Is a double-major in Spanish and philosophy viable and fruitful?

Is a major in Spanish a good investment? If I buckle down and commit myself to daily study and practice (and spend one semester abroad), can I attain a decent fluency in the language? What kind of career paths could I expect? More details and questions follow. [more inside]

Every 20 years, one comes along...

I remember reading a passage about (I think) the art & science of surgery, in which a professor or older physician remarked that every once in a while, a medical student would come along who was an immediate standout in their class and a natural in surgery. What book/article was this from? Bonus question: what are some other instances of this "trope" in different careers/skills?

Where are the good job sites?

What are the best online sites for job hunting - specifically technical sales and marketing (software sales, hardware, etc). I got blind sided by a layoff on Monday. I've spent the last two days working my network and now it's time to start hitting the job sites. What are the good ones? I haven't had to do this in about 6 years. My initial reaction is that the job sites aren't any better, and maybe are worse, than I remember.

How to start a career as a freelance journalist.

I'm a university student about to graduate with honours in Arts (majoring in English). I've spent the last three years working casually as a mostly unpaid freelance journalist for several rather small online and print publications, and now that my studies have come to a close I'm looking to move into paid work. If there are any mefites who have experience as freelancers and have any advice (or jobs!) for me starting out in this business, I'd really appreciate any input at all. [more inside]

What kinds of jobs are out there?

It occurs to me that, if pressed, I could write out maybe 100-200 jobs/careers, tops. But there must be thousands or tens of thousands. Partly out of curiosity, and partly because I'd love to know what's out there, are there any websites or free resources with a comprehensive listing of jobs and careers, including info like average salary and qualifications required?
