Confused about giving up my job that I know (almost) inside out.

Been working at the same not-for-profit for 4 years and I feel that I'm 'in with the bricks', get on with my colleagues and am the 'go to person' in the organisation. However, I've ALWAYS been unsure about the ethics of my boss regarding such things as favouritism, making rules up as she goes along, finance etc. I've now been offered another job as an Executive Assistant for local council - more money, better holidays etc BUT I'm scared. Leaving a dream job for a better quality of life

About a year and a half ago, I was offered an absolute dream job opportunity with a company I obsess over. I feel like the things I am doing have the chance to change the world in at least a small way, and I am well respected and valued in my organization. I have direct access to VIPs that others would love the chance to have a single coffee with. But, it's incredibly stressful at times and has a poor work-life balance. Should I leave this job for an almost-as-cool job that might be better for my family? [more inside]

Got a generous job offer but am having trouble deciding

I'm a recent college grad about to start a master's in computer science. I'm in a very fortunate position in that I've been interning at a national lab in New Mexico this summer and have been offered a fellowship that would cover my tuition, pay me a stipend while in school, and give me a full time job after graduation. But I'm not sure that this is what I want for my career. [more inside]

I Want Less Money and No Power!

I was a software developer for the first 10 years of my career (1998-2008) before going into management. I'm now an executive at a Fortune 500 company with a high-stress job overseeing 250+ engineers layered within four levels of management under me. It's a great job - I'm incredibly lucky to have it - but I need help planning my exit. I want to be a software developer again. [more inside]

Reluctance to stay in academia: is this burnout or a sign?

I'm in the last stretch of my PhD in the UK, with a month left before I submit my thesis. I also have a full-time job as a lecturer. I enjoy and am energised by teaching but am increasingly reluctant to focus on research. Part of this is probably exhaustion from the PhD, and I know I shouldn't make any decisions now, but part of it feels like genuine dislike of the work and skepticism of its value. What do I need to consider, post-submission, in evaluating my future? [more inside]

Technical or Professional certifications a non-IT professional

Are there any technical or professional certificates that a non-IT professional could obtain that would be appealing to future employers? I'm in my mid-30s and all of my work experience has involved non-technical office work. I'm currently a manager (like, actual manager, not an office manager) of one of the branch offices of a small company and oversee a small staff, but I'm looking for a change of scenery. Other than an MBA, are there any certifications (whether professional or technical) that a beginner can obtain that would be attractive to potential employers? If it matters, I currently make in the mid $50s and would like my next job to pay the same or more. I know, I know... Thanks in advance!

Career question: how to transition out of nonprofit track?

I have worked for the federal government for five years (2 on Capitol Hill and 3 in SLC) and also for a well respected local nonprofit here in Salt Lake City, UT for the past two years. I'm Associate Director and things are good. However, unless I become Exec. Director there isn't much upward mobility. Plus, I wrote another question earlier this year about avoiding burnout, which is a problem with nonprofits, long hours, small staffs, etc. What I'm saying is I can't see working in the nonprofit world long term. I don't really see myself transferring to another nonprofit in town either. [more inside]

I can quit my miserable job — but should I?

I started a new job a little over a year ago. After starting I realized the job (and company culture) was not for me, but it is very "prestigious," I liked my coworkers and found it tolerable, at least, so decided to stay. After a series of management shakeups and horrendous treatment of my department, all of my coworkers have left... leaving only me. I can quit, but should I? [more inside]

How to address burnout and work overload when you're the sole employee?

Is it worth leaving one job for another for the same pay?

I'm employed now but have been job-searching for a few months. I've finally found a company that I'd like to work for. The disappointing part is, the final offer they've made is for a lower salary than I'd wanted; after crunching the numbers, I would be earning the same as what I earn at my current job, with no title change. Is it a good idea to move to a new employer for equivalent pay, if the only discernable difference between the two is that the new job seems more interesting? [more inside]

Apologetic about success?

We need to talk about where this relationship is going, boss.

I've been at a new position for six months after moving from another state and twelve years in my previous job. I was offered a position that gave me a swell title, more responsibility, and the respect I never got from my previous boss. This new job was fundamentally created for me in that the position hasn't existed at this company in years and years, but my boss was hiring me away from a major competitor, so they re-opened it just for me. Here's the rub: because it's been so long since they had anyone in this position, the responsibilities are definitely...fluid. Like I feel like no one knows what to do with me. Or they are waiting for me to tell them what I will be doing. [more inside]
