Has this life stalled, or stagnated, or does it just need a new hobby?

I'm either going to need a radical overhaul, or just a new activity to keep me going a bit longer. Can't decide which, either because I'm indecisive or out of ideas. I'd like some input on either front: a) should I throw caution to the wind and take charge of my destiny? b) any suggestions for new preoccupations to get absorbed in while this current life persists? Piled embankments of soggy sleet within. [more inside]

burned out lawyer rethinking a new career in teaching

I just left law after 18 years as a sole practitioner. I am burned out. I'm not very money oriented, more into helping people and socializing. I like work that has a beginning and end. I've never been a good employee. I thought that I would like to become a high school social science teacher and I now have a license to teach. I'm a 54 yo female. [more inside]

Tips for assisting w/ a job search for someone who can't do it alone

I've offered to help a relative with a job search because it isn't going well on her own. She is qualified (with a 2 year degree) for the job she wants to find (and is not interested in entry level retail or the sort) but doesn't have the experience or skills to go about finding it. She also may have a diagnosis of Asperger's, and whether or not that's certain, I can at least say that she is stymied by technology (forgets how to do things, forgets logins, avoids it where possible), isn't likely to search out new career listings online much less apply, and gets weary and forgetful of the search easily. I would like some help from AskMe trying to make this is as easy as possible for her while hopefully still teaching her a few tricks. [more inside]

The grass is always greener, but how to get over the fence to see?

A little over a year into a post-PhD, non-academic research job, I am starting to look for greener pastures. There's a company that I've had my eye on who has one a "submit your resume" link but is not actively advertising any positions. How can I best approach them? [more inside]

A rising HS senior is foundering in search of post-high-school options.

My younger brother is an unimpressive student who doesn't show much evidence of being able to apply himself. His grades are B's and C's pretty much across the board in both the sciences and humanities. He wasn't making much progress at sports or with a musical instrument, and after a year or two his motivation fades. I have provided him with learning tools for some technical computery stuff, but that hasn't really been paying off either. He likes drawing and sketching, but not intensely, and the complexity of 3D and animation quickly turned him off. Generally, he likes hanging out with friends, riding bikes, watching TV, and playing video games. But what the hell is he going to be doing a year from now? [more inside]

Is this real life?

About 6 or 7 months ago, I started my first post-academic job in a corporate environment. (I had been an adjunct.) I've now reached the point where the honeymoon's over, and I'm deeply concerned that I'm unlikely to find any satisfaction in work. Am I expecting too much of my working life, or is there something more? [more inside]

How do I help my SO cope with the stress of finding a job?

My girlfriend's finishing grad school, and is beginning her job hunt. How can I best help her cope with the stress? She's smart, capable and graduating from a top 5 school, but she's generally negative and I think her fear of being unemployed is heightened by the fact that she had an unsuccessful job search at the end of her BSc, and by the pressure put on her by her family. Plus, since I've got a job in her desired field, it makes it harder for me to relate to what she's going through. [more inside]

Taking a break from work - help me make it count!

My wife has been feeling a lot of stress at her job for quite some time and is unsure of her overall career choice. She switched jobs about 1.5 years ago to try to reduce stress but her situation has not improved. She is concerned about finding a new job while employed (again) because the positions that she is qualified for would be similar. She is considering leaving her job and taking the time off to explore options and get herself into mental and physical shape. We've gone over our finances together and played out several scenarios that we think will work. Now we're seeking advice on things we may have missed or advice on how to make these months off really count as a time of mental reflection and physical health. [more inside]
