I recently moved from California to Colorado, then acquired a new car. Meanwhile, my California registration on the old car expired. I want to sell the old car in Colorado, but it has no current registration and was never registered in this state. How can I take people on test drives? Just risk it? Is signing over the California title sufficient, then it's their job to get the car registered? Headache city, any advice is much appreciated.
Selling my car (in California); am I getting screwed? [more inside]
Went to get my smog test done today. I almost passed it. The problem was that my engine is running a TINY bit too rich. There were more hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide coming out of my car's tailpipe than C.A.R.B. would have liked. The guy that was working at the smog test place was nice enough not to red flag my car for not having my pre-cat. [more inside]
29 year old UK resident without a driver's license and I've just been offered a six month job swap in California from later this year. How do I best go about procuring a license in the UK and then a car in the US? [more inside]
What's the best 1-2 yr old 4WD-capable car? Best for us means: fuel economy, reliability, non-behemoth-SUV-ness, aesthetic and reasonable cost (<$25k). Also: any knowledge about Subaru Outbacks and SoCal 4WD dealers. [more inside]
Visiting San Diego this weekend: do we need a rental car, and is there anything secret and great near Seaworld that we should see? (esp. good coffeeshops for hanging around in?) [more inside]
How hard/expensive is it likely to be to get a ten-year-old Jeep to pass California emissions standards? [more inside]
How do I mount a front license plate on my Scion XB? I got a fixit ticket for having only a rear plate, but there's no holes to screw on a front plate. [more inside]
I have a car that has been sitting parked for 6 months in Nashville, TN and the tags have expired. I will be going this week to drive it to my new place in San Jose, CA. I know that I will have to pay a few hundred bucks to register it in CA when I get there and would like to avoid paying to register for a full year in TN when I only need valid pates for a few days. I've done some searching on the TN website and can't find any information if there is any sort of temporary tag (even 10 days is more than enough) that would get me through. Does anyone have experience with this? Any ideas on what my options might be?
Can someone recommend a good, trustworthy, American-car auto mechanic, preferably near my work in Berkeley/Emeryville?
