I'm overwhelmed with choices. Help me buy another car. [more inside]
I am going to be moving to a new city and for the first time will be keeping my car parked on the street 24/7. This is unavoidable. Are there any suggestions y'all have for keeping my car safe beyond the usual (park under streetlight, keep valuables out)? Perhaps some way of making it so it can't be started if broken into?
I was just given a 2004 Ford Focus. I have a clean driving record, am 39, and haven't been insured for 12 years. Any estimates on what tabs, registration, and insurance is going to cost?
This seems to be changing somewhat these days. I see a lot of models these days that shut them off, but still every day I get messages from an admin at work telling people that their lights are on in the parking lot. This has been killing batteries for nearly a century now. Is there a good reason for what seems to be a design flaw?
I'm interested in a fuel efficient, reliable, modern, fun to drive car. Ideally >$22-25k. Doesn't need to be fancy. [more inside]
I take my great dane everywhere except for the grocery store. I left her in the car for ten minutes tops, came back to a mean note citing animal abuse. What should I do? [more inside]
How do I stop people from breaking my car windows? [more inside]
I will be living in a city that requires a car for the first time and I'm kind of lost on how to approach this. Help? [more inside]
I am in the process of buying a new car and I think I have it narrowed down to a 2016 Mazda3 or a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek. Manual either way. [more inside]
Two upcoming road trips for the holidays plus one young toddler who could make it all pretty miserable. Please share any tricks for keeping the little guy busy in the car. [more inside]
My son wants to be "The King" from the movie Cars. I can't find any pre-made costumes for this guy. I'm not crafty. How? [more inside]
This is what I'm talking about, but MUCH older. It uses a motor to belt drive a 10ft vertical screw, which in turn chain drives another screw on the other side. A ~2600lb car was left on a lift like this , raised to the top for the better part of a year. Can this damage the lift-screw? [more inside]
I need to get a new car tomorrow. I am looking for something that is cheap, highly reliable, and fuel-efficient. Right now I’m stuck trying to decide between the Honda Fit and the Toyota Corolla, but will also eagerly consider suggestions for cars I haven’t thought of. Any and all anecdata is welcome. I've never had a fun-to-drive car, and after selling my gas-guzzling FJ Cruiser and driving an equally thirsty F150 for a while (a free loaner), I've decided to buy a fast, fun, but also fairly practical car in the $30,000 range. Anyone done the same? [more inside]
Please convince me to buy one of these two convertibles. [more inside]
I don't have time to go out on test-drives right now, but I'm stuck on the idea of owning a minivan - tell me what it's like if you own one. [more inside]
The dealership says the repair done by a local shop was done incorrectly, which they must repair to their standards before proceeding. Local shop denies they did it wrong. I need an operational car. Who's ultimately on the hook for all this work? [more inside]
I received an email from my Kia dealership today saying that it's time for my "next regularly scheduled maintenance visit." It has been three months since I bought the car (a 2015 Soul), and the owner's manual states that the first recommended maintenance visit should be at 6 months or 12,000 km, whichever comes first (and I'm nowhere near that number). There are no signs of anything being wrong with the car, and I've been regularly checking fluid levels, tire pressure, etc. Can I just ignore this email? [more inside]
What's the best method of extricating yourself from a parallel parking spot when you're pointed downhill? [more inside]
I have an automatic Ford Focus ZX3 from 2003. Yesterday, a friend who really knows cars taught me how to change the oil. We also rotated the tires and filled them to spec (34 psi as indicated on the door). When I left, two strange things happened: my right back tail light was out, and more importantly: my brakes were not responsive. [more inside]
Recently bought a used 2013 car, black in color. It has a lot of cleaning/swirl marks, especially on the hood (no doubt from repeated sub-par cleaning by the previous owner). Can people recommend a service or shop that knows what to do to remove the micro scratches or at least improve this condition, and can do it well, at a reasonable price, in the Los Angeles area (preferrably either City of Industry, Hacienda Heights, or Pasadena)? My wife and I are renting an apartment with two parking spots. It is adjacent to another apartment with two spots, but the people there always cram three cars (one of which is always covered with a tarp) into the space, which means that typically one of the cars is halfway onto our spot, which always means the cars are packed tightly together. Which job would be better for someone who would like to keep their sanity: working as a car salesperson or working at a retail chain store? [more inside]
I found out today that my 2001 Subaru Forester may need a new catalytic converter, which all told is probably going to run me something like $1000. I already did this in 2013. Is it time to sell this car, or do I stick with the wisdom that you just keep repairing until you can't repair anymore? [more inside]
I was sort of proud of myself for replacing the spark plugs and wires in my 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan... until I drove it down the street and discovered the the brake pedal is rock hard and it's very hard to stop the think unless I virtually stand on the brake pedal. [more inside]
I just spent a few weeks in Britain where I rented a Toyota Verso, which is an example of a common vehicle style in Europe known as "5+2", meaning it's a five seater with an optional extra two seats in the luggage compartment (they fold away if you need more luggage space). [more inside]
It is probably time to replace our current car and we are looking at used, 2011 model year Nissan Leaf cars. Are there risks that we are overlooking? The ones we have noted are below. [more inside]
If you only had $5000 for a used vehicle, would you buy a RAV4, CRV, or Lexus RX? [more inside]
I do have a bill of sale -- is it as simple as showing proof at the local SOS branch? Located in Michigan. [more inside]
I live in NYC and haven't owned a car for a number of years now. However, I still drive and am pretty risk averse, so I'm wondering if it would be worth it to get non-owner car insurance of some sort. [more inside]
So some wonderful individual in a parking lot has christened my new car with its first scrape. Photo here. Is it sufficiently serious/deep that I should get it repainted immediately to avoid rusting issues? And if so, is it at all feasible to attempt a patch job myself? The internet at large is inconclusive on both counts.
