Swapping a car's stereo head unit: I would really like to replace my car's ailing Blaupunkt CD player with a more modern head unit, ideally one with a front aux-in for my iPhone. Before I embarked on this I thought it would (should!) be as simple as popping out the old HU, slotting the new one in and simply reconnecting the connector block. [more inside]

I hook my Ipod to my car stereo using an FM transmitter. Before setting out I'd like to choose a frequency that's not going to compete with local radio stations en-route. Is there a simple list of frequencies likely to be safe from interference? Alternatively has anybody done yet built some kind mash-up website that would give me a frequency for a given journey? I am in the UK but would be interested if this has been done anywhere. [more inside]

Can a CD damage a player? I'm not talking about a really dirty or greasy CD, but an OK-looking used CD with a scratch or some dirt I didn't notice? I hate to put used CDs in my car player (the last one broke during the first play of a good-looking used CD, but it may have just worn out), but don't know if I'm being careful or just nuts.

The factory-installed stereo in my car has stopped playing CDs, and my commute is fairly long, so this is essentially unacceptable. I've looked into getting it repaired, but the whole stereo'll have to be sent away for weeks, and it'll end up costing a bunch. But I've yet to find an add-on in-dash stereo for $200 or less that isn't terribly ugly. [more inside]

My car stereo was recently stolen. Since all I used it for was to route my mp3 player through the RCA in's, and since I've been kicking myself to start doing some DIY electronics projects, I'd like to make my own amp rather then buy a new stereo. Does anyone know how to program the Mercedes audio (COMMAND) system so that the radio volume does not automatically adjust itself according to (the car's perceived sense of) background noise. I expect it is a series of codes that can be input through the radio.

I have an iPod and a truck with a crappy factory stereo. I have tried 3 different FM transmitters and I'm giving up on using them to play the iPod through the car stereo. If possible, I want to avoid buying a new stereo that has aux-in. It's a big expenses and invites theft. Can I add aux-in to my existing stereo? I've heard that car stereo places will do this, wiring a headphone-jack cable to your seat/dashboard. Is that true? How do they go about it? And how would I "tune it in" after such an installation?

Anybody know how to get into the dashboard of my Hyundai Tiburon? I am getting an aux adapter cable to plug into the back of Pioneer head unit, but poking around doesn't show any easy way to get the dash off. It might be there are some screws on the front of the head unit that will release it without taking apart the car.

What's a good tape adapter for use in my car? I'm using it to listen to my Rio Karma MP3 player. My second adapter is dying, and I need a new one. Both times, the cable seemed to wear out where it meets the plug into the MP3 player. How can I avoid that?

Recently bought a car and the radio plays CDs. The panel says "CD/CD-R", but the manual had a big sticker across the cover saying "using non-original, recorded discs may damage this radio" etc. Is this some ass-covering copyright related legal thingie, or is it true that a CD I burn at home could damage the player?

I am in the market for a new car stereo in-dash receiver, and I was wondering what the best method of buying one would be, and where the best places on the Web to purchase might be? I only want to purchase an in-dash receiver with MP3 capability (no pre-amps, etc.), but I'm also interested in a system that I can plug a portable MP3 player into if necessary. I am looking to spend under $250 total for a receiver.
