between 3-20 seconds of 'silence' at the beginning, thus causing my car's CD player to skip them if I don't fast forward to the actual music...WTF? (do my best to give some Tech Specs inside!) [more inside]

I don't know how to google for the car stereo features I'm looking for

I want to buy a new car stereo, but have no idea how to google for the features I'm looking for. What I really want is a double din stereo that has a usb port on the front where I can plug in my iphone 5 and play it through the stereo. Now comes the hard part, I want to control the iphone from the iphone. Not through the stereo interface. In otherwords, I want to use the USB port as an Aux out. [more inside]

Help me stop things from flying out of a storage slot in my car.

I recently installed a new stereo in my car. It's a single DIN stereo in a double DIN slot, so I now have a storage slot right above the stereo. However, it's made of a hard, slick plastic and anytime I turn the car or brake, whatever is in there can fly out. Does anyone have any ideas for a material or something I could put in there to provide a "grippy" or rubber-type surface that won't let stuff slip out? Amazon links or widely available products would be great. Thanks in advance.

Are there any mom-friendly mp3 players &/or car adapter kits?

My mom has a long commute, so I'm thinking it would be great to get her an mp3 player for the car. I will be setting it up, but it should be easy for her to use. She is more used to VCR buttons than click wheels and cord-squeezing, so iPod-style interfaces are out. Does anyone know of a reliable mp3 player or car adapter kit that will fit the bill? iPhone 3gs car stereo recommendation?

Anyone know of an aftermaket car stereo head unit that will play nicely with the iPhone 3gs? I looked at the previous question related to this, but didn't see any specific model recs...various google searches and Crutchfield have led me to believe that the 3rd gen iPhones are having charging issues with some (or all?) models of aftermarket stereos. I'd love to hear if anyone has any first hand experience lately with buying a new stereo for use with a newer iPhone. I probably would spend up to $400 for something cool. Thanks in advance.
