Help an ENTP narrow down their career path choices....

In the last couple months I've come to realize that I am not alone. My personality is my problem and it is what has made this post-college thing so hard on me. ENTPs are sort of visionaries who can be the best and innovate and succeed at anything we put our heart to but we get bored very easily if we aren't socially, creatively satisfied and doing some "analysis" or "innovation" or "problem solving". We also don't take well to being "told what to do". (Sort of like a cross between Steve Jobs (visionary, creative, secretly self-obsessed) Calvin (from the comic), Jack Sparrow, The Joker, and Wile E. Coyote. ) [more inside]

"We don't want to waste each other's time"

Companies wanting to get into in-depth salary discussions before they even give you an offer - is this some new trend? I'm used to focusing on my excitement for the position and what it entails during interviews, and dealing with the salary side of things once an offer is in my hand. Having the offer and working with it gives a candidate much more leverage to get into hard negotiations that leave both parties satisfied. [more inside]

How do you learn to set and work on goals as an adult?

How do I help my SO cope with the stress of finding a job?

My girlfriend's finishing grad school, and is beginning her job hunt. How can I best help her cope with the stress? She's smart, capable and graduating from a top 5 school, but she's generally negative and I think her fear of being unemployed is heightened by the fact that she had an unsuccessful job search at the end of her BSc, and by the pressure put on her by her family. Plus, since I've got a job in her desired field, it makes it harder for me to relate to what she's going through. [more inside]

Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker: Tell Me More About Someone's Work

More non-fiction please! As a strange antidote to having to read a lot of dry academic articles, I enjoy pleasurable non-fiction writing about jobs and work. Books I've liked in the past include May Roach (Stiff); Atul Gawande (Complications, Better); Barbara Ehrenreich (Nickeled and Dimed); and Tracy Kidder (House, Among Schoolchildren). I'd like recommendations for more non-fiction along those lines. [more inside]

How do I find a job where I'm useful?

I've found what bothers me about my office job -- my position and what I do is utterly useless. What I do has absolutely no effect on anyone, nor does it increase my employer's profit or success in any measurable way. I've realized this is what leaves me absolutely drained at the end of the work day, though I've spent the day sitting at a desk. It also makes me dread going to work in the morning because I could not feel more like a cog in the machine. What are some jobs where I can actually feel useful or needed, or feel like I'm contributing to society? [more inside]

Career woes : digital project manager vs. software project manager

I'm a digital project manager and have been through a few advertising agencies, each lasting about a year. I'm in my mid 30's and am currently in management running the digital department at an advertising agency. I'm truly looking to get out of advertising and into software, where process is more respected and you actually make products that need to last and serve a purpose. When I go through job postings, my skills don't seem to transfer because it's openly acknowledged that true project management is not practiced in advertising. Anybody have any insight on the possibility of moving over or experience with it?
