Yet another career advice question from a frustrated software developer

For most of my career I've just floated downstream taking a position that seemed interesting enough, or at least an improvement - and then found myself unhappy when it wasn't a good fit. Readings in relief and development for the college freshman

When I was sixteen, I said I wanted to be a doctor and work in humanitarian relief. A few years on I'm not so sure - but I want to read all about relief and development! How do you learn to set and work on goals as an adult?

How do I figure out what I want to be when I grow up? I've been very lucky in my life so far—just a little bit of work has yielded me amazing opportunities that have more or less fallen into my lap. Do my numerous constraints rule out meaningful work with kids?
