Should I stay or should I go now? Software engineering career edition!

I'm a software developer, working my first "real job" out of grad school. I'm on a fixed-term contract with my employer. The contract that pays the lion's share of my salary is ending, potentially without a direct transition into a new/connected project. While I wait to hear from management about what this means for me, I'm trying to put myself in the best position to succeed moving forward. This is new to me, please halp! [more inside]

What are other career options for a puzzle-loving aerospace engineer?

I have been an aerospace engineer at a major aerospace company for 15 years, and I'm ready to try something different. Apologetic about success?

What I do in terms of career/projects/desire are all one and the same. And I'm lucky enough to be paid to do what I love, and I continue to do it. It just so happens that lately, within the past year or so, I've been especially "successful". But much of my friends/acquaintances are not really in a similar position, which makes me feel guilty/weird about sharing what's going on in my life. I feel apologetic about my so-called "success", which leads me to under-share about myself. Help? [more inside]

Should I change my job and my country of residence?

I am facing a huge question that I don't know how to navigate and don't feel like I can talk to anyone about. The short story is that I have a precarious-feeling academic job in the Midwestern U.S. and applied for a job in an English-speaking country in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, I found out that I am on the short list for the job. And now I'm just not sure what to do. [more inside]

Performance review - am I being paid less?

My performance review is coming up, and after three years at the company, I'm doing the same job as a co-worker, which wasn't the job I was hired to do. I believe I am fairly compensated, and generally like my job. However as a female person twenty years younger than the male person I am sharing job duties with, I wonder if I should take the opportunity to address salary equity in a performance review or not. We need to talk about where this relationship is going, boss.

I've been at a new position for six months after moving from another state and twelve years in my previous job. I was offered a position that gave me a swell title, more responsibility, and the respect I never got from my previous boss. This new job was fundamentally created for me in that the position hasn't existed at this company in years and years, but my boss was hiring me away from a major competitor, so they re-opened it just for me. Here's the rub: because it's been so long since they had anyone in this position, the responsibilities are definitely...fluid. Like I feel like no one knows what to do with me. Or they are waiting for me to tell them what I will be doing. [more inside]

Really in need of employment and career help

Hello. I am really in need of help and have never been set on any stable career or employment course. What can I do with very few resources (I am down to my last $100 bucks or so; I do not own a cell phone) to get a job ASAP or at least learn more about careers? Are there any lifehacks, tricks, ideas or pathways that I am missing? I know there have to be some people here who have recently had to find new jobs and know the modern job hunt a lot better than the standard advice that's outdated. What did you do when you felt between a rock and a hard place? One thing I was interested in is teaching (either substitute or full-time) but I have no clue how to become certified or where to start. My parents are really losing their patience and I have no clue how long I can be here without contributing pay from a job. [more inside]

How to break big career change to the parents?

I want to get a PhD in clinical psychology and be a therapist (or maybe an MSW or other similar degree). I'm very well informed about this decision and have already learned a great deal about the field through personal study. Here's the catch: I don't know how to explain it to my parents. I scored very well on the LSAT, and my lawyer dad loves the idea of my being a lawyer. Plus, I've become interested in psychology through my personal therapy, which they know nothing about. Any advice on how to break it to them that I want a different career that seems to come out of left field? How do I explain WHY I want to be a therapist? I'm 27, they think I'm settled on becoming a lawyer, and they are entirely unaware that I have any interest in psychology. Help?!

Professional jobs that require night or shift work?

My parents have always worked night shifts as a nurse at a geriatric support centre, and as a mail sorter for the post office. They make enough money. They've made their schedules work for them, and also raised 4 kids while doing so. Because of their shift work, they do get a lot of time off-- maybe working double shifts sometimes, or three 12-hour shifts in a row, but then they get 3 days off. They also tend to know their schedules a month ahead of time. I do not work well in a 9-5 M-F schedule, so I'd like to know what are other similar jobs to this. [more inside]