I'm in my 30s and finally learning to drive. My wife drives, but doesn't own a car, and we think it might make sense to buy a cheap-ish vehicle for me to practice on and for occasional trips etc. We are thinking of getting something cheap, under $2K. My question is: what the heck do I look for? [more inside]
We're acquiring a 18-year-old Mazda Protoge. Although it's been barely used — about 35,000 miles — for obvious reasons I'm having it checked out. Can anybody recommend a good mechanic in the Cincinnati area (preferably around Blue Ash)?
My partner owns a 2010 Mini Cooper S. He loves the car, but doesn't want to drop big bucks every time he needs an oil change. Are Minis so special that he can only go to the dealership or a specific import mechanic? Or can he venture to Valvoline? [more inside]
'99 Civic Four-Door. 101k miles. $2k in repairs over the past year. Now needs new O2 sensors and brake lines, coming to $850 or so. Should I stay or should I go? Snowflake details inside. [more inside]
WWII fighters had little icons / emblems reflecting each enemy "kill". It seems like there should be an equivalent to stick on my bike for each collision with a car that I survive. But I can't work out a good google query. Do such things exist? [more inside]

My friend lives in California. Her car is in New York. She would like to sell this car. Assuming no trusted intermediaries are available in New York, and travel to New York is not an option right now, how might she go about doing this? [more inside]
Hi there. Everyone. I was hoping you all could help me with a question. It's time to sell my beloved 2005 LE (82K miles, good condition, new tires) and I wonder if it's worth doing a few things to help with the sale: It needs new bumper inserts, 1 new hubcap and has some scratches. If you were selling, would you make these fixes: is it worth it? Worth detailing, as well? Many thanks for any thoughts or ideas, CC
So I'm looking for a new car, and lucked into a 2007 Corolla that has only about 40K miles, is reasonably priced at $7.5K, has no rust (a big deal in Maine) and nothing sinister in its past. EXCEPT. In the course of my Carfaxing, I noticed it's subject (as of mid-June) to this terrifying recall. [more inside]
We are planning to buy a Mazda CX-5 in the near future. What kind of a price should we be looking to get, in southern Ontario? [more inside]
I've had a couple dead battery incidents (left the lights on, etc), so I decided to start looking for some jumper cables or something for the inevitable "next time" this sort of thing happens... and I was wondering -- are the smallish portable devices that connect via the cigarette lighter a good option? [more inside]
My wife and I are in the process of buying a new car for the first time. So far things have proceeded fairly smoothly, but I just wanted to be clear on how the steps should proceed as we enter the end game. [more inside]
I struggle with anxiety and ocd and this can make it hard sometimes for me to tell the difference between safe and overly cautious driving. An outside perspective would be extremely helpful. And yes, I am receiving treatment for the aforementioned issues. [more inside]
I like discovering and reading about [old-ish but not too old] cars. Thing is, I seem to have very odd, particular tastes and I can't find a magazine that really suits it. Does anyone have any suggestions for magazines (paper or electronic) to subscribe to? [more inside]
I have a 2003 VW Passat with no aux in jack. I have been using a cassette adapter to get audio from my phone, but the tape deck has stopped working. (It beeps and says Tape error.) I have tried replacing the cassette adapter but the same thing happens, so I know it is the player. [more inside]
I've been thinking about buying a used EV - maybe a Nissan Leaf. I have a very small garage which I use for storage. There is power in there. 1) How much does it cost to install a charging station? 2) Can I park in my driveway and run a power cable to my car for charging? I'm talking about six or ten feet.
I'm selling almost everything I own so I can fit everything that's left into my car and travel for a while. The inside of my car can get volcanically hot at times, and I'm worried about storing my MacBook and iPad there. What can I do to keep them as cool as possible? Buy a cooler they'll fit in? Do I need to worry about condensation in that case? Any ideas would be very welcome -- thanks!
