We have very high ceilings in our apartment and can get a tall tree, but we would like to avoid renting a truck and I don't think any of our nearby friends have the type of vehicle that would be better. If we must, we will further investigate those options or delivery or whatever, but first I want to rule out using my own car. I've never transported anything on my own roof and I have no rack but I know trees get home this way all the time. I'm happy to go nuts tying it down as long as we're being safe. I know there's a weight limit listed for my car. What's the practical/legal length limit and what is it based on (roof, car length)?

My girlfriend was amazed that my sweatpants
have cargo pockets. She bemoans the fact that women's sweatpants usually have zero or fewer pockets. She would love a pair like mine in a more feminine cut. I'd like to find some to give her at Christmas. They will mostly be used as loungewear so I don't think I want to go the "fashion sweats" route that cost upwards of $80, but at the same time I'm sure she will wear them out occasionally when running errands so I don't want them poorly made. I think this style
is close to what she likes, but with more pockets.
Features she desires: POCKETS, no elastic ankles, prefer no logos/names, warm - prefer a thicker material than the thin jersey type. She is more on the petite side if that matters for selection.
I am in the US (Wisconsin) and can order online or buy brick and mortar. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd like to find a newish, reliable cargo van with under 100,000 miles, good gas mileage (at least 15+ city, 19+ highway), and a high top. The first two are strongly preferred, the high top could go either way I suppose. My budget is under $18K. [more inside]

My daughter bikes to school on a 24" kids mountain bike. She needs a cargo rack for her bike to carry her backpack. The only cargo racks I can find are for adults. They attach to the frame in pre-drilled holes beneath the seat. Kids racks do not have these holes. Anyone figured out how to attach the front supports of a bike cargo rack on a kids bike?

Where can I find a comprehensive list of all the ports in the United States that are capable of receiving an international cargo shipment that will need to be cleared through US customs? I know that this includes seaports, but I think that it also includes "dry ports" and "intermodal hubs."

Pelican-question: I need to transport some heavy equipment in medium-sized Pelican cases. The default soft gray pick-and-pluck foam is too soft and compressible for this purpose. I'm looking for a source to buy sheets or blocks of a very dense black foam that can be cut to my custom shapes with a hot wire knife. [more inside]

Where to start looking for rail cargo rates? I need to move about a shipping container worth of stuff from one side of the USA to the other. (DC to Fan Francisco). I have been told several times that rail is the cheapest, but I can't find much information about how to do it.

I need some new men's cargo shorts. I used to get these
Woolrich shorts, except they had a drawstring. I want the drawstring. I need the drawstring. I love the drawstring.
I also want a short inseam (6"). Long shorts that come to my knees make me feel like I'm 5 years old.
Tried LL Bean, Eddie Bauer, Old Navy, REI, Land's End, Gap, and J Crew, but it all ended in sadness and despair. Ask Metafilter, please show me that there is still sunshine in this world.
