Taking a job away from spouse - looking for success/failure stories

I'm out of work and after a 5+ month job search I have at last received an offer. It's a great company and interesting job - problem is that it's 9+ hr drive (1.5 hr flight) away from my spouse of 9 years in a small town that he will never be able to get a job. My previous job jumping means I need to stay at this job at least 3-4 years. Being apart seems workable to me, but he is strongly against my taking the job. I am looking for success or failure stories of people in similar long distance situations to help make a decision. Also - would you make the same decision again to take the job? [more inside]

Which is easier, changing roles within a company or externally?

A few weeks ago my group was affected in a round of layoffs at a big video game corp and soon will be starting the process of finding a new job. I'm considering two changes to my career but i'm not sure what the best attack plan should be. I'd like to change job roles AND change industries, and I think there may be a best way of doing both but I'd like the hive mind's input. [more inside]

How would I pursue a pseudo-career making music for people who need it?

I’m four and a half months through a six-month (two nights a week, two hours a night) course in electronic music production. Prior to that I did a lot of screwing around in GarageBand, and eventually graduated to screwing around in Ableton. My instructor thinks I should consider doing it for real. But... how? [more inside]

How to Cope with Personal Apocalypse

My personal life is falling apart (I may be on my way to losing my wife and family), but I have to work. What can I do to cope during the work day (where I'm also under a lot of pressure right now, halfway through a high-priority development project sprint under a lot of skeptical outside scrutiny)? I can't quit because that would only hurt my wife and children more (I am my family's sole earner and we have lots of painful structural debt). What can I do to keep my concentration focused on the job at hand and minimize the long term harm to my sanity and career while stuck at work feeling everything I've ever worked for disappearing in the background?

Seeking Career Direction, Want A Job Using Photoshop

I like Photoshop. I like math. I’m a deep guy. I’m not a fine artist. I’m not a photographer. I like writing. I’m deep, smart, and interested in the world, but extremely unfocused and pretty unconfident in myself and my abilities. Happiness, serenity, contentment and fun is more important to me than being rich. I was thinking of starting to learn how to do web design. I came to this conclusion after doing some research into jobs that use Photoshop. Is this a smart move that’s worthy of my time, given my interests? [more inside]

Suggestions for online jobs given ~600 hours to prepare before starting

In six months, I will enter a new living situation in which I will need to make an income of at minimum US$1000/month solely from online work. Before then, I will have generally two, sometimes three hours every weekday and six to eight hours every weekend day to devote to doing whatever preparation might be necessary to be able to do this. In six months, I will have unlimited time to devote to working, but I would hope to work not more than 50 hours a week. I would like suggestions as to what sort of work would fit the bill given a starting point of no skills/connections, and what sort of approach I should take during the preparatory period. Specifically wondering about web design/development, but interested in all suggestions/possibilities. [more inside]
